It is so hot society is ending, help!

Well, it’s 40c here in Texas, and I’m still doing 8 hour running shifts delivering packages. 50% humidity too. I’m fully expecting heat injuries.

Me looking at Brits acting like mid 80s is end of the world, while I was chilling last night with windows open and a small fan in the mid 80s.

26C is just about what I keep my thermostat at during the summer (79F). As long as the humidity isn't through the roof, I find it perfectly fine. Although I take all the blankets off the bed in the summer, light sheet only.

Today it's 82 outside (27.5C), so I have the windows open. But I grew up in the Midwest, where we get warm summers. 45C would be miserable, but I'll go outside and be okay with the temperature up to about 86F/30C.

Though I did used to live in a place where we only had AC from mid-May or late-May onward, and sometimes it got warm before then. There, I followed the day/night cycle. Leaving the house during the day? Close the blinds/curtains. Open the windows at night to cool things off. If it's 77F/25C outside at midnight, that only does so much, but it usually got colder than that at night in May. Warm evening and it hasn't cooled off yet? Swap out the chocolate cake dessert plan for ice cream, or a cool beverage. That way, most of the time, it wound up being pretty okay. Wouldn't have been so fun without AC in the Midwest in July, though...

I like the ambient noise from the AC.

I expect I'd get used to it if I put up with it long enough but I have trouble getting to sleep anyway. If I can hear any noise I find myself listening to it and unable to get to sleep.
If noise wakes me up I generally can't get back to sleep either. In London it was when traffic began between 5-6 AM, here its the dawn chorus.

I’m really sensitive to noise too but if it’s a humming noise like that it doesn’t bother me.

Yeah it's warmer here but only by 4 degrees average.

That would make it a warm/hot day it's when you add another 5-7 degrees we'll start complaining and fans sell out.

Hottest I've experienced here was 39 and 37 at 10pm at night. 26 is cold beer time or off to beach/lake/river 30 is a hot day but it's not that hot. We'll have a few days around 30 most summers.

Central Otago usually hits mid 30's a few days.

My wife uses a white noise machine to block out all the other sounds that will wake her up or keep her awake.

People heat bedrooms? That's what blankets are for lol.
Unfortunately it seems they do. During recent energy price increases in Oz I noted interviews with ppl talking about running their heating at night. I grew up with "more blankets". I run with wool quilt, alpaca blanket, wool blanket.

Sawft lol. It can be below 0 here water freezing inside the window.

Another duvet time.

We heat the living room and sometimes computer room that's it.

Yeah, I'm in ACT and grew up with -10c and ice on the inside.

Happen to have a new house now which is nicely energy efficient. Heats itself with sunshine.

Look at this soft little boy with his four walls and a ceiling. I sleep under a rock outcropping totally exposed to the elements, like God intended.

That's January and we bathe in the river and cook on the fire. Yes I'm serious.

Heat waves are relative to local conditions and temperatures that are comfortable in one place can raise mortality in another place due to different building designs, heating and cooling standards and cultural/social factors.

Yep Aussies are more used to heat than here. Very hot here is typical Aussie summer day.

I don't handle humid well dry alpine area cold day is fine, dry hot day in central Otago is generally ok but 39 was to damn hot.

You get a roof when you're dead!

If you lack insulation, blankets are not enough. Though I did discover that a layer of newspaper between the blankets helps to keep body heat in.

At this time last year, I'd had 2 fans running 10 days straight. I'm glad last year was my freebie for electricity (the manager and leasing agent felt guilty about me freezing the previous two winters from lack of insulation and running up a huge electricity bill from the heater). I had the fans running about 6 weeks.

I haven't had to get it out once this year. It's been raining so much that I'm using extra fleece blankets.
