PH02: Eight Angry Men

Ok, another set of turns where absolutely nothing happens, excpet for 2 barbs archers who suicide themselves to our archers.

Good news is, we ar enot last in culture. We aint 2nd last either. That's reasuring :)

ph02-BC0235-cultured-civ.jpg

Trade situation did not improve ... wait a bit before trading. Monty did came demanding Alphabet ... I told hm where he can shove his feathers up into.

ph02-BC0100-trade.jpg

Granary is abt to be completed in Athens ...

ph02-BC0100-sit.jpg

I suggest whipping the granary next turn and have the overflow hammers go into another settler. We could settle the city up north to grab the corn and the cows, but careful, monty is there already. Else, the overflow hammer should go to an axe. Time for us to start kicking some butt.

Next we should be pumping out axes to take out the barb city, and maybe start killing Bismarck.

>>> The Save (BC100) <<<

Sweet. We're back on track, folks, thanks to GreyFox.

I think we should put the overflow into a some phalanxes and axes and go for the Barb city as number 4.

again, i think we should head for genghis as i don't think Mongolia will cause as big of a problem. With their culture levels so low [and germany's so high], i think their def bonuses will be lower and we'll lose less units. Then, with cats and maybe elephants augmenting our veteran army of axes and phalanx, we can waltz into Germany ~

@ Frank ~ if there's no check-in by tonight from Lobster, go ahead and play some since you've been OoP for so long.

Well, I'm back. My in-laws were visiting for the long weekend. I thought I'd have some time to play, but I didn't even have time to login to say I was going to be away. Sorry.

EDIT: I got the save, and can play tonight.

awesome!!! let's smash somebody :hammer:

i guys, i just got this C R A Z Y idea

let's send a unit into each of empire and L O O K and S E E what kind of defenses they have :crazyeye:

I think it's called, Scooting or Scutting out -- SCOUTING out! yeah, that's it...scouting out. wha'dya say :groucho:

Inherited Turn (100 BC)
Upped research rate to 90% - Horseback Riding in 2.

Turn 1 (85 BC)
Granary in Athens :whipped:
Me thinks Mao is headed for the Barb city (Harapan). He has an Axeman and Spearman traversing our Empire.

Genghis has an offer for us:

Maybe later. (Jeez. Do we really smell that bad?)

IBT: Julius completes The Colossus
Toku discovers Code of Laws and converts to Confucism.

Turn 2 (70 BC)
Technology discovered: Horseback Riding --> Drama (22)
Athens completes: Granary --> Axeman (1)
I notice that Toku has Alphabet, so I decide it's about time we started to trade it around before he does:

Napoleon: Mathematics
Mao: Meditation + Iron Working
Julius: Agriculture + Polytheism + Sailing
Hopefully we can get some more next turn (Priesthood? Monotheism?)

Good news! We have Iron! The bad news is that it is not within the fat cross of any of our cities! (see below)
Bismarck also has some, and there is Iron SW of Ghengis and S of Sparta, but on the ice.

IBT: Toku completes the Great Lighthouse

Turn 3 (55 BC)
Athens completes: Axeman --> Axeman (7)
Our new Axeman sets off in the footprints of Mao's assault force to, hopefully, snatch Harapan from him when he attacks.
Trade Ghenghis: Polytheism for Priesthood
Switch research to Construction (20) @ 100%

Turn 4 (40 BC)
Thermopylae completes: Granary --> Axeman (8)

Turn 5 (25 BC)
Two more of Mao's Axemen turn up S of Athens to begin a journey across our Empire toward Harapan.

Turn 6 (10 BC)

Turn 7 (5 AD)
Barbarian Archer heads for our Pigs, our Phalanx in Athens moves out to defend.

Turn 8 (20 AD)
Four of Napoleon's Archers show up N of Athens, probably headed for Harapan.

IBT:While defending, Greek Phalanx loses to: Barbarian Archer (1.56/3) :aargh:
Damn! But, hopefully, Mao's Axemen will dispatch him for us. (Please note the Iron in the shot below).

Turn 9 (35 AD)
Yep. Mao's Axemen take car of our marauding Barb Archer.

IBT:Harapan spawned a Barb Archer a couple of turns ago, and takes on our Archer defending on the hill to the E of the town:
While defending, Greek Archer (2.0/3) defeats: Barbarian Archer

Turn 10 (35 AD)
Athens completes: Axeman --> Phalanx (6)
Thermopylae completes: Axeman --> Axeman (5)

Mao's Axeman defeated a Barb Archer in Harapan, but his Spearman did not attack. Only one defending Archer remains, so it's now or never.
The odds favor our Axeman (~ 69%) after a Cover I promotion, so let's hope the RNG is kind...
Axeman loses to: Barbarian Archer (0.36/3) :cringe: Nope!
But fortunately, I brought along the Phalanx that was guarding our Copper!
Phalanx defeats (5.00/5): Barbarian Archer

Captured Harappan (Barbarian)

We also capture a Barb Worker! HUZZAH![party]

And so begins the Common Era.

Monty will also trade us Monotheism for Alphabet, but I decided to possibly hold out for Monarchy later. Feel free to make the deal if you see fit. Nobody else is willing to trade us Calendar, Monarchy or Code of Laws. Also, we are still the only civ with Horseback Riding, so we still have trade bait. I predict someone will demand it during the next set of turns!

I also sent our Archer N of Thermopylea to start exploring Monty's lands. Monty has Iron and Gems in his closest city.

That's a fine, fine city there!! wheat and cows + 2 gold  we've got gold out our ears...

edit: oh, Good Turns (TM) Lobster! ;) nice bringing along the insurance phalanx.

Yes, it turned out to be a better city than I thought; I didn't realize that the Wheat was even there until after I captured the city!

Another uneventful set of 10 turns:

Inherited Turn (50 AD)
Sparta grows: 4
Sparta finishes: Axeman

Turn 1 (65 AD)
Sparta begins: Phalanx

Turn 2 (80 AD)

IBT: Julius Caesar demands Horseback Riding. Sure. No problemo. He goes from cautious to pleased. (why doncha pick on somebody your own size, jerk?)

Turn 3 (95 AD)
Harappan begins: Obelisk

Turn 4 (110 AD)
Thermopylae finishes: Axeman

Turn 5 (125 AD)
Thermopylae begins: Library
Athens finishes: Phalanx

Turn 6 (140 AD)
Athens begins: Library

IBT: Tokugawa declares war on Napoleon -- good, number 1 vs number 2. It's all good.

Turn 7 (155 AD)

IBT:
Christianity founded in a distant land

Turn 8 (170 AD)

Turn 9 (185 AD)
Sparta grows: 5

IBT: Napoleon asked for help against Tokugawa. I refused.

Turn 10 (200 AD)

I sent out 4 scouts, in total. Two are exploring west and have just about completely revealed the map there. One phalanx is just starting to reveal map in Germany to our southeast. And an archer is exloring Aztec lands up north. Monty has a LOT of territory to himself.

I think I've got fog busting set up down south so that there are no unrevealed tiles. But maybe we should consider backing up a bit in hopes the barbarians build an ice-city for us to mine more iron?

Oh, somebody just shoot me. I messed Athens up. On my last turn, it had grown unhappy and while checking options, I accidently pop-rushed a Phalanx for 1 population point, causing even more unhappiness. What a mess. CLEAN-UP IN AISLE 6!

Sweet, way to blow an easy turnset frank! we'll have to whip YOU for one pop now, too! :)

maybe i'll swap it to a worker then next. I'll pick up the save today and play later on tonight ~ viva la Greece (sidenote: do you think the Agg/Philo trait will mesh well with the Great Generals??)

Oh, how 'bout just whip me for a 100-pound-loss? Swapping to a worker makes sense. I wish I'd have thought of it.

Agg/Philo might even be an exploit with Great Generals. Imagine a super GP farm pumping out GGs.

should i not mention the lack of screenshots :mischief:

Imagine a super GP farm pumping out GGs.
I HAVE been :mischief:

t00/200 ad:
Okay, my first plan of action was to queue up a Worker to start after the whipped phalanx finishes at Sparta.

t01/215:
Toku wants us to go to war with France ~ i say no.

t02/230:
Nothing much.

t03/245
Toku comes back, and demands that we stop all trading with France. He's annoyed with us from saying no, so decide to say yes. I immediately regret it as Nappy is a Buddhist, as is our dear neighbor Bismarck. Sorry :smoke:

t04/260
Mao comes by and we come to terms:
maodeal8yx.jpg

t05/275
Meanwhile, that sneaky German founds another city near us!
stuttgart3vt.jpg

t06/290:
Buddhism spreads to our lands and I decide to revolt to get some Diplo boni with many of the other AIs. So, the Greeks have become buddhists ~

t07/305:
We now have enough money for research. Go 100% Sci and Construct is due in 5 turns.

t08/320:
Now that we're Buddhist, Monty calls us up:
monty5yj.jpg

t09/335:
I reroute the few units i have going towards Mongolia to make them head for Azteca to the north. I don't trust that Monty. Meanwhile, our exploring archer finds Rome:
rome5si.jpg

t10/350:
Sparta: Worker>Phalanx
Athens: library>Phalanx

t11/365:
Harrappan survives a barb attack, warrior vs archer so not much of a contest ~

t12/300:
Contruction in and i made the moves, but the real discussion needs to be about which tech we should go for next,
science1pc.jpg

and what to do in general ~ i don't think we can afford to turn our backs on Monty now, but . . .
