Is it me, or is most of the US state flags ugly?

Now that's a heraldically-correct flag! Something like that would have been fantastic on a battlefield - sure couldn't mistake it for anyone else.

That one appears to be missing St. Patrick's saltire.

The US gained independence in 1776, whereas St. Patrick's saltire was added in 1801.

The Texan flag is really underrated.

Flags should be clear, unpretentious and unambiguous, in bold, primary colours, with definitely no writing. Alaska's flag, even if it does include something as basic as the Plough and the North Star, is by far the best posted so far, as it fulfils those requirements.

Best:

Alaska - unique design, and not too difficult to draw
California - I'm generally against words on flags, but this one works despite it. The bear also looks awesome.
Colorado - simple, but it looks good enough
Hawaii - not terribly original, but it's reasonably "flag-like"
New Mexico - simple and elegant, and very distinctive
South Carolina - don't know about you, but I find it very pleasing.
Maryland - overly complicated, perhaps, but it's unique.
Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas - not particularly outstanding, but at least it's not a coat of arms.

Worst:

South Dakota - includes the "state nickname", which is bad even by US standards.
Montana, Kansas, Wisconsin - many state flags have the state names in big letters on them, but these are the worst.
Washington - a portrait for a flag? Come on...

Wow ! I sort of avoided this thread as I figured it wouldn't interest me . But considering how cool the Stars and Stripes is , you guys have some really really lame state flags .

I like Alabama's flag: it's a St. Andrew's cross. The connection with the slavers' flag is unfortunate, but it reminds me more of St. Patrick's flag than the rag flown by the rebellion.

since no one posted my wonderful state's flag, I shall do so. I think our flag is run of the mill. I don't think it's either bad or good. It's kind of bland. It says battle born not because we have seen any wars on our lands, but because we were born out of the civil war.

And California's flag is only cool because of the bear. Let's face it, dangerous animals on flags are cool.

It's too crowded. You don't need your state name on there and even the scroll would be better on a seal than a flag. Vexillology is clearly a lost art across the pond.
