Random Rants LXIV: Who's Acting Like a Child Now?

Thanks, I checked it out and joined the site. Although I'm not a fast writer, I finished a novel yesterday which I started some time in January. My last novel came out in early 2015, so I feel like I have actually accomplished something. I still want to finish another story till end of this year.

By the way, if it's not a secret, is there any place I can read your NaNoWriMo results?
I'm not sure what you mean by reading my results. If you mean my daily word count, I've been posting it in the "Planet Tales" forum at Alpha Centauri 2 forum (follow the bottom link in my sig). Since I'm using a different name there than I do here and at AC2, I'd prefer not to link to my NaNoWriMo page.

My Day 9 tally stands at 4835 words.

If you mean my actual writing, it's not posted anywhere - yet. While I met my word count goal and quite a bit over, back in April, I didn't get anywhere near the end of the story. That's still a work-in-progress.

If internet app doesn't lie, NaNoWriMo wants me to write 30000 words in a month. That's 88 pages in 12 Arial font. Or 3 pages in a day rounded up. Sounds a lot to me, considering a novel can be as short as 150 pages. Edit - wiki says anything over 40000 words is considered a novel.
The April and July competitions are "Camp" events, which means that you are allowed to choose your own word-count goal. The minimum is 10,000 words. It's the November event that requires 50,000 words for a win.

A lesson people here at CFC could really heed. I wasn't always this way here. In fact, I used to be one of the more pleasant members here. I stopped being pleasant though once I realized that CFC was nothing more than a pack mentality that attacks and ridicules anyone who doesn't agree 100% with the majority opinion. This community has become nastier over the years since I've joined.

I mean, even when I've tried to reign it in and not be so confrontational with people here they still get nasty with me. Apparently "forgive and forget" isn't a very popular concept around here...
If that's how you feel about CFC, I suggest dropping in on TrekBBS. I got on some people's <you-know-what> list back in 2009 when I stated that I do not like the Abrams version of Star Trek. Since my opinion of that hasn't changed over the years, these people have continued to carry that grudge... and drag it with them throughout the site, even into the non-Star Trek areas. It can get quite personal, and quite vicious.

Yea, I meant your actual writing. I'm not sure if I understand right, but do you only write stuff related to sci-fi fanfiction or something set in our current universe as well?

I have nothing against sci-fi, it is just that to me, I find it harder placing my stories in real world settings, because I'm not a historian, but I want my stories to be historically and socially accurate as possible.

In sci-fi and fantasy stories you can build your own everything and readers can hate it or love it, but they can't complain that there are trains in a story set in 17th century when steam engines weren't invited yet, for example.

I started a puzzle and it frustrated me that the puzzle's edges don't match the edges of the picture on the box

the box picture is "larger", so more is pictured that what the puzzle extends to.

Step 1: lawsuit
Step 2: ¿?????
Step 3: profit!

The material from this year's NaNoWriMo events can't be posted on CFC, because of the autocensor rules (yes, some of the characters swear - quite a bit, in a couple of cases; it's necessary, to be true to the source material).

My Fighting Fantasy fanfic could be posted here, if it were anywhere close to being finished and properly edited. I know I'm going to need help with writing some of the fight scenes, as even during my 12 years in the Society for Creative Anachronism, I didn't have a lot to do with the fighters.

Could we please take this conversation to the NaNoWriMo thread in A&E? I'd like to discuss this further, but not in a thread that's going to disappear in a relatively short time.

I'm spending money I should be saving on things I don't really need.

Dude, you only have one life. Why slave away without having any fun for the vast majority of it, only to be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor for the last few short years of your life? Enjoy yourself and spend away I say!

I really want a crazy hi-def monitor right now but I don't get paid until the end of the week

You didn't happen to be the financial advisor to Greece in the noughties, did you?!

But yeah I'm all for living in the present. And I get the things I really want, savings be damned. Although if I'm to afford to buy an apartment or house at some point down the line, I need to be a little fiscally constraint. Which I don't really mind. I don't see how an extravagant lifestyle would make me any happier.

How many thousands of Euros did it cost to have your eyes lasered? (How's that going, incidentally?)

Bah, that was about 3000 Euros. And a pretty hefty expense in my economical situation. Though I'm really glad I did it. Not having to deal with contacts/glasses any more is pretty great.

And it's going good. All soreness is completely gone, that only lasted a few days. Though sharpness wise it's still some way off. I have to browse CFC with 150% zoom with my head pretty close up to the screen. But it's improving slowly and steadily. Within a couple of months it should be back what it was with glasses. Hopefully.

Maybe get some cheap supermarket reading glasses until it clears up?

Unfortunately that won't help a bit. You see the problem now isn't that the refraction of light is misaligned with the retina. Which can be adjusted with a lense to get the correct focus point. But rather that the eyes and more importantly the brain isn't used to the new lense shape, even though the refraction is now correct. And that usually takes a few months for the body to completely work out. Typical slow and useless meatbag bodies, eh? But them's the breaks.

Hmm...might save some time if you swap out the brain, too.

Is there that much profanity?

Also, if it needs editing, think of how it would look if the cursing was replaced with <deleted>. In some cases, it has actually improved the text.
I hate everything but I'm too lazy to argue or think

what do I do
Drink!

Probably one of my pettiest rants in a while, but the RPG group I'm part is choosing a new campaign and I don't think any of my ideas will get picked. Cyberpunk, Avernum , or the Dark Ages. I was excited for the Dark Ages - proud Romans trying to hold together a dying Empire, fierce Huns raiding the borders, and rebels trying to set up their own kingdoms to survive the coming storm.
