John McCain

It's interesting that people are becoming more and more willing to write slam pieces on prominent figures who die. On one hand I enjoy that it's becoming less kosher to just glorify whatever they did simply because they've died, but on the other hand it seems almost fetishistic how eager some are to get the last word in, to really drive home the point that the person who died is dead and they're plainly enthused that's the case.

It's sort of interesting to me how bare hours after he died people were already making memes not about his death, but about "centrists" or liberals or whatever acting outraged that leftists were making memes about his death.

O tempora! O mores!

Damn dude you sure got me there. Did you know John McCain was a war criminal???

That would suck. I want to live to be old but not so old I'm burying my kids.
Yeah, I wouldn't want my parents surviving me either.

Some of these are pretty funny.

Edit: Actually some of them are rather offensive as well, so maybe not.

John McCain was a typical Republican. He's much better than the alt-right and other fascists claiming to be Republicans. However, he is not like a pre-TEA, pre-birther blue state Republican. Of course, some Republicans in blue states side with the fascists and as such, I cannot in good faith vote for any Republican to national positions (such as Representatives or Senators) until fascism goes out of style again.

I have been looking for these McCain's death memes myself and i find most of them pretty repulsive indeed. Dont know if it is a cultural thing or US society is basically sick but i wouldnt joke even with Hitler brain cancer, that is sooo wrong... :nono::nono::nono:

...said the Spaniard to the Englishman about the work of God knows who about an American.

He did strongly advocate for ongoing war crimes in Cambodia, so it was probably an honest mistake.

That

"claims to be pro life

*dies*"

thing has been making the rounds on the internet for like a decade, btw, people are just putting McCain's face on it because he's the latest famous one to die.

Yeah, must be an American thing.

Unrepentant use of racial slurs deserves condemnation. I will add that I've never been tortured in a POW camp.

I'm not even trying to make him out to be uniquely terrible or exult at his death or whatever, but I think we can express sadness at his passing without acting like he was some kind of saint while he was alive.

I was never a McCain fan. He practiced a patently false humility that grated on my nerves. I honor his military much more than his public service.

Still, it is revealing to see the posthumous praises from those who reviled him 10 years ago.

As someone who campaigned for him ten years ago I will acknowledge he had faults, but taking the political class as a whole he was still very near the head of it.

Indeed. But as you know lionizing the dead is kinda tradition around these parts. Plus while not a saint, he certainly wasn't just some random dude who did some blase stuff and then died.

He killed the ADA repeal over the wishes of his best friend with a senatorial vote from a red state. He preached civility and respect of his opponent as he lost to him. He was an explicit rejection of everything that is worst about Trump. Sometimes the best of rivals is more necessary than the worst of allies.

We'd have done better with a 3rd term in this instance, for one.
