London calling [Student tuition fees and the protests]

Oh and here's a picture of some school girls protecting a police van from further vandalism.

freaking hippies.

Why would you leave the van??? Surely you'd drive off, you know, in the van. Where it's safe. Rather than strolling out into the crowd that you are apparently afraid of. Those policemen must have been pretty god damn stupid to leave the van like that.

standard procedure to provoke clashes. dont tell me you're surprised.

I think this is a better example of people trying to keep the protests peaceful, rather than that nauseating Guardian-staged photo.

And to add to my last question, would I be able to arrest a violent protester who is committing criminal damage if the police were doing nothing to stop him?

The coalition government has won the vote to raise tuition fees in England to up to £9,000 per year - amid violent protests in Westminster.

Three ministerial aides have resigned over the issue - as the fee rise passed by a majority of 21 votes.

Scotland Yard says eight police officers have been hurt in clashes between police and students.

In angry scenes, protesters are battling with police and attacking buildings, including the Treasury.

Earlier protesters had forced their way into Parliament Square and pressed against lines of riot police in front of the Houses of Parliament.

You English are awesome. I especially love the cavalry charges. The only thing missing were the 7 foot lances and chain mail.

Good... I was there at the protest and it was great.

"please senators, congressment please heed the call, don't stand in the door way don't block up the hall"

There will be more anger at the tory goverment for many years now.

If I was there I would of thrown so much paint at his car. I've always hated royalty, damn I wish I was English now.

I don't advocate civil violence in the slightest and cheering for it just makes you seem cheap. Resorting to the lowest common denominator simply tells other people that you can't be trusted to act decently.

Counter-point: it was Prince Charles, ergo, violence is funny.

:mischief:

Why is it that Europe has more interesting protests then America does?
Still, I oppose the violence. The protesters have to show that they are better then the police and tories.

I can't help but think that the violence is entirely counterproductive, but most likely isn't the work of authentic protesters anyway, but the work of people who've turned up just to smash things.

I hear there have been occupations at some universities, as well.

Nah, if violence was wrong the Tories wouldn't have supported the Iraq war.

Violence is still wrong, Traitorfish, even if you're a republican. :D
