Outside Agitators!! Think YOu Can Ruin Our Happy Valley!

As far as I can remember, the OP wasn't always that weird and mildly incoherent. What happened to him?

The only thing that I care about is the fact that some people are arguing that since Sandusky molested some kids and a few top officials at Penn State covered it up, the appropriate response should be to cancel football, for any number of years, thereby interrupting the careers of the football players, killing the chances of a number of high school kids who have no shot at getting into college without a football scholarship, not to mention all of the fans that won't see them play. And why stop there? Why not close Penn State altogether? Go ahead, fire all of the staff, professors, and support personnel. Drag all the students out of their classes, take all their book bags, text-books, and notes, throw them in a pile and set them on fire. Torch the Penn State campuses. Loot their funding. Go ahead, ruin the lives of tens of thousands of other children all for the sake of revenge for the acts of a handful of people. That will take care of everything, won't it? Give each of these kids $10 million dollars for their suffering. Hell, give 'em $100 million. That will make them forget. That will make it okay. Don't worry that tuition will more than double. Don't worry that conditions in the classroom will deteriorate. Don't worry that, again, tens of thousands of other kids will be hurt. Don't worry that America's response to this seems to be to allow the fact that this scumbag hurt a bunch of kids...they will let him hurt thousands more. Good call, America!

No, I don't care about his victims, at all. I don't know them. It was none of my business. In fact, I hate these kids. And its not even their fault. But, now I have to seriously worry that I may not be able to finish college, because these kids must be avenged. They must be avenged and I am among those who will be sacrificed on the altar of 'getting even.'

Yup, that may happen. I'd look at transferring, since you may not be allowed to use FAFSA money next year at Penn State. Thats what happens when you break the Cleary Act.

No I think I've been this way before. I find I need to every rare now and then. :eekdance:

I'm not sure why you think shutting down football for a few years would impact highschool kids. There are other schools in the country, you know. The current roster would be given waivers to transfer without having to sit out a year.

I think if football is that integral to Penn State, then football truly needs to be shut down there for a spell. The reason I favour applying the death penalty to the program is precisely because it seems some people at Penn State, like the OP, just don't get it. They're still more concerned about the legacy and protecting football than they are about fixing the atmosphere at Happy Valley.

Saying "shut 'er down" doesn't fix everything either. It would just make the people who do play/attend/whatever there resent the response to shut down their way of life. I agree that something has to be done, but simply shutting down the whole thing doesn't change or improve people's feelings about it.

I'd like to see some polling done about JoePa at State College, PA and among PSU alumni, but if the apologists I've seen online are even a substantial minority, then that'd be clear evidence of a major institutional problem. That's what the death penalty is good at addressing. This isn't about punishing people who are no longer involved with PSU. It's more of a slap in the face to wake up people.

WRONG. I....I....didn't break any law or act.

And there is no transfer for me. I am an adult who works full-time. If I can't go to Penn State. I can't go, period.

Because some kids can't get into college without an athletic scholarship. Some just dream of playing for the Nittany Lions. Others won't get in simply because the funding isn't there, because it will get looted.

EDIT: Removed admittedly stupid, panic-driven statement of mine.

1) Of course you can. PA has a ton of different universities with online programs.

Also, relax. Penn State is in a TON of trouble, but it's way too big to actually SHUT DOWN. Tuition isnt going ot more than double either.

2) thats what happens when any institution is punished. What happened to all the kids who were served by catholic charities when a diocese shut down from sex abuse lawsuits? They find somewhere else. What happens do customers of companies like Enron? they didn't do anything wrong. Sorry, justice is messy that way.

There is NOTHING that can be done, including nothing, that won't include collateral damages. It's too bad the administration at Penn State didnt think about that before they acted so heartlessly.
Child molestation is a lottery ticket, these days. I wish I had the good fortune to get raped so I could win, too.
That....is disgusting.

You're missing the point punishment of any sort is intended to address:
It's not for revenge, it's to help right a wrong. One of the ways wrongs are prevented in the future is by showing other actors (in this case, other institutional protectors of child rapists) what the potential consequences are.

This is about showing other administrators what will happen if they don't follow society's rules.

This isn't about you.

And I'm not going to address some of the more offensive things you said further on... I hope you don't really feel that way, and you're just reacting out of fear and frustration. Otherwise... yikes.

Wow. I'd say someones rather clueless as to potential long term mental damage/trauma that can occur from this sort of thing.

I don't do well with online classes. I've tried them. I need class time and face-time with instructors. There is ONE campus within driving distance.

Yes, there are plenty of examples of how America is full of a bunch of idiots. Your point? Justice is messy and hurts innocent people. It doesn't have to.

There is NOTHING that can be done, including nothing, that won't include collateral damages. It's too bad the administration at Penn State didnt think about that before they acted so heartlessly.

None of the people who are responsible have a job at Penn State, anymore, and the claim that nothing can be done that won't include collateral damages is nonsense. People just won't accept anything that won't include collateral damages.

That....is disgusting.

It is VERY disgusting that people use every opportunity to turn their grief into a lottery winnings. Why does being molested warrant the winning of millions of dollars? Why do you get rich off of your misfortune? Its one thing if the negligence of an individual or group kills a father or two. Its one thing to have medical bills paid or compensation for real damages, but all you ever hear these days, when something terrible happens is how these people can make millions off of it, regardless of whether they truly deserve it. Getting molested shouldn't make you instantly wealthy. Plenty of people get molested. They don't all have the good fortune to be molested by someone at Penn State.

It is most certainly about me...for me. They're making it about me. Before I started hearing people talking about bankrupting the university and getting the funding cut, I didn't care. I stayed out of it, because it was none of my business. I felt bad for the kids, but I didn't want to get involved. Now, people want to hurt MORE kids in order to avenge Sandusky's victims.

And no, I really don't feel that way. What I really feel is that my future is threatened. I feel like my life may be ruined for the sake of revenge. Because somebody HAS to pay for this. Because EVERYBODY associated with Penn State is responsible for this. I had NOTHING to do with it. Now, I face the real prospect of being stuck working in a hot, dirty factory for the rest of my life, because I may not be able to get federal loans, next year.

So, don't tell me this isn't about me. I wish it wasn't, but now it is.

Wow. I'd say someones rather clueless as to potential long term mental damage/trauma that can occur from this sort of thing.

Not at all.

You still have to be productive, in life. You shouldn't get a free ride, because someone screwed up. I didn't get or ask for a free ride when I was nearly killed. I didn't sue anyone for millions, just because I could. I got my bills paid, I picked myself up, and found a way to be a human being, again. I didn't go out looking for people to hurt to make myself feel better.

Again, I really don't care what they do. I don't care if they want to dig up the corpse of Joe Paterno and take turns kicking him. I don't care if they want to use his skull like a soccer ball. I don't care if they take down every image and statue. I don't care if they want to publicly execute Graham Spanier or anybody else involved. I don't care if they want the state to take over the univeristy, directly, for a few years. Those are common sense responses. But, if they're coming after me, then I take exception to that.

Why rely on a federal loan? Dance your way out of it:

Link to video.

I am dancing for it. It's called the 'work in a hot, dirty aluminum mill dance.'

I have to work for a living. I wasn't savvy enough to turn my own personal tragedies into a winning lottery ticket. Without federal loans, I can't afford to go to college, anymore. It's over, for me. I can barely pay the interest on the federal loans. I won't be able to afford private loans.
