Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Can someone explain to me exactly how cultural border clash works?

Do they make a check every turn, because I have noticed that some tiles will come under my dominion even though the cities borders haven't expanded anymore.

Anyone now in numbers how this works?
You probably want to read this article. :)

Basically - every tile that you own, you put a bit of culture into each turn (more for tiles closer to the city, less for tiles far from the city). If your city is generating a large amount of culture per turn relative to nearby cities, then after a time those tiles will probably become yours.

Hi everybody...

I'm just wondering, I have the first game Civilization 4, but none of the expansions... I just had my first experience with civ 4 and got hooked :)

Now i'm wondering about the expansions: If I buy beyond the sword and in this game I get a new unit: "unit 1" and I then buy warlords, do I still have "unit 1" from beyond the sword, when playing warlords or is it two separate games ?

Also, what is this Civ 4 colonization?... When I read info about it from gamesites, it sounds like a different type of game than the 3 first games... Is it a different game or is it just an expansion like beyond the sword and warlords ?

Thx for your time :)

Welcome to the CFC forums, DCNR! :D

They're two separate expansion packs; Warlords came first, and Beyond the Sword came second. As such, if you're playing Warlords then you will not see any units from Beyond the Sword. However, it's important to realise that if you have Beyond the Sword, you do not need Warlords, as all units/buildings/wonders/techs/etc from Warlords are included in Beyond the Sword. In fact, the only things in Warlords that aren't included in Beyond the Sword are a few minor scenarios (such as where you can play as the barbarians). If it is the main game that interests you however, then you can safely skip Warlords and go straight for Beyond the Sword - and save your money in the process! :)

It's a completely different game. I'm not familiar with it myself, but it's not part of the main Civilization series. Maybe someone else will be able to tell you more. ;)

So, as I understand it, since I own CivIV and BtS, I'd gain nothing from buying the bundle just to obtain Warlords. I understand that all of the units and such from Warlords are included in BtS, but are all the leaders, as well?

Yes, all of the leaders are included as well. Put simply, everything in a regular game of Warlords is included in Beyond the Sword. The only items not included are a few separate scenarios which are unrelated to the main game.

So: If you've got Civ4 and BTS, definitely don't buy Warlords. You won't gain anything from it. :)

To help clarify this point, Civ4 Colonization is a remake of the original Sid Meier's Colonization (a Civ1-era game), using the Civ4 engine. You can think of it as a "professional" mod of Civ4. It is a separate, stand-alone game. You do not need Civ4 to play it. The only relationship it has to Civ4 is that it uses the same engine underneath.

Someone mentioned at some point that it is possible to use the World Builder to "sculpt" the walls of the Great Wall wonder to your liking. How on earth is this done?

If you go into WB and, inside the Map Editor compartment, switch into the last tab, you can essentially "paint" areas of cultural control onto the map. Provided that the Great Wall is built at the beginning of the next turn, the zones won't revert before the graphics for the wall are established. The zone of cultural control probably won't be permanent (in fact, I can almost guarantee that they won't be), but they'll exist long enough to dummy the game engine into placing the Great Wall at the border you've painted rather than the real cultural border.

Allright...

I really like the skirmishes or "custom game" as the menu in civ. 4 says... So I think ill skip Warlords then... Thx for saving me money and for all responses :)

I believe that the Civilisation Complete compilation is not only easier to install, but also more stable as well.

Civilization Complete incorporates all of the patches that have come out. But if you already own Civilization IV and Beyond the Sword, and have installed the patches issued, you're pretty much on the same standing as those buying CC...except you're about $40 richer.

Heh - or about £25 or so. Fair enough :D

Where can I post a request for a scenario/modpack?

EDIT: Also, Is it possible to mod civ 4 so that a certain technology can only be researched by certain civs?

This thread looks like what you want. :)

EDIT: Also, Is it possible to mod civ 4 so that a certain technology can only be researched by certain civs?
Not sure. I know it's possible to make technologies only researchable when you're in a certain religion, as that was done in Fall from Heaven. I suggest you ask one of the Fall from Heaven mod makers about it. I'm guessing there's some way to do what you want, but I'm not sure how easy it'd be.

I just downloaded "earth 40 civs" mod, where I put the file?
\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods, right?

Then I start the mod, but where should I then go to actually play the map? I can't see it anywhere?
Thanks!

edit: also, is this a good mod? I want to play the biggest earth map with much civs... :D any other nice (big) mods for real earth?

Advanced->Load Mod->40 civs->will restart civ in "40 civs" mod ( the name of the mod will be written in the starting screen in the upper right corner in white letters )

About the mod: it does what it is supposed to do, but remember that some rules of the game weren't thought for games with more than18 civilizations ( like event triggers, for example ). Be prepared for that.
