Unfortunately, he must have missed noticing that while it may sell, it didn't do anything to really enhance his novel.

Well, yeah. But it did enhance the next one...in that if this one doesn't sell there won't be a next one. I'm certainly open to the more literary view rather than crass commercialism, but I also acknowledge that what differentiates a professional author from a hobbyist writer is frequently just that the professional can navigate a balance between "commitment to his art" and the necessity of making a living at it.

How do they explain people who love broccoli and spinach but hate most of the others? I can't stand cauliflower unless it's pickled.

What do you mean ‘potentially’?

It must probably be a recessive gene now that I think of it. Older generations in my family eat the stuff.

You are forgiven.

It would most likely be a combination of multiple genes, at least some of them recessive. I know all my kids like broccoli, and so does their mother, but my father didn't so it can't be as simple as just a single gene on off switch.

As to cauliflower...that leads into totally mysterious territory. Valka, you aren't the only person I know that doesn't like it even though they like pretty much everything related. I know even more people who like cauliflower but draw some sort of line at brussel sprouts that I can't explain. I'm going to speculate that there is a genetic marker that may make some people more sensitive to a particular component they register as bitter that I just don't register at all, but that flavors are complex so even though you apparently don't register that either there is something else in the flavor of cauliflower that you don't like. For me, cooked spinach is totally out because of the texture, so I can't really comment at all on flavor because I would never put it in my mouth.

Then there's Tak, who just has no sense about flavor at all.

I really enjoy broccoli and cauliflower but despise brussel sprouts. Broccoli smells like brussel sprouts but doesn't taste like it.

I like broccoli and brussels sprouts (the small ones are bread to taste better). I can eat cauliflower, but find it tasteless.

I don't know if I like broccoli. My mother doesn't like it, so I've never had a chance to try it.

Cursed nextoptim.com keeps redirecting me to a fake microsoft or norton site, telling me that my windows is irreversibly corrupted. Worst of all, it's embedded in not just this sites ads, but seemingly every site that uses google ads.

Oh no, no, no. No you bloody didn't, you broccoli-eating, spinach-hating guzzler of high-fructose corn syrup.

I don't hate spinach. If I hated it I wouldn't protect it from being cooked. And I've never guzzled HFCS, at least not straight. I confess to the broccoli eater part. :yumyum:

I must have an odd combination of genes, then. I don't like raw broccoli, but if it's cooked right, I could happily eat it every day. I didn't like spinach until I finally had the chance to try it properly prepared (my dad had friends who owned one of the Greek restaurants in town; after that, I realized that spinach is wonderful stuff).

Brussels sprouts were on the menu during my recent hospital stay. It's been over 50 years since my mother first tortured me with those vile things, and I pointed to them on my tray and told the nurse, "I am not going to eat those."

I can't fathom how anyone can eat radishes. Turnips... I liked them for a few days back when I was about 5. Kohlrabi, on the other hand, is great as long as it's fresh.

I don't know if I like broccoli. My mother doesn't like it, so I've never had a chance to try it.
:(

You've been missing something really good. My favorite Chinese restaurant puts a couple of pieces of broccoli in their won ton soup.

It's supposed to detect malware, if your computer has any. I've found it useful.

I had the same problem with my last laptop, and multiple scans found nothing, plus i'm not the only one.
Not to mention it only does it on sites that have Google Ads.(i.e. it has never happened to me on wikipedia or sites that use different ad providers)
Especially annoying "ads"

OTOH it was a 42 ºC (humidex) day today and it was suffocating. @#~½¬! heatwave.

I see that and raise you -60F.

In other news, waiting for the bus is going to suck, though the bus shelters are equipped with a heat lamp.

Hm, I suspected that your ISP might be injecting advertisements in, but I don't believe that's possible for sites that use HTTPS like this one. It might be worth changing your DNS anyways. 8.8.8.8 is Google's server.

Yes, you want to let them cool about 15 minutes or so before you move them. What I do is lift my parchment paper off and put it on my cooling rack with the cookies, then when they're cool they'll slide right off.

Making cookies from scratch isn't hard at all, I can give you tips if you're interested. You're mostly mixing butter and sugar.

Or if you're here in the US I can send you cookies.
You should record a cookie making video and walk the ignorant through the steps to success. Of course, you would post it here first.

Trying to track down some books that I used to have but got destroyed by mildew. Went to Amazon.ca to check one out for future reference. It sells for $96. Then clicking on other prices brings up a completely different book from a different author. WTH?

It's not on the Open Library, either. Grumble...

A completely different book, or a different edition (with different cover art)?

Agreed that some prices on Amazon are insane. But there are lots of other online booksellers you can try (some of the Marketplace sellers have their own websites), and there's eBay as an alternative (unless you buy from an American seller - mind the postage).

Which book is it?
