Is it possible to change your personality?

Yes but it takes a long time with subtle nudges.

Yes, my personality has changed massively since I repressed my other personality

well, i would prepare as much as possible, try to anticipate any question, etc....i would try to arrive early, so i could see the layout of the place, plan which way i would walk, how to look at the crowd.....in other words, try to have as much CONTROL as i possibly could given the cirsumstance.....once i was "in the role"....i usually had no problems, the structured material was always a little harder for me to get through, but questions and answers came easy, cuz it was more like a one on one, which i have never had any problems with.....in nearly all circumstances, i found myself to be as or more knowlegable and that is when the positive feelings took over....after the presentations, we would continue talking and socialize and i became quite comfortable in those settings as well :)...but it was a gradual process.....if i had presented to the group before, perhaps i was a little more at ease...if it was heavy material, or if perhaps i had to present to collegues whom were once my proffessors, i might be a little more anxious....but there was always a gradual improvement and the more often i did it, the more comfortable i became... one little pearl that was ALWAYS helpful.....the more anxious i felt the more i NEW i had to SLOW down....breath, take a sip of water, slow down your words.....cuz when (at least i) get anxious, it nseems i just try to hurry, hurry, the adrenaline spikes, i start stuttering and it's "mind goes blank" from there

My aunt is a prof in a psychiatry department, and she found out that a LOT of her coworkers learned to deal with those feelings not as you had, but with xanax lol.

For me, I've learned that almost all my best experiences happened amidst the pain of fear. I remind myself of this often. On some level I now associate fear or nervousness with a good time. The actual physiology of anxiety etc. sucks, of course. It's meant to . But my thinking, through experience, has overcome some of the association with that feeling.

If your personality includes learned behavior, than definitely one can change. If personalities couldn't change then animal trainers would be out of work.

I'm glad you're here...and there.

I don't think personalities are at all set in stone.

It's better if the other personality stays far far away from other people. My other personality is a sadist which is very very bad (I might not like kitties, but lighting them on fire is too far).

thinking and experience, basically the "cognitive bahavioral" model in a nutshell :goodjob:

as far as anxiety and fear, it is very intersting that the same neurotransmiters and neural pathways are shared with exercise and thrill seeking (the "monoamines", norepinephrine and dopamine)...with the "positive" experiences however, there seems to be stimulation of endorphins and enkephalins (pleasure and pain killing neuropeptides)....it's still one big messy soup and muticolored wires going every which way.... :crazyeye:

Some people I know tell me that my personality changed after last years concussion. But Im not sure exactly how they mean.

Oh yeah, and theres this ... scary thing where pretty much instantly I can become real scary and a bit malicious. But I dont remember any of it afterwards and Im not even sure its in my control. Its freaky, to be honest, and I call it "the monster."

Is it possible to change your personality?

Very possible, through a variety of different ways.

So can a shy person turn into an outgoing person? Can a negative person turn into a positive thinking person? This is the kind of change I'm talking about specifically. It seems to me your personality is a function of hereditary and environmental factors in childhood and cannot be significantly changed. If anyone knows any research of personality changes (not brought on by drug abuse, insanity, or other chemical/physical changes in the brain), feel free to discuss it. And share any experiences of you or anyone you know undergoing significant personality change. And yes, if anyone is wondering, I am looking to change my personality.

I have successfully and consciously changed my personality a good bit in the past, so the answer is clearly yes. Although I think that the ability to change one's personality may not be an ability everyone has.

To those who believe it is possible to change one's personality, How?

I don't think personalities are at all set in stone.

I don't think that parts of a person personality structure are at all set in stone. One can't change a personality, only the parts. :crazyeye:

Fudge the definition of the word "personality."

Personalities don't change, but the behaviors a person exhibits can. An alcoholic will never be cured of substance dependency, but she can change her behavioral patterns to avoid the stuff. It is also possible for phobias, including social phobia, to be gotten over by graduated exposure, but a person's innate tendency towards introversion or extroversion is set in stone once his personality finishes developing in early adulthood.

Well I've recently become a lot more sociable... and there wasn't exactly any driving reason to be.

Getting hit with a baseball in the forehead can change your personality.. for better or worse.

Actually any kind of head trauma has the potential to mess with your personality. It has happened before.
