I think the forum might benefit from some sort of random ignore function. People who jump into what to them is a half conversation because they have someone on ignore are almost always inadvertently hilarious. If every day everyone was just randomly assigned someone to ignore for the day imagine how many sidesplitting threads we would have!

And now one of my cats has for some reason decided that he will NEVER again use a litter box. He won't even go near it, preferring to use carpets instead.

Okay, several questions come to mind.

1. Male cat, at the age when males should already have been neutered. Has he?

2. Given what you say about the litter box, you should probably invest in a bigger one, and maybe a different style. Some cats have definite likes and dislikes about litter boxes. I've had to switch styles more than once before finding out what my cat is comfortable with and that I can handle.

3. Also consider the brand of cat litter. If the cat doesn't like it, he won't use it.

4. Check the cat's feet. Are there any problems that would make him reluctant to step into a tub of cat litter (ie. scratches or other abrasions)?

5. You might need to take the cat to the vet to figure out of there's anything wrong. If a cat has trouble getting into the litter box because it hurts (ie. they have to climb or jump through a hole), they're not going to do it.
