I am not certain about salmon fishing, but I can assure you the Scottish fishing industry as a whole is ecstatic about leaving the EU. They were ‘sold down the river’ as a bargaining chip when the UK joined the EU. It is French (and other EU) fishermen who are going to be spitting feathers with the UK leaving the EU.
There is a whole world out there we could trade with.
A few years ago I remember reading Scottish Langoustines were being shipped all the way to Thailand to be shelled and then shipped all the way back here to be sold to the EU and others. I don’t know if they still do that but it just shows we can ship stuff to places other than simply across the English Channel.
This is assuming the EU is stupid enough to try and put tariffs on food, something I am sure they won’t do as we import a lot more food from the EU than we export.
(I wonder though – will the fisheries be used as a bargaining chip on Brexit like it was for us on joining the EU?)
From the Guardian just after the vote:
Scotland's fishing industry welcomes decision to leave the EU
<snip>
Armstrong said Scottish fishermen were strongly against staying in the EU, even though the country as a whole voted strongly for remain. “It must not be forgotten that the whole of the Scottish fishing community, who sustainably harvest seafood from some of the best fishing grounds in the world, does not agree with this stance [on remaining in the EU] in the slightest,” he said.
“For Scotland’s economically important fishing industry, we believe the new opportunities presented by the referendum result are overwhelmingly for the better,” he said.
