Keep lookin' and keep writin'. I know an artist who took the time to hone his craft and while he was hungry for ten year, ten year later he is never without a paid commission.
I know, but writing is my only ticket out of this place and really the only thing I can do without hating everyone at the same time. Plus I'm relatively physically disabled so the typical trades occupations in my area are a no-no for me. Any decision regarding my writing has to come under some pretty heavy deliberation and scrutiny by myself to make sure it's the right move, like me cancelling a $500 contract last week. It was web content for four websites, and again I come around to the "but my portfolio..." issue, but being paid $2.90 a page is... well.. a rip-off.
I'm aware of the mentality that you have to do things you don't like in order to move forward, but that mentality really creeps me out with how okay everyone is with that, and it is pretty much my goal to never succumb to that no matter the difficulty of it. I mean, in my eyes $10 an article is already below market value, but it's at least a "livable" wage if I were to, say, write nine articles a day. Unfortunately, there are many people who pay $3 an article or are willing to pay $6 for the first 10, but then gradually go down because apparently working with someone for a long time means your work is worth less. Really agitating.
Freelancing can be both vividly gratifying or absurdly disappointing.
