PH02: Eight Angry Men

Inherited Turn (1920 AD) Knowing the GreyFox will be playing after me, I decide to take a look at our cities so I don't end up taking another trip to the woodshed because of some blunder of PholkHero ;) The most common problem I see is a general lack of food. We need biology soon. Our cities are just about topped out in population.

I set up Thermopylae to grow a little faster but without adding any turns to the Coal Plant being built there. I trade a hammer for 7 gold/turn at Harrapan by working one of the gold mines there. In Karakorum, I lay off 3 engineers and hire 3 merchants in their place. If we're going to specialize, we might as well specialize and Karakorum looks like a commerce city to me.

Tabriz just doesn't feel right:
angry24.jpg

I think we should farm that cottage just east of the city and then farm the workshop north of the city. When we get biology, this city will grow nicely.

Oops, I find my first blunder -- in Tiflis (lost the screenshot) Pholkhero's going to the woodshed. There was a plain Citizen. I converted him to an artist to help push back that cultural pressure from Qin.

Calixtlahuaca (you check the spelling) had two artists, probably a vestige of the days when there was a ton of cultural pressure on Texcoco to the north. They're not needed now so I replace them with scientists. In Texcoco, I gain one slice of bread from switching from the rice field to the pig pasture. Way up north in recently acquired Kyoto, we have a scientist and a plain citizen working but nothing available with which to replace the citizen. I switch from the Machine Gun being built there to a Theater so we can hire an artist, instead. The French culture there is a little close for my tastes. Tlaxcala needs culture so I switch from the barracks being built there to a theater.

After that work, our gold per turn went from 85 to 109 at a 50% research slider. So we must have added some beakers too.

Now, let's play!

Athens finishes: Market
Sparta finishes: Coal Plant
Karakorum finishes: Infantry

Our spy arrives in Hangzhou, a small city in our NW sector, just to check on Qin's research. He's working on Radio in 7 turns. He must have just finished flight because he's building a fighter in Chengdu, just to the south. I send our spy east to find out how much it's gonna cost us to break up his spaceship plans.

Tech learned: Biology
Sparta finishes: Observatory
Thermopylae finishes: Infantry
Harappan finishes: Grocer
Beshbalik finishes: Infantry
Tiflis finishes: Work Boat
Dortmund grows: 15
GreyFoxTown finishes: Infantry

Turn 10 (1930 AD)
Research begun: Physics
Sparta begins: Infantry
Thermopylae begins: Infantry
Harappan begins: Spy
Beshbalik begins: Infantry
Tiflis begins: Buddhist Temple
GreyFoxTown begins: Infantry

That's it. I built some military and built some buildings. I think we start sabotaging Qin's spaceship production right now. We're still a long way from a domination victory:
angry26.jpg

We're okay on population but I think we need more than Montezuma's 3 cities. We need 10% more land, Napolean has 15% of the land so if we take two-thirds of his cities, we should be good.

Here's the save. Enjoy!

Okay, so its my turns again, eh?

Scanning the vast empire of Greece ... still remember at one time we were struggling to survive the onslaught of raging barbs? ... looks good, no major gripe for Frankcor, you get to escape woodshe for now. I also applaud the decision of not getting into State Property either by Pholk or Frank or both  ... I assume its a concious decision instead of a careless negligence  ;). WIth this being pangea, and us controlling the versalles coupled with courthouse in most cities, distance maintenance is a mere 32gpt. With mechantilism and representation, one free specialist will give at least 3 beakers, way better than the 32gpt savings considering the number of cities we controlled.

However, that's not to mean that I did not make changes to the state of some cities. Growth & Specialization is the keyword.

Growth: We still have not connected back those nets that are previously pillaged by toku. There are a few cities that should work on farms to grow, so that they can work on more tiles. we don't need that much specialists.

Specialization: Not every city need a factory, coal plants and university. Eg what's the point of building factory in hamburg? Wealth, gentlemen, wealth! We need money. We love money. And Hamburg is the wealth powerhouse, a single merchant gives us 3+200% = 9 gpt.

I tried correcting some cities, but some cities have invested too much production cycle into its current build that I let them pass. Next player please consider the production of each city as and when the city production dialog pops up). Sometimes its better to dedicate some cities to research/wealth than to have them build an infantry for 30 turns.

Okay, enough of being grumpy ... I am suppose to have fun playing this game

First, let's see what Nikita brings us:

Chinese Cities

Guangzhou:

Shanghai:

Beijing:

French Cities

Paris:

Tours:
ph02-AD1935-spy-tours.jpg

As can be seen, Mao is still building only Casing. None of his cities is building thrusters. He is never going to make it to launch before we dominate. Last that I checked, he still needs 1 more casing and all the other parts, yet he started building the Eiffel Tower in Beijing afetr the artillery ... stupid AI :crazyeye:

-- To Be Continued --

Apart from the sneaky esponiage missions, our drill seargeants back in Greece have been churning out fresh troops that would have made Archihilles himself proud. inally, in 1936, I decided enough is enough, and declared on monty:

ph02-AD1936-monty-war.jpg

Made a :smoke: here. See the worker circled in red? IBT, monty send in strike force of artilleries and sam infantries exactly on that spot via transport ... (hmm ... he must have them in transport already before I even declared) ... and stole our worker. :aargh:

While defending, Worker loses to: Aztec Infantry (20.00/20) at 100.0 percent.

One more problem is the holy city to the SE is very lightly defended with only one elephant and one cannon, as I moved most troops up north for invasion. I expect resistance to come from land, but monty surprises me with a landing.

Fortunately, there are troops in the nearby cities which I did prepared for a surprise landings, and they can all attack monty's invasion force in a single turn by travelling on rails. And so the battle begins ... never expected the first battle to break out within our borders :crazyeye:

Infantry promoted: Pinch
Cannon promoted: Barrage I
While attacking, Cannon loses to: Aztec Infantry (14.40/20) at 0.9 percent.
Cannon promoted: Barrage I
Cannon promoted: Barrage II
While attacking, Cannon loses to: Aztec Infantry (8.40/20) at 18.8 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (13.60/20): Aztec SAM Infantry at 96.5 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (9.36/12): Aztec Infantry at 86.8 percent.
Cavalry promoted: Combat I
While attacking, Infantry defeats (10.40/20): Aztec SAM Infantry at 96.5 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (7.44/12): Aztec SAM Infantry at 69.0 percent.
While attacking, Cavalry defeats (2.40/15): Aztec Artillery at 45.6 percent.
Infantry promoted: Pinch
While attacking, Infantry defeats (5.60/20): Aztec Artillery at 87.0 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (12.80/20): Aztec Artillery at 87.0 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Aztec Artillery at 100.0 percent.

Causualties this round: Aztec 8 : Greece 2

This scare prompted me to engage Roman's help, which I think its not necessary in retrospect. Another :smoke:

ph02-AD1937-jc-war.jpg

Afterwhich, its a march of one forces heading NW and one forces heading NE. The forces headed NW reaches its traget city first, and there, Roman destroyers have helped us pulled the defense down a bit. THus, the attack commence in 1939.

ph02-AD1939-tlatelolco.jpg

While attacking, Cannon loses to: Aztec Infantry (14.40/20) at 0.7 percent.
While attacking, Cannon loses to: Aztec Infantry (13.00/20) at 2.2 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (16.20/20): Aztec Infantry at 87.5 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (16.00/20): Aztec SAM Infantry at 51.5 percent.
Infantry promoted: Pinch
Infantry promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Infantry defeats (9.20/20): Aztec Infantry at 95.4 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (1.00/20): Aztec SAM Infantry at 69.0 percent.
Judaism has spread: Tlatelolco (Aztec Empire)
Judaism has spread: Tlatelolco
Hinduism has spread: Tlatelolco
Captured Tlatelolco (Montezuma)

We lost both suicide cannons ... thus casualties for this round: Aztec 4 : Greeze 2 . We also get our worker back.

The forces heading NE reached the target city also in 1939, however, I needed one more turn to pull the defenses down. Thus, at the last of my turnset, the battle begins:

ph02-AD1940-Tenochitlan.jpg

Infantry promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Cannon loses to: Aztec Infantry (17.40/20) at 0.4 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (2.00/20): Aztec Infantry at 74.7 percent.
Infantry promoted: Pinch
Infantry promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Infantry loses to: Aztec Infantry (1.00/20) at 76.5 percent.
Infantry promoted: Pinch
Infantry promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Infantry defeats (7.20/20): Aztec SAM Infantry at 94.7 percent.
Infantry promoted: Pinch
Infantry promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Aztec Infantry at 100.0 percent.
Judaism has spread: Tenochtitlan (Aztec Empire)
Judaism has spread: Tenochtitlan
Hinduism has spread: Tenochtitlan
Captured Tenochtitlan (Montezuma)

Hmm ... lost a suicide cannon (damned, they neer withdrew nowadays!) and an Infantry at 76%. Thus, casualties for the 3rd round: Aztec 3 : Greeze 2 ... seems like the stats is getting worst, but that's because monty has fewer defenders in this cities. We killed a missionary , captured a worker, and sank some ships in this round which are not reflected.

The next player should be able to eliminate Monty for good. We are at 54% give or take, with monty's last city in, we should get close to 56%. That is another 8% needed. I would suggest going for JC rather than Nappy. I think once JC's land is assimilated, we should hit the domination threshold.

One point of note is JC is moving a great artist into our land:

ph02-AD1940-roman-artist.jpg

I think he is going to cultural bomb hs southern most city. Suggest closing border to kick him out.

Speaking of great person, a great engineer is borned in my last turn.

ph02-AD1940-great-engineer.jpg

I will leave the triggering of our 2nd Golden Age to the next player.

We also have a few sources of Uranium, one of which is already in existing mine:

ph02-AD1936-uranium.jpg

Artillery is going to come in 2 to 3 turns, depending on the effect of a golden age. I have also accumulated 700+ gold, which should allow a few cannons to be upgraded to artilleries.

The save is here. Enjoy.

YAY! Great turn set. And thanks for the reminder about specialization. I can't seem to focus on that when those pop-ups occur suggesting useless stuff. You're absolutely right about Hamburg.

I don't think the move to include Caesar in our final war against Monty was so bad. It probably cost him a few units that we won't have to kill when we invade him now.

So, do we wait for Pholkhero or others to return or do we finish this one up? I'm ready to play right now. I think 2 more turnsets should do it. We start a golden age, upgrade some cannon and go take about 2 cities from Ceasar. I suppose we could give Pholkhero the honor of hitting Enter and watching the Domination movie? ::snicker::

Good turns, F&F ~ looks like it's just coasting at this point (he says 2 turns before nappy declares again) ~ I won't be able to play tonight as i've got a couple other games to get at first.

@ Frank ~ a habit i've been getting into is to just "examine the city" every time the build dialog box comes up to make sure the city's not assigning unwanted specialists and what not. It helps (sometimes) to keep cities focused. All those Engineers the AI puts on are a bit ridiculous sometimes.

@ Fox ~ here's the whipping for your :smoke:
:whipped:
:whipped:

Ahhh, that DOES feel good! now i know why you're so hard on us ~ b/c you LOVE us

Hiya gents! I'm back!

@Frank: have you had a chance to play yet, or should I grab it and go?

OK. I'll try to play tonight.

Augh! I didn't play last night (I fell asleep before I had the chance!) Will try again tonight.

better hop to it. I've got a pot of water on for you over at TT03 too

;) :)

i went ahead and played 10. got rid of monty. more tomorrow.

i iwsh i had time for more. I'm here with my 2 kids sans wife today so don't have much time for anything. Quite summary: as i said, Monty's gone. I'm not convinced that a)JC's land will be enough (we're at 56% now) for dom and b)that Nappy will let us alone that long so i started sending troops (I mostly built infantry and artillery) east as well.

As i said, i wish i had time for more but . . .

Who's UP NOW??
