Random Rants #88: [incoherent screaming]

Resisting the urge to quit my job on the spot. The struggle is, I have enough savings that I could get by for two, probably three months of frugal living, but that would be a pretty stupid decision financially speaking even if the job market wasn't as weak as it is.

It's not the first time it happened either. A few years ago somebody was fined 8 million for setting a wildfire while setting off gender-party fireworks.

Why are you setting off fireworks to reveal what genitals an unborn baby has anyways? That's just weird.

Agreed. I never understood the whole "gender reveal party" trend. Just seems like a bunch of desperate attention seekers trying to "go viral" by doing something zany. I think my theory is sound since this gender reveal party crap didn't really start until social media and internet fame became a thing.

Rant: For some reason Games Workshop pulled the box of Necron Warriors from their website for some unexplained reason. Like, it's just gone. Not temporarily out of stock or sold out, just gone. It doesn't even come up when you search for it with the site's search function. I tried emailing their customer service to get more information, but it's been over a week and still haven't heard back, although they did say it could take up to ten business days to get a response since they are swamped with emails due to that being the only way to contact customer service until the pandemic is over.

Anyway, I'm upset about this because I wanted to buy some Necron Warriors so I could use them instead of the little cardboard counters for the Space Marine Adventures boardgame I bought. The plan is to replace all the counters with actual miniatures to give the game more personality. The frustrating thing is all the other Necron miniatures I need are still for sale, it's just the Warriors that seemed to have vanished into the aether.

Thinking about people setting off pyrotechnics near a four-foot-tall field of dry grass (in California, of all places), I was reminded of this scene from Backdraft.

"So you decided to punch out a window for ventilation. Was that before or after you noticed you were standing in a lake of gasoline?"

Rant: My foot won't stop wriggling around. Its moving by itself. I think maybe I need an exorcist.

I managed to keep down half a sandwich today! It had baba ghanouj, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and cheddar cheese on it. In other words, it should have immediately exacerbated my issues. But it didn't.

On that note, I still can't eat any meat and I still can't eat any decent amount of food. This started on August 8th so it's been a month now of never going above 500 calories in a day. Weight loss of 37 pounds in that time, but I'm still in the 240s, so it's fine. I can probably do this for another month if necessary, but hopefully it won't come to that. Phone appointment on the 11th!

And that doesn't take into account Covid, the ensuing Brext catastrophe and so on. Sorry to hear that. :(

It is usually better to have a job while you look for the next one.

I managed to lose excess weight the same way (although from a less dangerous starting position). It was awful.

My cat decided to jump on my bed while leaking a little bit of diarrhea. Lovely.

These are physical, tangible game pieces? If so, try eBay. You might get lucky (it's where I got some Monopoly tokens I hadn't seen before, and Clue tokens that actually resemble the characters).

Yeah, they are physical pieces. And they are available on eBay, but I'm waiting a bit to see what kind of response I get from Games Workshop. I'd prefer to buy from them because I believe in supporting the company that makes the stuff so they actually continue making it. The only time I go elsewhere is for stuff I need that Games Workshop has discontinued.

EDIT: I got a response from them. They said they pulled the Necron Warriors because they are making a new version of them that will be released shortly. I suspected that might be the case, but I wasn't sure.

I sympathize. Having just enough money to go by for a few months, if no new work is done to secure new income, really is horrible.

Elevator in my office building is out. For a week. And I'm on the 5th floor. #firstworldproblems #everydayislegday

It's not really that bad. A couple of people in my office have it worse. There's one person who's ~60, smokes, and is very overweight. This morning, they came in the front door and didn't even make it to their own office, they just collapsed into the guest's chair by my desk and sat there huffing a puffing for about 10 minutes. And the two 70+ guys have been working from home since March anyway.

It's not a first-world problem for a disabled person.

I get emails from an industry blog. These are usually run by long-time veterans who have been in the business for many decades. That's the good part.

The bad part is that they regularly post about scams, and their advice is peak out-of-touch Boomer about technology. The latest email told everyone, if they received an email from a particular scammer, to change their email password and get new anti-virus software. Because they received an email. Not because they clicked a link or provided any information. Simply because there was an email in their inbox.

And people undoubtedly follow this advice every time. I can't imagine how many times these people change their passwords and install new anti-virus software every year. I wonder when I'll read that you should double-wrap and install a duo of Norton and Kaspersky.
