My gf's department at work got a new manager...fresh out of the Army. I was concerned, because I know her (obviously) and also know a couple of guys from her department and also know the former manager, and I was sort of picturing how @Commodore would fit in that position...turns out that the new guy is a pretty good dude, although she has laughed at him a few times when he said things that were word for word things I had said he was likely to say.

I dunno about his home, but my gf has been surprised at how personable the guy is. I expected more of an officer 'don't fraternize with the troops' style. Sort of like how Commodore proudly tells us he treats the mere humans he encounters.

How's that work for lunch?

Well I usually eat lunch with people I know or in my office since I frequently have to work through lunch.

Also the above is how I deal with random strangers who try to strike up a conversation when I'm out and about. I handle things differently at work. At work I just speak to them in that cold, extremely professional tone in the hopes that they understand I am only talking to them as a professional courtesy and to avoid conflict in the workplace.

And to elaborate further on why I act this way towards strangers: I do it because when I'm not in a conversation with someone else, I'm usually conducting some kind of business or other activity that is personally important to me. So for some rando to just start talking to me while I'm trying to do something that I actually care about is extremely rude in my mind. I want to ask them "What makes you think you are so special or important that I should have to stop what I'm doing to be your personal entertainment?"

That would be conversation related to the business at hand though, which I said I don't mind. It's the out of nowhere conversations I have a problem with. For example, if I were dealing with the cashier and the person behind me tried to start up a conversation (which has happened before) I would have a problem with that.

I'm not in the market for new friends. In any case, I make my friends through the business I conduct. For example, when I interviewed for the last job I had it turned out the guy interviewing me was in the same brigade as me in the Army, just in a different company. We even deployed at the same time. As you can imagine, an instant friendship was born.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if a thousand posts suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly deleted. I fear something terrible has happened.

I mean if these posts are considered spam, might as well lean into it.
