New Xbox basically kills off used games

Of course you can resell a "download". You can resell any "digital content" you buy through some contract.

Or perhaps in some american contries where corporations could by rewriteen in the last few years you no longer can?
Wouldn't reselling a download be sort of like reselling a hot dog that you already ate?

No, you can't.

If you get DRM-free stuff, the concept is even more ridiculous. Want to buy some used game installers I got from GoG?

I'll just burn them onto some discs and mail them to you after you paypal me the money.

Well the Zune was a rather excellent product, lots of non-Apple mp3 players were/are excellent, and they're all sales failures because they're not Apple.

Edit: Also regarding the price being $100 above the PS4, the XB1 is pretty severely restricted by market at launch, so I suspect supply will be a limiting factor rather than demand, even at the $500 price. The PS4 is marginally easier to produce, but if it's also supply constrained and spends months going for $600 on ebay, the $400 price won't do much other than eat a bit into Sony's profits.

And games that are twice the price with no frequent, deep discounts a la Steam sales, and you'll get banned from Xbox Live if you try to install mods.

Because why? The XB1 is basically as close to PC gaming as you can get, except with marginally worse graphics and no torrenting games.

And no modding games either, I would imagine. Let's not get carried away here.

And that's why you always play on the PC, kiddies!
Because always on DRM and your gaming being dependent on the company servers is better than once a day check-ins? Im not fan of microsoft's nonsense here but its fairly mild compared to the horror show some of PC gaming is.

Yeah, the DRM encumberment is similar, but it comes with huge benefits on the PC that don't exist on the XB1. I've said before, I don't mind DRM, as long as it provides some sort of benefit to me, the consumer. If you just add a whole bunch of restrictions that didn't exist before, thus making my experience unambiguously worse, then why would I ever think that DRM was a good thing? OTOH, companies like Steam, Netflix, etc take DRM and packages it up into an overall much more compelling product. The fastest growing companies recognise this and are selling DRM as part of a larger package that, overall, is a better product than what came before. The dinosaurs are simply adding DRM to existing products, simultaneously making those products worse and more expensive. The question is, is Microsoft a dinosaur about to go extinct, or will it evolve into something that resembles Steam for the living room?

I think it's perfectly reasonable to say that... I mean, if you don't have internet, then you're going to be left behind by new technology. A state of the art gaming console is about as modern a technology as you can possibly get.

Well, since the XB1 is not backwards-compatible, presumably that means they are expecting publishers to shift to their new console for which to produce games, so their public response to people who don't have reliable daily/hourly internet for whatever reason is "buy our old console for which games are unlikely to still be made"? Shouldn't they have public relations people for this sort of situation?

Err, yeah, just like with every other console in the history of consoles.

I really don't know what you expect them to say. The XB1 requires an internet access. If you don't have the internet, you can't use it. The Xbox 360 doesn't require internet access. If you don't have internet access, then the Xbox 360 is better for you. All of those things are completely factual. What exactly do you want them to say here?

They've just released a new 360 model, so they clearly plan to support it for a little while longer yet.

The PS3 is backwards-compatible and no other console to my knowledge requires an internet connection. The 360 was also able to go onto XBL and download code to make certain original Xbox games playable on the 360. I can't see how your first line is at all relevant.

You don't sell things by being curt, dismissive or even honest. That's why you have marketing and public relations teams. This is rapidly turning into a public relations disaster and all he can say is, "buy our old console"?

One would hope so, yes.

I'm not talking about backwards compatibility, I'm talking about "buy our old console for which games are unlikely to still be made". Every console has a lifespan, every technology goes obsolete one day. If you don't have the prerequisites for the new generation of console, then don't buy it. Stick with the 360 or get a PS4. No other consoles require an internet connection, so if you don't have the internet then use one of those other consoles........ It's really quite simple.

Again, what the hell do you want them to say???? What exactly would satisfy you at this point? The XB1 requires an internet connection, so don't buy it if you don't have the internet. How much more simple can it get? You want the PR guy to call you darling and sing you a song while he strokes your hair? Would that make it all better?

That actually might be a fairly compelling sales pitch.
