Unfortunately, it is far more innocent than that. In modern American English, "they" can be used as a singular third person pronoun when the gender of something is unknown or unspecified.

And I'm happy to clarify that, as a direct result of my being exclusively heterosexual (not that there's anything wrong with that), my bride is indeed very female.
