Mercenary work is less likely to end him up in prison, and I assume the risk of death isn't that big of a deterrent.

But what about his duties as a father? If ensuring his family has money is the primary goal, it doesn't seem to matter how that comes about. Drug trade and thievery are great moneymakers and you have the benefit of staying at home, too.

Wanting to leave your family to go play war is selfish, regardless of the paycheque. The financial well-being of your loved ones is an afterthought and justification, not a starting point of which to build upon, especially when the immediate solution is something with a fancy risk of gruesome death and, even if you don't die, you won't see your family enough for it to matter anyways.

Well the way I see it, I already have a skillset that could potentially make me a lot of money, so why should I take the time to learn a new skillset that might make me a mediocre amount of money? With the free house my parents plan on giving us, I should be able to put a lot of money towards investments that will allow me to retire and spend the rest of my days making up for all that time I had to spend away from my family.

If you're getting a house for free then a decently-plying job should be more than enough. Don't go off into adventure and leave a damaged family behind just because of the thrill, man.

It's not the thrill, it's what I genuinely love doing. Would you have such a dim view if I were leaving my family to go do charity work? If not, then is your issue with me leaving my family, or is it what I would be leaving my family to go do?

I'm seriously behind on work this week because I was helping family. Which I don't mind, but geez, it's going to be a late night and a long weekend.

"damn kids these days" has been going on since the beginning of time. Don't worry, soon it will be your turn to be the angry old person!

…
Both. If you're going to ditch your family then do it for a worthwhile cause. I hope I don't sound too caustic, I've had a long day and there's all this Paris stuff to cap it off so I'll turn in.

Inside every young person is an old person... biding their time.

And inside every old person is a young person who is angry about being old.
You speak wise, sagely words as always, mister Borachio.

man, Master of None (the aziz ansari netflix show) is terrible

I blame myself for checking it out after ignoring it when it first appeared. It's still brand new. But for instance, the standard promotional loop was taken (e.g. saw Aziz Ansari on Colbert, describing the show as yea, a single 30 year old actor who is trying to figure out his life). And random internet commenters saying something like "oh I was actually surprised to see a kind of funny show dealing with the stuff I'm kind of facing in my late twenties/early thirties"

It's a show about people who do no work with lots of free time and plenty enough money having relative fun & sex in New York City, with the main character being a tv commercial actor getting a hot awesome girlfriend, with the occasional laugh [limited exclusively to the first half of the 10 episodes]

edit- not surprising but just more my hate for the reviews/advertisement/apparent reception of [random] internet people

I watched the first episode and found it pretty meh

Can people please refrain from repeating the usual discussions about islam on this thread?

You can ask for it, but it sure as hell won't happen.

For me I heard about Master of None through the Asian-American community, and a lot of Asians in general (both South Asians and East and southesat Asians) seemed to be interested in it because it had an Asian as the leading man and, supposedly, delves into some topics relevant to the contemporary Asian community, especially other twenty or thirty something young professionals. Though when I watched the trailer I got a sex comedy and upper-middle-class-kids-sitting-around-doing-nothing vibe that kind of isn't of interest to me. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows.

I hate the whole stupid process of submitting a paper to a journal. Just let me send the damn thing in, instead of having to jump through a whole bunch of hoops to do it.

I don't think anyone likes that. But congrats for submitting.
