Another soul aspires to enlightenment. Maybe one of these years we'll all care about issues in the light of people, love, and greater humanitarian interest rather than in the shadow of modern forms of petty tribalism. :mischief:
You mean exactly the sort of person which Margaret Thatcher didn't epitomize. :mischief:

I don't know why people are celebrating the fact that she's dead. I understand that if you have lost your job as a result of her ideology or as a direct result of decisions she took to e.g. close pits then you might wish ill upon her I suppose. If my boss fired me I'd be pretty angry too. I don't think I understand why people are happy that she is dead. I don't think she ever killed anyone.

@Cutlass: It's more the irony of giving a state funeral to someone who loathed the state with passion and dedicated her life to dismantling it.

Aka, we should follow your form of petty tribalism. Gotcha.

As far as I know she had that she didn't want a state funeral in her will.

"You don't tell deliberate lies, but sometimes you have to be evasive." Margaret Thatcher

Well, what's wrong with it? People do not like to hear truth, so you have to adapt if you are politician.

"I owe nothing to Women's Lib." Margaret Thatcher
"The battle for women's rights has been largely won." Margaret Thatcher
She was correct at the time, so nothing wrong here as well.

"No woman in my time will be prime minister or chancellor or foreign secretary - not the top jobs. Anyway, I wouldn't want to be prime minister; you have to give yourself 100 percent." Margaret Thatcher
It seems you think something wrong is here but I fail to grasp. It is obvious such bright women like Margaret Thatcher are rarity so it is understandable she made such prediction.

I don't think she ever killed anyone.

Between the results of her Northern Ireland policy and the Falklands war, there's plenty of dead people to go around.

Apparently some people don't want a state funeral. Though I suppose one will happen.

Apparently, by permission of the Queen, she will have a ceremonial funeral, with a military salute, but it won't be a full state funeral.

Aka, we should follow your form of petty tribalism. Gotcha.

Sure! Now which tribe am I part of so that I know where to point the sharp end?

I appear to have inherited a dislike of her because I live in the north east, but I have on occasion also heard what a dump the country was before she took over.
Still seems a bit silly to blame her for things that are happening now, that's really the fault of PMs that came after for accomplishing nothing.

Still Rest in Peace.

I used to call myself a leftist, but now that I have read this thread, I don't think I want to be associated with that gang anymore. Especially when you compare how fine gentlemen these two guys were in the Chavez-thread:

Why associate yourself with any gang? Just be human.

I assume a lot more people died on the streets at the time and since as a result of her policies.
Right, yeah, a lot of people suffered needlessly because of some of her policies. I don't know if the sum of all that suffering, multiplied by the % of that suffering that can be attributable to Thatcher personally due to the chain of causality splitting, adds up to 1 death.

Were they about politics?
They were about a woman's proper role in society. About how "women's lib" had nothing at all to do with her own supposed political success. About how "the battle for women's rights has been largely won" even decades ago.

Margaret Thatcher was the same sort of role model for women as Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann now are.

You can probably find the video clip where an ordinary housewife visibly flusters Thatcher on air when she keeps on pressing the PM as to why she gave the order for the Belgrano to be sank. It's probably unique in that respect.

Let me add another two good quotes:

"The feminists hate me, don’t they? And I don’t blame them. For I hate feminism. It is poison."

"The battle for women's rights has largely been won. The days when they were demanded and discussed in strident tones should be gone forever. I hate those strident tones we hear from some Women's Libbers."
