PH02: Eight Angry Men

Sorry guys. My wife went out of town at the end of last week, leaving me with "Daddy duty". I thought I'd have the time to play my turns, but failed to appreciate that I wouldn't have the energy! The wife is home now, so my participation should return to normal (finally).

I got it, and will play tonight.

Hey! Guess what?? I PLAYED!! :p

No significant events occurred, although I did make a few, probably meaningless, deals:

Nappy: Pigs --> 10 GPT
Toku: Cows --> 4 GPT

Julius asked for Open Borders, which I declined, of course.

After sending a couple of Spies to scout out Julius's territory, I decided that we didn't quite have enough units to wipe him out, so I spent my 10 turns continuing to build up our Army. (Mostly Artillery and Infantry.)

Industrialism came in on turn 6, and I managed to build a couple of Tanks and send them to the jump off point. A few more Tanks will finish up next turn, after which we should be ready for the Final Battle. (Thermo and Harrapan can pump them out in only 2 turns!)

Julius has 4-5 Transports available with 5-6 Destroyer escorts, so I expect he'll launch a mini-invasion to try and capture some of Monty's former cities, which are only weakly defended currently. We do have ~ 1200 GP in the bank, so we could upgrade defenses as necessary to hold him off. We might want to build a Settler or two just in case he manages to raze a city - Nappy and Mao will be quick to colonize any open territory. (We've got a trio of Destroyers outside of GreyFoxtown to discourage landings in the West.)

Most of Julius's forces are in Rome and Antium - 7-8 Artillery 10-12 Infantry and a smattering of Cav and SAM Inf. He also built his first Tank last turn. Here is a shot of Rome, showing most, but not necessarily all of his troops, (the screen shot was taken at the beginning of my turns; Julius has a few more troops now):

Rome's sole source of Oil is under Ravenna. I have positioned a pair of Artillery and Infantry (and a Destroyer) just outside the city to cut off his Oil supply at the start of the war. I'm not sure, but I don't think that he has any resources to trade with Nappy or Mao to get more. With his Oil cut off, Rome should fall easily to our massed Artillery, Infantry and Tanks once Julius expends his Artillery and Cavalry. Rolling up the rest will be a snap.

Enjoy the warmongering Frank!

The save is HERE.

alright ~ nice turns, Lob-ster! [*cough* up now in TT03 *cough* oh excuse me] looks like it'll fall to F&F consulting to bring off this war.

Frankcor >> UP NOW
Fox >> on deck (but waiting should Frank fail to fully find the f(S)ave in time)
Pholkhero >>
Lobsterboy >> just played

Munterpipe >> AWOL or still OoP??

[Post deleted because I'm an IDIOT!]

Inherited Turn (1960 AD) Lobsterboy has certainly left us in good position to wipe out Rome. Thanks! I beef up the forces way down south in Ravena. Here is the situation there:
angry27.jpg

I use a bit of our cash promoting two Canon to Artillery in Tabriz a bit north of Ravena just in case things go badly. This may have been a :smoke: move.

I ponder a bit about the pending operation against Caesar. Obviously Rome is the first target.
angry28.jpg

I figure a zig-zag across their lands will work well. But should we invade Roman lands at the start, or do we just declare on him and let him spend his army on a desperate attack on Tlateloko that can only fail miserably? Tell me what you would have done at this juncture. Meanwhile, I'll make up my mind as I press Enter.
Thermopylae finishes: Tank
Harappan finishes: Tank
Berlin grows: 11
Texcoco grows: 12
Kagoshima finishes: University
Tlaxcala grows: 6

Turn 1 (1961 AD)
Thermopylae begins: Tank
Harappan begins: Drydock <-- somehow, the notion of a couple of Combat 1 Battleships in our north sea gives me some comfort.
Kagoshima begins: Infantry
Our destroyer drops the defense of Ravena from 20 to 17%. And so it begins.
While attacking, Artillery loses to: Roman Infantry (6.40/20) @ 20% odds. It put a big hurt on that Roman Infantry. Looks like I won't need the 2nd Artillery.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (9.20/20): Roman SAM Infantry
While attacking, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Roman Infantry
Islam has spread: Ravenna
Captured Ravenna (Julius Caesar) And we pick up 81 gold.
That takes care of Caesar's oil. He shouldn't be able to build tanks now. Next turn, we'll try to pillage his Uranium so he won't be able to build any Battleships.

I decide on the Roper-Doper strategy but then I notice we have 2 workers just outside of Tlateloko. Caesar will snatch them for sure. So I promote some woodsmen infantry and move them and a machinegun onto the forested hill north of Tlateloko, sealing off the chokepoint to land assault. I hope.

Harappan finishes: Drydock
Dortmund finishes: Marine
GreyFoxTown finishes: Destroyer
Calixtlahuaca grows: 16
Kyoto finishes: Harbor

IBT:
While defending, Destroyer loses to: Roman Destroyer (1.50/30) That destroyer in the picture above was our first casualty of the war. The NY Times rips us apart on the next morning's front page.

Turn 2 (1962 AD)
Harappan begins: Battleship
Dortmund begins: Tank
GreyFoxTown begins: Explorer I think I see only 1 medic on the front. We may need more.
Kyoto begins: Battleship

A big chunk of Caesar's navy that was sitting in Cumae is missing this turn. An invasion might be coming from around their northwestern corner. Other than that. I see no movement of his troops coming toward Tlateloko. Oh well, the Ropa-Dope wasted a turn. I start to move our invasion force towards Rome.

Our spy got caught trying to pillage the Uranium. Darn. Gonna start the second one there next turn.

Cologne begins: Tank
GreyFoxTown begins: Tank

Texcoco finishes: Jewish Temple
Munich grows: 13

While defending, Infantry loses to: Roman Tank (23.52/28)
While defending, Infantry loses to: Roman Tank (5.60/28)
While defending, Infantry loses to: Roman Cavalry (1.80/15)

Turn 5 (1965 AD) our second spy is caught, attempting to pillage the Uranium. Sheesh.
Research begun: Rocketry
Thermopylae begins: Tank
Karakorum begins: Tank
Texcoco begins: Drydock
Whew, we took a good hit last IBT but we're still in good shape. I use lots of promotions to speed up healing. Any unwounded artillery are used to bombard Rome's defenses down to 0%. Everyone else is hunkered down, healing one turn and hoping we're in good enough shape next turn to take the city. More tanks are moving up to join our stack.
Infantry promoted: Combat III

IBT: Again, outside Rome:
While defending, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Roman SAM Infantry
While defending, Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Roman Infantry
While defending, Infantry defeats (13.60/20): Roman Infantry
While defending, Infantry defeats (16.80/20): Roman Infantry
Caesar's getting desperate. He just about empties Neapolis trying to kill our stack. Neapolis is left with only two infantry defenders.
Christianity has spread: Kagoshima

Turn 6 (1966 AD)
Harappan begins: Battleship
Calixtlahuaca begins: Tank
Teotihuacan begins: Tank
While attacking, Artillery defeats (4.32/18): Roman Infantry @ 64% odds
While attacking, Artillery defeats (7.74/18): Roman Infantry @ 66% odds
Our next Artillery withdraws after attacking a SAM Infantry (3.2/18) at 47% odds.

The rest of these are all at 100%.

While attacking, Artillery defeats (18.00/18): Roman Artillery
While attacking, Artillery defeats (18.00/18): Roman Artillery

There goes a big chunk of Caesar's army. Along with 4 destroyers and 2 transports.

I split our force, sending half to take Neapolis and half to heal and hold Rome.
Thermopylae finishes: Tank
Dortmund grows: 17

Thermopylae begins: Tank
Dortmund begins: Tank
Essen begins: Courthouse
While attacking, Tank defeats (25.76/28): Roman Artillery

GreyFoxTown grows: 14
Tenochtitlan finishes: Marine

IBT:

Turn 9 (1969 AD)
Sparta begins: Tank
Thermopylae begins: Tank
Beshbalik begins: Tank
Turfan begins: Tank
GreyFoxTown begins: Marine
Kagoshima begins: Hermitage
At Neapolis, our burgeoning navy has already bombarded the defenses to 0. Our first Artillery in withdraws after attacking an Infantry defender (16.8%) at 4% odds. Disappointing result.
While attacking, Artillery loses to: Roman Infantry (10.60/20)
The next artillery withdraws.
While attacking, Cannon loses to: Roman Infantry (8.60/20)
The tanks take over and Neapolis falls:
angry31.jpg

Turn 10 (1970 AD) Well, I screwed up my log file but we built a bunch of stuff, and started some fighters. Rocketry completed and we started Radio. I spent 2200 bucks upgrading all our cavalry to Gunships. They do a great job of force protection when the AI is attacking your stacks aggressively. Caesar hasn't been doing that so far.

I attempted to sabotage production of a Marine due next turn in Antium. Our spy was caught and interrogated. Couldn't see that one coming, eh?

Antium should fall next turn:
angry32.jpg

We've got tons of troops there and a large stack can peel off this turn and head towards Cumae.

Here's where we stand:
angry33.jpg

GreyFox, you're up. Enjoy the warmongering save!

Oooosh ... a measly 3.45% away from victory  .... and who was it that wasn't convinced Roman terriorities alone would've nabbed us domination? I shall prove you wrong. :cooool:

hmm ... wait a minute ... something's fishy here ...

Question: why is it 62% instead of 64% for domination?

Got it, will play tonight.

--

Executive Summary

I was proven wrong. I thought assimilating roman land would push us over the domination limit. I stand corrected.

Inherited Turns

Okay, inherited turns .... check the cities ... hmm ... what the heck. Forget it. I am not going to check every city again. This game is by all accord a won game.

Of-course, there is also the daunting factor of there being over 30 cities ....

Press enter already. I am just going to assume the team is so used to my whipping that they had already cultivated a habbit to check every city before I play

Bye bye, Caesar! I shall miss those salads ...

See the culture slider?

See the cuture slider?

See the culture slider?

I was hoping to attack Nappy in my last turn, just before the 3 roman cities I captured came out of revolt. Yep, just for the fun of it. Afterall, Nappy did declare war on us a few times. Its payback time!

...

See the culture slider?

...

Damned! Miscalculated, and I lost my chane of declaring on Nappy! :aargh:

ph02-AD1979-victory.jpg

As seen from above, the roman cities had yet to come out of revolt! Its so UNFAIR!!!

Anyway, as I said, I was proven wrong. I thought assimilating roman land would push us over the domination limit. I stand corrected. Assimilating only half of roman land is enough.

Thanks, guys, for a fascinating game. I had a wonderful time.

It has been fun whipping you all.

:woohoo:

Excellent turns, GreyFox, and E X C E L L E N T game all ~ i didn't think we were giong to be able to pull it out, but we did!! :yeehaw:

this is my first win on emperoror, so perhaps i've got teh balls to try it on my own now

Yeah! Baby!

Great game fellas! I need to go back and re-read this to figure out, exactly, how we pulled this off! Maintaining good relations with Mao, obviously, was key. Had he joined Toku and Nappy in a dogpile, we would have been cooked.

Whoo whoo! I think back to how scared I was when three of the Angry Men declared war on me, several times! I learned a lot about warfare through all the ages in this game. It was fun and a great learning experience!

I'm a little disappointed that GreyFox didn't check all our cities -- I had made a pass through on my final turn knowing he would be coming behind me with his whip.

Heh heh -- that's a little white lie.
