Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hopefully this question is in the right spot...

I found these tutorials showing how to compile the CvGameCoreDLL (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=196283) plus this one
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=293958

But I've got Visual C++ express 2008 and BTS and Vista is the tutorial correct for my setup? Plus the windows SDK (apparently the successor to the Platform SDK ) for Vista/VC++ 2008 is a 1.4 GB download... Is it really necessary? gulp...

No problems got it sorted :)

Hi,
I want to start modding civ campaign games, I was wondering where I could find some tutorials?

How do I get files saved to my thumb drive into Civ IV Beyond the sword?
The BtS single player saves are stored by default in (...) \Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Saves\single ( in windows, that is ). Just go there and copy/paste the save you want to put there. Anyway, you don't need that to start a game , given that, atleast in Windows, double clicking the save file will start the game and load the save automatically.

Everytime i select custom game, my default name is the computers windows profile name. I started a new profile inside civ4 with my name, but it doesnt appear to override it. Using warlords 3.13

not a n00b to civ4, but am a n00b to succession games. I've read through some of the threads on the site and they sound like fun. any other succession game new people feel like starting one up? i know the hour is late for civ4 with 5 around the corner, but what can I say? I'm a junkie!

is there a way to subscribe to a forum thread without posting?

At the top middle right of the thread page look for "thread tools". Click on that and the bottom options allows you to subscribe or unsubscribe to the thread.

Being that my flavour of os is vista and version of VC++ express is 2008 I needed the windows sdk rather than the platform sdk. You can downloaded it from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-C913-4B5C-B87E-EF72E5B4E065&displaylang=en).

Weighing in at just under 1.4 GB (the iso is approx 200 MB larger than the web download) it is a hefty download but Microsoft will deliver DVD's. Check here (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowssdk/archive/2009/02/17/order-windows-sdk-psdk-on-disk.aspx) to see what's available, if you have a dial up modem this might be the way to go.

The civ4 SDK download is probably for the original game. If you want to edit the dll for either Warlords or BTS the sdk is in the CvGameCoreDLL folder, which for me is:

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\CvGameCoreDLL

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Warlords\CvGameCoreDLL

so no need to download the sdk it should already be on your hard disk. I found a good tutorial re installing the sdk for BTS here:

http://modiki.civfanatics.com/index.php/How_to_Install_the_SDK

When you've compiled the CvGameCoreDLL.dll the place for it is in the Assets folder:

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Assets

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Warlords\Assets

Don't forget to make copies of all original files, you never know when you might need them...

Did you save your new profile and make it the default? I messed around with that long ago and the default is now my name.

Myself, I don't care what name the game selects because before doing anything else on the first turn, I change the name that I am using so that every game has a different name that I can identify in the Hall of Fame listing. I usually choose "my" name to be something that I associate with the civ that I am playing as in that game.

I would like the AI to address me by the name of the leader that I'm using and I can't figure out how to set it back to that as the default.

Also I have two other questions:
how do I link to this page in my signature?
I uploaded a save from the strategy and tips forum and played about 75 turns before I realized that the random events were on, and I would like to turn them off but continue from where I left off instead of starting over, how can I do that?

Is there no way to cancel a vassalization? I fear my vassal is going to drag me into a war that I'd rather not get involved in.

Your vassals can't declare war without you and no, there is no way to cancel a vassalage without using the World Builder.

If you accept a vassal that is at war you'll be dragged into it. Your role as the master is to keep your vassal safe. You can torment your vassal into attempting to break free by demanding all of his resources.

how can you break vassalge ties with another civilization??

You can't, at least not easily.

If it was a voluntary thing--i.e. you weren't at war with them when they became your vassal--you could try ticking them off by demanding resource trades, declaring war on their friends, running a different religion, switching away from their favourite civic... but none of that might work.

If they capitulated as a result of war, you will need, as bestrfcplayer said, to have their land and population exceed 50% of yours. You could try gifting them cities and stuff to achieve this, but it seems kind of counter-productive.

And if you created a colony, you're stuck with them for life.

The only other option is to go to war with someone big and powerful who's very close to your vassal and hope that they wipe them off the map. Which is, perhaps, what you should have done in the first place.

They are hard to get rid of. So maybe look at some of the pluses. In my current game I (Saladin) had a voluntary vassal on my continent (Pacal) and I immediately traded them 1 copper (i have 5) for 6 good resources that they only had 1 each of. This gives them a strategic resource to help me fight wars and provides lots of happiness and health resources for my cities. Besides choking off their cities due to lack of resources.
