Random Rants 80: Computer Says No

Ugh, my condition has turned into a full blown cold, and I'm miserable. I've completely lost my voice this morning. I've got a trip for work in two days ... if I don't get better fast, at least my colleagues won't have to put up with my whiny, nasally, grating voice :D

Rant #2: typing is really hard when your cat's trying to force you to pet her.

Rant #3: too warm again, going up to like 86 today, and it's rainy and humid out there. I just want some consistent fall weather so I can transition my wardrobe.

Rant #4: yesterday while we were at an event at our local greenhouse, I saw three baby kittens I wanted to adopt very badly (sisters, I was going to name them Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene), but Mr KB put his foot down and wouldn't let me have them.

I have stopped bringing my wife with me when I go to the pet store for food since they usually have many kittens for adoption and we already have two at home.

Rant: My mother has a cold. This means I'll end up with one in a couple of days. :undecide:

WTH is wrong with Mozilla and security certificates? It's pulling the old ‘certficates are invalid’ trick again. :twitch:
Ugh, my condition has turned into a full blown child
I seriously misread it as that because of a blurry contact lens. :eek2:
A replacement one will cost… oh so much…

As jealous as I often am of people wearing contacts, glasses can be wiped so much more easily. ;)

I've considered trying contacts, but having to touch my eyes to put them in freaks me out. Plus the cost of them.

I used to feel that way too, but it's really not so bad once you get used to it. I find I can see so much better, and they're more comfortable. Also, my prescription's so strong, my eyes look really tiny when I'm wearing my glasses, and I feel I look much better with contacts.

@Arakhor contacts don't normally need cleaning, they don't get dirty like glasses do. Also they don't fog up, and you can wear any sunglasses style you want :)

I recently took the plunge and bought photoreactive lenses, which are a godsend, especially when coupled with a baseball cap to cut out any stray beams of strong light.

What's your prescription, Mary?

You're getting dangerously close to becoming an American dad, Arakhor.

Well, if I'd ever taken the opportunity to sow my premium oats, I'd be a British dad, so sharing a poor reaction to strong light with other people of my age bracket is to be expected, I suppose. :)

I'm -6.5

It's no shame , mine are super-strong too ;) I am a human telescope by now :D

You're right, the eye-touching thing gets fairly easy after the first week. The only drawback I feel with them is that they tend to make my eyes very dry after 8 to 10 hours. Over the years I have upgraded the quality of lenses I was using from crappy monthly lenses to nice monthlies and finally to really nice dailies but I've only ever gotten marginal improvements to day-end dry eye with each upgrade.

I wear glasses at night and on the weekend (or every day, now that I'm unemployed and trying to save money) and transitions lenses (photoreactive) is a huge improvement over regular glasses. Next time though, I'll skip on the anti-glare coating. I find that with anti-glare coatings, the lenses get smudged very easily. I talked to an optometrist about that and he said it's due to the way the coating sits on top of the glass - when anything then gets on top of that coating, it bends the incoming light much more severely than similarly smudged, but non-coated lenses. Apparently there are some coatings that are better about this than others but most eye doctors don't sell the good stuff and I'd just as soon not take a chance on it. Really, the smudging thing is quite almost as big of annoyance as the transition lenses are an improvement. I simply cannot keep these glasses clean for more than a few minutes.

Ultimately I hope to get laser eye corrective surgery in the next five years or so and be done with all of it.

Micro fiber cloths have made glasses cleaning quicker and easier. I keep one where ever I likely to spend any amount of time. (at my desk at work, in the car, in my golf bag, next to my computer at home) Much better than when I was a kid.

I know and I've used them for years. They don't work as well with my particular anti-glare lenses. They don't get them as clean as my older glasses and then my glasses still foul absurdly quickly after each cleaning.

Every pair of glasses I've ever worn tend to also funnel face grease directly into my eyeballs as well. :(

I keep one in my purse ... even though I don't go out wearing my glasses, you never know when you might need one. Works really well for sunglasses too.

I wore my glasses today, when I'm sick my eyes get a bit swollen. I didn't put on any makeup eirher, and I look like a hideous frumpy mess.

I rather doubt that, especially with your brilliant blue eyes.

I don't think crying will make your eyes less swollen.
