The palace of the Lengelzai was dark, and silent. Foreboding in the still night air of the steppe, the modest palace becoming almost sinster, the shadows dancing against the guards torches. The bronze sword still in the ground outside the palace, a symbol of Lengel culture, and a destination of worshipers of the former and current Lengelzai.
Inside the palace, past the silent dark halls, a single candle burnt within the throne room upon a desk against the wall. A dark figure was hunched over it, merely watching it, his shadow flickering against the wall. The Spymaster was awake, waiting for what, only he knew.
The door opened, and then closed.
A man walked towards the Lengelzai, his steps silent and sure. He walked until his own shadow flickered against the wall, and then he stopped. There was total silence for a moment. Nothing even seemed to breathe. The Lengelzai did not turn around, and said nothing.
The man merely placed a small token in front of the Lengelzai. It was a symbol. A royal insigna burned into the wax. The light flickered, and the symbol became shrouded in darkness. The Lengelzai already knew what it was. He had know years before it had actually happened. He had felt it, deep in his bones, even before he ascended to Lengelzai.
"The small fire flickers and burns, giving light in the darkness," the Lengelzai said, as if speaking only to himself. The man stayed silent.
"It is such a small thing. It gives so mcuh light, yet is so easily extinguished. Insignificant against greater light, greater fire," he said, breathing out lightly, making the flame flicker. The man reached for the flame, reaching to extingish it, but the Lengelzai stopped him.
"Not yet, not yet my friend. Wait. I have not made my decision yet. And neither have they, I think. The light does not need to be extinguished just yet."
"But the opportunity presents itself, either way," the man spokle finally, his voice gravelly, as he motioned to the still unseen insigna. The Lengelzai nodded, taking the symbol in his hand, examining it.
"Yet the question remains. Should I?"
There was no answer. Only silence. Then, the flame was gone, extinguished by the symbol in the Lengelzai's hand.
"Then the world will burn."
