Co-optation ensures there is a common culture. And for some kind of jobs, placing job offerings and not invitation looks sketchy instead. In the indie gaming business, small development groups may prefer to co-opt people instead of placing openings. I can know because I have done so myself. Placing openings generally looks utterly helpless if you aren't established.
I didn't know that. The only experience I have with companies that "recruit" people is a company called Vector, which is a pyramid scheme that you have to sell your soul to work for. Thankfully I researched so I didn't take the job, but they needed you to "recruit" your friends so that they could scam more people.
