All they need to do is look at a photo and listen to speeches of former Prime Minister Jean Chretien. He had polio as a child, and was fortunate to live through it and go on to lead a relatively normal life. He still has partial paralysis from it, though, which is why his facial features are lopsided and he has difficulty speaking.
