Obama to call for repeal of DADT in State of the Union

States are not people. No one owes the State of Montana or the State of Rhode Island AND bloody Providence Plantations anything.
I owe the Commonwealth of Virginia 4% of the price of everything I buy here, dunno about you

Objections to DADT.

I mean just don't act gay. People have been doing it for thusands of years in the army.

Why should they have to? A number of other nations allow gays to serve openly, and have no problems with it. DADT isn't universally enforced, and when it's known a person is gay, it doesn't cause a problem.

The argument is that the majority of the people who volunteer for US military service are too mindlessly bigoted to accept openly gay comrades. Well screw them. The same argument was made against blacks. They got over it. Anyone that bigoted we are better off without in the first place.

Why should people be allowed to act straight but not gay?

Terrible argument.

I don't know what acting straight is but everybody know what acting gay is like even if it is a stereotype. Just don't act gay.

Also I'm not against gays in military but rather than turning the army into a whose gay and whose not-gay segregationa and all the problems people have with everybody knowing each others sexuality why don't we assume its ww2 and nobody is gay :mischief:

Laughable. Protecting the minority from the majority is an EXTREMELY democratic idea.

You truly don't understand how American democracy was conceived. Well, that might not be fair. Maybe you just disagree w/ the intent of the framing of the federal govt. in the Constitution.

It was a compromise.

But why should Wyoming (544,270) get the same amount as representation as California (36,961,664)? California has more of the population, and thus should have more representation. That is a true democracy.

If that is the argument in favor of DADT than it is a poor argument. I don't think bigots should be appeases either - but DADT is working right and its practical so keep it.

Not sure what you mean by "acting gay". Could you define what that is for us please?

Have you been locked in a box your whole life? Check out TV and see the average gay.

lol, I'll remember this the next time you try to defend the idea of protecting the minority from the majority.

Nothing. It doesn't make sense to have places that remote as part of your national government. Cut them loose.

I notice you didn't comment on my HofR reply. I'll take that as an admission that you're wrong. ;)

Because I'm tired of Nebraska stopping what the rest of the country wants I hate minority rights. Totally.

I see no reason why if they choose to become states by voting on it we should not admit them.

The number of representatives we have now is proably sufficent for our purposes.

Empty gesture. As I've said before in the past, if Congress/Obama really wanted DA;DT to be repealed, it would have been repealed last year.

...And I swear Karalysia has to be a closet homosexual, 'cuz (s)he's always starting threads on gays.

Because I care about the greatest and most pressing civil rights issue of our time I must be one of those faggosexuals. Totally.

Because the House is based on pop and in that house CA has 50+ seats, while Wyoming has 1.

The design is that the House is the one that is responsive to the notion of the will of the people. Hence, the short terms and direct election (Senators serve 6 and were not directly elected till ~1913).

The Senate is supposed to be the more reflective, cautious body that is more insulated from public whim.

The problem is not the design of the House/Senate. Its that corporations have more rights and access than citizens and the whole thing is a mess.

If you look at the original design of the federal govt. 5/6 of it was put beyond the reach of the will of the people/majority rule.

Because I'm tired of Nebraska stopping what the rest of the country wants I hate minority rights. Totally.
Ok, then, while you may not like the outcome, you surely cannot argue that Prop 8 should be overturned. It was, after all, the will of the majority and was voted on in as direct a way as possible.

That was against. And it's not working. The military is spending years and in some cases millions of dollars training people, and then kicking them out of the service when they need them most.

Yes thats why I said abolish the Senate not abolish the Courts.

No, you said you hate minority rights, "totally". That doesn't leave a lot of room for quibbling.

In reality, you just don't like the Senate because for expediency sake it thwarts your political desire. That same thwarting will protect you in other cases. Your arguments, in light of your other views, are not consistent or rational.

If you want to elaborate and try and find the consistency, go ahead, I'm willing to stand corrected. But be careful when jumping over quicksand.

The greatest and most pressing civil rights issue of our time? I do hope that's a hyperbole.

I said I hate states rights, and state sovereignty which I wish would die. How does that translate into hating minority rights? States are not individuals nor should they be treated as such. I don't believe the Senate has been a particularly useful institution in protecting minority rights, it gives disproportionate undemocratic power to certain states to the detriment of the country, if minority rights must be protected from the majority let it be done by the Courts, I firmly support judicial supremacy. US Federalism has served its uses, its time we moved toward a unitary system.

The greatest and most pressing civil rights issue of our time? I do hope that's a hyperbole.

No its not.

He better be. DADT certainly isn't the biggest civil rights issue in the US. We still haven't sorted out the gay marriage mess.

I was speaking of the area of gay rights in general.

Let's say I have. Give me just one or two examples of what "acting gay" would be. I'm just curious as to what "acting gay" has to do with DADT. Currently, you can wear pink whenever you're not required to be in uniform, hum showtunes while you work, and generally conform to every gay stereotype that doesn't break army rules. That's the don't ask part. But if you want a picture of your boyfriend on your desk, like straight people get, then you're telling.

Acting gay: Kissing, holding hands, fondling, licking, staring longingly at, etc someone of the same sex.

You really needed a definition?

Having this kind of thing going on inthe open is not good for the good order and discipline of a unit. For proof, just look at mixed sex units and see the myriad of problems that arise with inappropriate male/female relationships.
