Is it me, or is most of the US state flags ugly?

Most of the state flags suck because they're not simple enough. Too many of them have a seal or some crap on them. Nobody remembers any of that.

Alabama's flag is decent. Alaska's is good. Arizona's is decent. Colorado's is decent. Hawaii's would be decent with less Britishness. Mississippi's and Texas' would be good but are disqualified for treason. New Mexico's is good. Ohio's is all right but loses points for looking like a pennant.

And that's really the whole list of "flags that are worth a damn". The worst is easily Oregon's, which has multiple sides and thus should be ritually burned.

What is your opinion on California's flag? It's a constant reminded to all Californians that "the west shall rise again". :D

State flags should suck. This maintains the unity of the country, for if a state seceded, it would probably become a country, and you can't have a country without a good flag.

Spoiler :
"We stole countries! That's how you build an empire. We stole countries with the cunning use of flags! Just sail halfway around the world, stick a flag in. 'I claim India for Britain.' And they're going, 'You can't claim us. We live here! There's five hundred million of us.' 'Do you have a flag?' 'We don't need a bloody flag, this is our country you bastard!' 'No flag, no country! You can't have one. That's the rules... that... I've just made up! And I'm backing it up with this gun... that was lent from the National Rifle Association.'"

Sorry if this is off topic, but I've often asked people in NZ and Australia if they care that we still have the old colonial flag when other commonwealth countries like Canada don't. This is the current New Zealand flag, and here is a likely alternative which is already the national sporting team flag/emblem, the silver fern.

Which do you prefer? The British union jack and the southern cross stars are very flaggy, but the red, white and blue has been done to death and I kind of like the black and white. Most people I've talked to don't think the silver fern flag is enough like a national flag and should just remain the sporting flag.

I'd take either of them over some of the examples I've seen in this thread - thumbs down for most, but some I like including the Texas flag.

Sucks. No words on the flag. Bear is too complicated.

I agree.
The Confederate States had the best flags of the US at their time, and they failed.
The individual states had asstacular flags. Too many words. Words do not go on flags.
How does the Lone Star Flag have anything to do with the CSA? Did you mean Tennessee's flag?
The Lone Star Flag has to do with Texas' history as an independent state.

EDIT: Derrick that is a seal, not a flag, so yes. Also fairly simple (for a seal), not bad.

The silver fern is too complex. Most people have trouble drawing the Maple Leaf on our flag in Canada, and we dumped our colonial flag because it was just a red flag with a union jack in the corner and a coat of arms off center.

I like the Canadian flag, and the people there definitely seem to take it to heart - you can't walk anywhere without seeing people wearing it! The silver fern is a little complex, not as much as some of the flags with images of people in the US state flags we're seeing, but it's easier to draw than you think. It's just a bunch of skinny black triangles on the basic white shape of the fern.

So, on topic, do the flags in US states other than Texas make up much of the state's collective identity, or are they just sort of there? I think having pictures of men and women on flags is just flat out bad design, to me flags should be more symbolic in nature.

In Minnesota at least, the state flag is just sort of there. We see it outside of public institutions, state functions, and in parades, but I don't recall the last time I saw it anywhere outside of that.

Here. I have made the Virginia flag slightly less pornographic while also making a flag for Arlington.
