Controversial EU copyright change faces key vote

EU lawmakers are set to vote on a controversial copyright reform that could change how internet companies treat uploaded content from users.

A version of the proposal was rejected in July after a grassroots campaign, and fierce campaigning on both sides.

Critics fear the rules are too broad and could affect parodies, remixes, and even links to articles and websites.

But many musicians, authors, and other creators back the reforms which they view as necessary to support artists.

Hundreds of changes have been made since the July vote, but opponents say major issues remain.

I was a huge fan of Sam Adams* until I moved to the Philippines. I'm convinced the tropics changes one's taste buds. Now I want only watered-down tasteless beer.

Very true, the IPA's particularly from the west coast are my favorite beers in the world. I think they are better warmer than they are served though. Not warm, cellar temperature is what is generally considered best, about 15 C.

I keenly remember you being exactly like this person just two weeks ago here on the ol Cee Eff Cee.

Why should the EU be consulted at all? Member states are still sovereign nations and should be allowed to make such decisions without "approval" from Brussels.

No, they haven't. That post was more of a response to those who think the EU should have a say in such a matter.

The EU does not have sovereign authority over its member states, no matter how much it's supporters wishes it did. I think supporters of the EU forget that fact and also forget that member states are allowed to make their own decisions even if they go against established EU policy or EU interests. And they should be allowed to do so without being threatened with statements like the one Synsensa made. Such statements show that whoever makes it does not see all members of the EU as equal partners for international cooperation, but rather see them as nothing more than vassal states that should just do what Brussels wants without any argument or dissent.

European Parliament backs copyright changes

Controversial new copyright laws have been approved by members of the European Parliament.

The legislation had been changed since July when the first version of the copyright directive was voted down. Critics say it remains problematic.

Many musicians and creators claim the reforms are necessary to fairly compensate artists.

But opponents fear that the plans could destroy user-generated content, memes and parodies.

Leaders of the EU's member states still need to sign off on the rule changes before the individual countries have to draft local laws to put them into effect.

The vote in Strasbourg was 438 in favour of the measures, 226 against and 39 abstentions.

Yeah, I don't like drinking the craft beers too cold. I like them a little colder than room temperature but only a little. And if they do happen to be room temperature it's fine.

As Cutlass says there is a loooooooooot of stuff covered under "American beer." The large brands, the Budweisers, Sam Adamses, etc. are generally crap. Craft beer/microbreweries otoh can be very very good, some of the best in the world in fact.
