Random Raves ΜΔ: Crate Expectations

I wouldn't be so despondent. If it's strictly hearing loss there's hearing aids (I don't know how affordable they are in Canada) available; if it's an effect of parkinson's you can adjust the medication… if it's the third option (an inability to process sounds or words due to separate causes) well, I cannot speak about that one because I don't know anybody who has (had) it.

It's interesting as a lot of people with this disorder have really good hearing. They can distinguish between different sounds, can often hear more frequencies, can often hear things sooner than others, etc. But once you start layering sounds, the ability to parse language goes kaput.

That would make more sense in my case, really. When I did a blind ABX text a while ago I was able to differentiate 320kbps MP3s and FLACs with something like 85% accuracy. But when it comes to making out the words, it's like "wait, is he talking about potatoes?"

:scan: Get tested for both then. It might also be a side effect of autism now that I think of it.

What on earth did you need that much vitamin c for?

It's one of the supplements I was taking every day on the trail. While the science seems a bit unclear on the subject, people say that it helps with high altitude hiking. So every morning I would take an emergen-c packet, rip it open, and mix it with 1L of water, which I would then drink throughout that day's hike. My other 1L water bottle was pure water, but I got bored of that emergen-c taste rather quickly. My friends urged me to just drink my emergen-c with less water each morning instead, which is what one of them was supposedly doing.

So.. I tried that. One morning I downed the whole packet all in one go. And off we went, but it wasn't an hour into the hike when I started feeling rumblings in my stomach..

So that's how that story begins.. I was taking a bunch of stuff every morning and on the trail.. I had high blood pressure meds I needed to take every morning, 1 aspirin to help out my heart, high altitude med (diamox), I was taking a multivitamin, the vitamin-C already mentioned, I had isotonic powder in capsules that had something else in it that was supposed to give you a bit of a boost (but also help against cramps) - took 3-5 of these a day, throat lozenges were important as at those altitudes you cough a lot, I had a couple packs of energy cheweables.. On top of that I had in my first kit painkillers, cold medicine, stoppers, goers, neosporin, zantac, and other assorted first aid stuff like moleskin, bandaids, gauze pads, etc. On top of that I would regularly drink ginger tea and eat garlic soup, as those two supposedly help with high altitudes as well.

I would say what I brought was more or less the minimum you should for this hike. One guy I was talking to while I was still planning brought a lot more than that even. He was hiking with his wife, and he heard of people getting stomach infections on the trail.. which is rare but can happen (usually if you eat meat i think, which we avoided).. there's no hospitals around so it would mean helicopter evac.. so this guy brought with him all these antibiotics for all sorts of situations. IMO overkill, but.. yeah, on this hike your first aid kit better be packed full.

My morning route was a bit of a process. I had to remember all the meds to take. It was super cold, the walls are not insulated at all.. change into hiking clothes.. pack everything up for the porter to carry.. make sure I have all the stuff I need for that day's hike in my daypack.. Was easy to miss a step, since I was going so fast.. had to squeeze breakfast in there too, and usually have everything packed up before that, so the porter could start hiking before us

No coca leaves, warpus?

Well, yes, but still. I don't know how legal they are in Asia though.

I doubt you could even find it there. A lot of those countries don't play around with drugs and their precursors and chewing coca leaves is not an ingrained cultural trait anywhere outside the Andes/South America that I'm aware of.

In the SE Asian Muslim countries e.g. Malaysia you can get executed, but India/Nepal might be slightly different. I personally wouldn't risk it, just in case.

Made myself chicken tikka masala tonight, and plenty of it, so I'll be able to reheat it over the next few days when we get our -60F temperatures here in this frigid wasteland of a state.

Got an order of interesting-looking books coming in after finding $50 in unspent gift cards, and a tentative casual date this weekend.
This reminds me of a rant-
I left my book on a bench yesterday and now it's gone.

Saw the new Dragon Ball movie; I really enjoyed it and it was absolutely fantastic what they did with the new Broly in particular. I felt so bad for him the entire film and he quickly became one of my favorite characters in the entire series. Much better than the living meme the non-canon version was.

They gave us early dismissal (two hours) for the snowfall on Tuesday afternoon. Nick of time stuff, much appreciated; my commute sucked rather less than it would have if I'd gotten on the road in the middle of the snow.

They then decided to cancel school on Wednesday and Thursday, largely because of...the cold? I guess? Also, possibly, icy roads? I dunno the exact logic, but I'm okay with it. They build those snow days into the schedule for a damn reason.

After NaNoWriMo ended in November, I decided to keep going on my story. I set a goal of 30,000 words from December 1 to January 31 (the equivalent of doing two back-to-back Camp NaNoWriMo events where the required word count is smaller).

I've just completed that goal... with a word count of 35,602.

This doesn't count as a NaNoWriMo win since it's not part of an official event. It counts as a personal win, however, since I wasn't sure that I could manage to keep writing every day after just finishing one of the most stressful Novembers ever.

The story itself is far from done, though. I'm going to keep on, but without the stress of a daily word count minimum (eye surgery coming up soon, so I really can't manage much writing now, at least on pages with a white background).
