Last year the Turkish Aegean Army (which operates without governmental or civilian restrictions; the General Staff governs the needs of the military and is appropriated a budget from the Republic's national account) relocated its military stationed in inner Anatolia out to the coast of the Aegean Sea. Before the Iraq War, Turkey bartered with the US to upgrade Turkish Ports in the Aegean so that they could take a vote in Parliament on whether their NATO bases could be used to stage an attack on Iraq. The vote ended in a NO vote and Greek and Cypriot bases allowed for NATO allies Britain and USA to attack, refuel, and Cyprus (as in Greek Cyprus) was the headquarters for diplomatic operation as well as Qatar as the airforce military headquarters for the invasion of Iraq.
The relocating of the Aegean Army is restricted from the Lausanne Treaty, so long as the Army remains stationed inland, Greece cannot build any military defense or offense within the Aegean and especially Rhodes. The upgrade in ports was later followed by a consentration in military transports for tanks and troops. Turkey has continually violated current legal airspace rules in the Aegean with armed fighter jets, and has never been warned that this illegal action threatens the security of the European Union member Greece. Later it was discovered that Turkey purchased spyplanes from Israel and America and has since flown them over South Cyprus and the Aegean.
In a report in the Turkish Press just days ago, it was announced that the Turkish Military General Staff has allocated funds to build up the Turkish Naval Force with a goal to over power the superior Greek Naval Force in the Aegean by 2015. Keep in mind the comparison is to Naval Forces and not merhcant ships in which Greece is 3rd in the world and Cyprus is 6th, and both are strongly involved with international ship building, transport, engineering, advancement and trade. Obviously, Greeks Naval strength is not threatening to Turkey as Turkey is a landmass. But from these developments that point to a military upgrade, military growth, and military concentration in the Aegean, as Turkey has many Seas to choose from (Mediterranean, Marmara (Pro-Pontus), and Black (Pontus)) am I being paranoid abserving this as a Greek-American?
What do you posters think of this build-up?
and
What do you think might happen? (Will Turkey attack? And who would win? Remember every war Greece has won has been a war where they were outragously outnumbered, except the Greco-Turkish War. Will America and Britain help Turkey like they did in Cyprus or defend Greece?)
