MilarNES II: Civilizations of the World

romania_rel96.jpg

As you can see, Tulcea and Constanta are in very large letters on the right side of the map.

Should be at that delta-looking part in the very northeastern most part of the European/Mediterranean cradle.

OK, all those that have put up their nation's template are in the map. I'll start writing up Update 0 soon. I'm going to wait till tomorrow morning local time to post it, though, because there might be someone else wishing to join as well. The NPCs won't be appearing in the Update, though.

A new world is born. People in it gather in small communities to better defend themselves from wild animals, or maybe other humans that aren't very keen on helping their fellow humans. Some of them, bound with a culture that is common to many in those communities, decide to expand their holdings so that more people join them. In many of those communities, one person manages to take absolute control of every aspect of their communities as they expand into what could be said to be a nation. In others, one person manages to get limited control over the other people in the nation. A few create a government in which each of the different tribes that compose the community has an independent council, and others place all leading power in the hands of those that claim to communicate with their gods.

But this is not the only change. Most of these new nations have created a special group of soldiers that has trained beyond a person's normal training, giving them an edge in a possible battle against barbarians and perhaps other nations that attack them. In many of them, culture is solidifying, creating a tighter nation where people will help each other with ease. Sometimes it is due to the circumstances in which the people live, in others what they have in common is the religion they follow, and in a few cases it's only the fear of others that does the trick.

However this may happen, the cultures and nations have been born. Barbarians that reject the ways of advancement have sprouted in all the world. Soldiers prepare their weapons, and sages prepare to go with new ideas that will advance the economy of their countries. All is prepared for the conflict between the...

CIVILIZATIONS OF THE WORLD

Africa

The only true civilization in the zone is the nation of Eskimogypt. Living in the shores and the Delta of the Nile River and led by an all-powerful monarch, they have instead turned to animal breeding in order to provide them with food and perhaps some help in the future. This breeding has allowed them to carry forward their plans for the perfect battle unit: the Terror Camel, an armoured camel that has been trained to like the taste of human flesh – although they can't still eat it since camels are vegetarians – and can carry a rider on their back. However, the ability to create armours for the camels has yet to be known to the Eskimogyptian people, and thus they only have the idea but not the military unit on itself.

Asia

Many more nations have appeared in the great continent of Asia. Amongst them is the Empire of Hestath, led by the priests of Ancestor Worship. As Eskimogypt has done, they have turned to animals to provide them with foodstuffs and perhaps some other help. Their best unit, the Flying Warriors, are a set of crazy warriors that actually prefer to fight against superior numbers, as, for some reason, this boosts their morale at great levels, but they don't like to fight against inferior numbers, to the point that they will not fight if that happens.

Further to the east, the Feicui Empire looks forward to their future greatness days. Their homeland in the island of Hainan has driven them to the sea in order to obtain the food they need, complementing what they gather from Mother Nature. They worship jade and the sacred forest of the island of Hainan, as the first represents the Feicui and is what the god Yu is made of; and the second is said to be full animal and forest spirits, the Qiong, which they also worship. The Yuoni, the sacred soldiers of Yu, are always ready to take on the Feicui enemies, while the Shan ships can easily surround and sink or take an enemy ship thanks to their swiftness in battle.

In the Indian subcontinent, a nation that depends on the products of the earth that they sow called Khambat has been born. Living in the Gulf of the same name, they aspire to become the lords of the world, aided without doubt by their Monarch and the priests of the Khambian religion. There isn't anything truly known about possible specialized military units, but it is hoped that they will appear soon.

Near the Empire of Hestath, the Tribal Confederacy of the Mitanni people survives. Their ancestral knowledge of horse-breeding has brought them to the new times with a special military unit, the Tribal Horsemen, which are armed with the same weaponry that the Warriors have, and while they are weaker than the normal Riders, they compensate this with their swiftness in battle, that allows them to avoid the long distance attacks they are weak to and to strike hard at their enemies as they reach their positions.

Finally, further to the east than the Feicui Empire, the theocratic government of the Yazidi Order has been established. Believing that their un-named God sacrificed himself to create the universe and all life, it wasn't until several years ago that the man named Yazid discovered the divinity within himself and strived to teach the others about how to achieve the same. Now, this nation, with their thirst to wake the goodness of all the human hearts, lead by the monks of the Order and protected by the Yazidiori – the warrior-monks of the nation – and the Turtle Ships that travel through the seas, is starting to thrive from their capital in the Korean Peninsula.

Europe

The City-State of Marsi, from the southern coast of the region of Gaul, have started with a good foot. Using the shores of the river near which Marsi stands to provide food to the people, they hope that their future is bright and full of success. Their Monarch leads all of the Marsian people, which adore a triad of gods that protect each of the branches of the economy that is fundamental to them. Their War Bands, trained to be able to use all kinds of weapons with ease, are starting to be deployed in order to expand the control of the City-State over the surrounding lands.

In the Iberian Peninsula, the nomadic people of the Nation of Aruhn have finally settled down in the southern coast, near the Strait of Aruhn, which in the future will become an strategic point as it is the only exit point from the Mediterranean Sea. Their god Ytri is said to have given them the powerful and robust Sveloni horses, which are ridden by the Nossair horsemen, which are considered to be something similar to a priest by the population.

Finally, very far in the east, in the end of the Great Mother River, live the people of Sessentia. They make the most out of the river's waters to cultivate grain and other things that will later be consumed by the people as they need to eat. Their best units, the Sessentian Whisperers are, for some reason, taken from the lower echelons of society, mainly those people that have been forced to turn to crime in order to survive and that are then trained so that they can use their abilities to defeat the enemies of the nation, particularly those that don't follow Lathanism.

North America

Many nations have appeared in North America, the most unknown of all continents, as it is isolated from the rest of the world by two wide oceans that won't be passable in the next few years.

In the mouth of the Mississippi River, the Kingdom of Utul has taken to catch fishes from the waters in order to present their people with enough food for all of them. They don't seem to have any perceptible religion, but it is sure a matter of time before said religion appears.

Further to the south, in the Yucatan Peninsula, the Maya civilization has appeared. They are perhaps the most unusual nation in the whole world, as they have preferred to concentrate in their religion of Mayan Polytheism instead of trying to find ways to give their people more foodstuffs or resources to work with. Starting in Mayapan, the people of this nation are very much intent in going forward with their plans for world domination.

Near the Kingdom of Utul, the monarchic Nation of Prisma has appeared. According to the Prisman mythology, humanity was created when other-worldly beings fertilized the ground with the seeds of humanity, but the Prisman people are instead the result of the sexual encounters between the primitive humans and the powerful beings. They tend to put the greater good of the community over individual morality, but there is a group that rules behind the curtains called the Bilders that have been doing the opposite to it ever since they were organised. Their elite force, the Neflim, have been trained to be able to kill any enemy of the Prisman nation with stealth and swiftness.

Finally, in a position between the Kingdom of Utul and the Maya nation, stand the Tototl, which is composed of several tribes that have joined in a nation in which society is based on a caste system in which each caste is defined by what each person does. They don't follow a religion per se, but they follow a way of living that is defined in their mythology. Their elite warriors, the Yaxtlon, are known for their strong resolve and their unwillingness to surrender unless it could be catastrophic, while their first ships, the Yaxtlan, can be used to raid coastal towns in the dead of the night thanks to their ability to move silently through water.

@Everyone: have a look at your stats and your position in the map. If you have any problem with them, please tell me soon.

Also, sorry for the quality and the lateness of the Update, it is really hot here in Granada and it makes me asleep, so it isn't easy to stay awake and create a masterpiece. Anyway, I hope that you have liked it.

I don't know when the orders should be in, because I am still waiting for Vertinari118 to send me the stats of the NPCs, which he had volunteered to create and lead. If any of you can get him to do it faster, then I'd be grateful.

You can start posting your stories now if you want.

The Holy Arcadian Empire/Nuclear Kid
Pendragon (OTL JAPAN?!?!?)
Starting Government: Monarchy
Starting Tech: Agriculture
Religion Name: Christianity (Serious the exact same thing)
Your first unit: Warrior
Your nation's culture: The Arcadian people see themselves as a naturally superior nation. Men are likely to join the military and take part in the Arcadian Empire. The Royal Family controls most of the power within the nation. The Emperor has several wives, around twelve, who each carry the title of Empress. The children are given their title according to the order of the Empress (ex: a child of the second Empress would be the Second Prince or Princess, the Eighth Empress's child would be the Eighth Prince or Princess). The order has actual little importance, as succession is usually decided on who is best suited, male or female can rule. To test his children, the Emperor puts them in command of bureaucracy, territories Arcadia has conquered, or in command of troops. There have been cases before where a prince or princess has ordered the execution of their siblings in order to secure the crown. Below the Royal Family are the nobles, and below that the middle class. Finally, the slaves at the bottom, those who live only to serve Arcadia.

Spoiler :
It was a dozen hours before the village's two fiercest warriors were to duel for the right to succeed the recently deceased Joans, or leader, of the village of Torm. At dawn, the two would meet in the fields a half-mile from the village and alone, they would do battle to the death. The villagers were restless with anticipation as the Joans that now lay on his funeral pyre had ruled the tribe for nearly two generations. He was all any of them had ever known. Now, either Jerge or Icke would return from the fields in the morning as the new ruler. The new Joans.

Doiel, An elder of the tribe whose exact age even he was unsure, walked slowly with the aid of a long stick towards a small cooking fire burning near the crude hut that was home to Icke and his wives. Icke was sitting on a stump by the fire, tending to the final moments of cooking a plump rabbit on a spit. He immediately rose and offered Doiel the seat on the stump, which Doiel politely declined.

"I won't trouble you for long, Icke. I don't need a seat", Doiel started. "Quite an important day for you tomorrow, eh young warrior?"

Icke couldn't suppress the smirk that escaped the corner of his lips. "You trained me well these past months, elder. I will be the Joans tomorrow and our people will see success like never before."

The smirk vanished and Icke continued in a more serious tone, "Jerge is a most deadly fighter and he would truly make a fine Joans. We grew up hunting and fishing together, you know. He is a decent man, but without the benefit of your wisdom and guidance, Doiel, he stands no chance tomorrow."

The old man smiled at this, exposing toothless gums, but said nothing.

After taking the rabbit off the fire and setting it aside, Icke continued, "I have been taught all my life that only the bravest, fiercest, strongest man may continue the path of our Joans. I've known in my heart for a long time that I would lead our people. That the Joans died now is surely destiny.

"I only regret that Jerge is challenging my rightful place. I cannot begrudge him his desire for power, but he could be in my Council or lead some of our warriors. He doesn't have to fight."

Icke sighed. "I will miss him."

Doiel cleared his throat. "Know that as I watched you grow up in this village and become strong, I saw that you alone, of all our young men, could be a great Joans. That is why I have spent so much time in your home since the harvest, honing your mind so you could better hone your body.

"Just remember the wisdom I've passed to you and sharpen the blade I gave you one last time tonight. With these, you cannot fail."

"I am in your debt, elder, and your loyalty to me will be repaid tenfold after I return as Joans. I hope you will show me the ropes and advise me as leader."

"I will do whatever a feeble old man can do.", Doiel grunted in his aged voice.

"Never forget that there is nothing greater in the world than putting your neck on the line, fighting to the death for the right to lead Prismans. Make me proud."

With that, Doiel, the elder of the village of Torm, flashed a quick half-smile, turned and walked towards his own hut.

2.
Spoiler :
Instead of retiring for the night, Doiel walked past his hut and continued a slow pace for several hundred yards beyond it. As he approached the last of a grouping of small huts, the young would-be leader, Jerge, stepped into the doorway to greet him.

"Doiel! You normally visit in the morning, my friend. What are you doing walking this late?", the fighter asked. He stood shirtless with only an animal skin covering his nethers and a shiny long knife hanging from a leather strap around his thigh.

"You have grown quite strong since you married.", the elder said, poking the end of his walking stick into Jerge's abdomen. "Almost like you've been doing physical labor inside your home as well as out."

Jerge's eyes flashed as he realized Doiel's innuendo and a sly grin crept across his face. "I really didn't think that the Joans would leave us until I was too old to take his place. If I had dreamt I would be doing death with Icke tomorrow, I would have trained harder."

Doiel raised his eyebrows.

"No, no, you old devil. I would have trained with my weapon harder." Jerge's grin widened.

The old man poked at the warrior's stomach one last time, and surprisingly hard, before he spoke, "You listen to me. You will be our next Joans and you deserve to be. Icke will be a tough opponent, to be sure, but you remember all that I taught you since the last harvest and you will defeat him. His foolish pride will be your weapon. Well, that and the special blade I gave you."

"And such a fine blade it is, mentor. I know you know this but I have to tell you again how much I appreciate that gift. I know it is a finer blade than Icke has. He's as poor as I am!"

Jerge looked down at the gleaming knife. "It will really be an edge for me in the battle, so to speak." He smiled at his own wordplay and unconsciously stroked the killing instrument on his hip that he had spent all evening sharpening.

"The fact that you chose me and not Icke to enlighten with your words and that you have faith in me gives me the strength I need to be victorious tomorrow. When I come back from the fields tomorrow, my first act will be to appoint you as my advisor. I hope that you will accept and continue to share your wisdom with me."

Doiel took a deep, tired breath and let it out slowly. "I've had my eye on you for some time, young Jerge. You will make a wise and productive Joans. Just remember that while he may be a little bigger than you are, Icke tends to leave his weak side too exposed when he attacks."

Jerge's face suddenly became serious. "I will fight tomorrow for our people and our way of life and I will win. I will win for Torm and I will win for Prisma!"

Doiel finished, "Never forget that there is nothing greater in the world that to risk death and fight for the right to rule our people. Make me proud."

After watching him creep home, Jerge stood leaning in his doorway for several moments, staring at nothing in particular.

3.
Spoiler :
Doiel the elder awoke the next morning when the sunlight coming through the hole in his wall that served as a window made it's way to his eyelids. He lay in his bed with his eyes open for what felt like an hour before he heard the noise for which he had been waiting.

It started with someone shouting from down the road, "I think I see someone!", followed by, "Who is it?" and, "Who is our Joans?"

A moment later, what sounded like the entire village erupting at once in joyous shouts, hoots and hollers meant that the battle was truly over. The new Joans had crawled, stumbled or walked from the fields where the battle took place and had made it to town and the awaiting townsfolk.

Doiel yawned and smiled his toothless smile. He thought greedily of the new power he would now hold over the new Joans. He blessed the naivete and ignorance of youth. Visions of wealth and admiration flashed through his mind and he thought, "Never forget that there is nothing greater in the world than a sure thing."

The Noh Ajaw (Great Leader) gazed out upon his land. To the north and the west was the Taabhaa, the water which connected Maya with the rest of the world...should they ever figure out a way to traverse it. To the south was the flat stretch of trees and plains, ultimately leading to the puuk, the hilly region at the land's southernmost point. To the east, were the vacant lands, which appeared to be identical to the land occupied by the Maya.

Noh Ajaw sighed. The land was beautiful and bountiful, and he was proud to call it home. The religious people of Maya, however, faced a mounting problem...the lack of a constant source of food. The Mayans were foragers, feasting on the gifts the earth bore naturally, like grasses such as ishim (maize), fruits such as berries and squash, and much more. But, the fact that the people could not control its growth meant that some days people went hungry. Noh Ajaw strode into one of the several shrines in Mayapan, and made a plea to the gods. He pulled a small knife, and cut his earlobes, his tongue, and his ton, the "appendage" between his legs, as was the appropriate action for making requests to the gods. Now he could only wait until the gods decided on what to tell them.

Stories:

The First Prestine Controversy
OOC: Inspired by Milarqui claiming Ancestor Worship somehow had priests. The idea is interesting enough to be tolerated, but given what the Ancestor Worship was based on it doesn't actually make sense...

Introduction:
After the Geekren Wars, the prestige of the Imperial family was greatly diminished- the Emperor actually abdicated in order to avoid deposal, and it was not his son but a distant relative who took his place. Metaphorically, the Empire quaked in it's boots- now was the first time in history in which a coalition of the surrounding barbarians would probably destroy them.

Even a generation later, the effects were felt- the Emperor Gekren, heir to a title once proclaimed by all absolute, desired to introduce Priests as a reform to reduce the prestige of the Family Heads. This would once have been grudgingly tolerated, but now it meant war.

1- An Explanation of the Issue:
Traditionally, Imperial ancestor worship had no priests, unless the Heads of Families could be called that. The Head of the Family was the only person allowed to pray to an ancestor directly, and anybody else doing so faced the death penalty (this was difficult to enforce, but strong social taboos helped). No intermediary was needed between him and his ancestors, and there were no other Gods.

The elite Heads of Families were in practice one of the major powers of Hestath. The Heads of Families together were an aristocracy- whatever they might have said about their own loyalties, they could reduce an Emperor to their puppet by force if necessary. It was they, not the Emperor, who could raise soldiers to war, and whilst they had no legal, religious, or moral argument for it, in private they considered him a mere first amongst equals.

Emperor Gekren's only advantage was that he considered even by them head of the country, and the inconsistencies resulting if they rebelled meant he could command some support. As a result, he based his strategy around reducing the support the Family Heads had amongst the common people- to do this would destroy, hopefully, their power.

If, hypothetically, he could have his own people pray to the Ancestors, it would be they, not the Heads, who were turned to for help in times of trouble. This would create a competitor for the people's loyalties, and thus push the balance of power in his favor.

2- The Prestine War:
Gekren's strategy depended on a very lucky opportunity- some of his retainers had found an unusual case of two couples above the age of 100 having given birth to a child, who despite his origins had actually survived. This skipping of several generations meant that he was, in a religious sense, equal to an adult, and thus one to be worshipped by his own peers.

As a response to this development, Gekren proclaimed that from the time he was old enough the child, named High because of his new status, would become intermediary to the Gods for the Imperial Family. A generation after their own, his own descendants would become intermediaries to the Gods for the upper aristocracy, and eventually to every family.

The Heads of Families saw this threat coming, and decided to take the unprecedented step of threatening war. This action, analagous to a mugging in it's lack of legal basis, was a gambit but one they were willing to take. All Hestath was shocked, and looked on to see the result.

At first, there was not much of one. Gekren, daring the aristocracy to rebel, simply implemented the degree and waited to see what would happen. A few of the more loyal commoners were drafted as "Flying Warriors" (functionally they were not, but the legal fiction was seen as useful) and the bodyguard reinforced, but no attempt was to made to punish anybody for the blatant act of rebellion.

This was unwise. As he should have expected, the Heads of Families raised up the commoners to make war on their Emperor. A few rare cases occured where people were executed for refusal, but most were socially pressured into joining the war. This was soon rationalised away- the Heads came up with a pretext by having Laarus's direct male descendant claim the original abdication was under duress, and demand his rightful throne back.

The war then would end quickly at the Battle of Hestath. Gekren, outnumbered greatly, decided to go down in a blaze of glory and focus on smuggling out as many members of his own Imperial Family as he could. Strategists would later debate if he could have actually won the battle, but the point was moot- he lost, and died.

I don't know if you read the "Next Orders Due... II" thread. Just in case, this message is so that you know that, tentatively, the orders for Update 1 are to be sent before next 10th July at 6 PM WEST (12 PM EST).

About that... How do orders in an NES work? I've never actually played one before.

Essentially you tell Milarqui how you want your nation to progress.

How and where it will spend its economy (On virtually anything you like!)

How and if your Army will do any expansion etc

Once i've written orders I'll possible post them up for you to see an example... tonight i think

My orders sent, are they suitable?
