If you actively try to listen to the white noise it will fade to background much faster. Your mind will get bored and reject it.

Yeah, I have been practicing this skill. My mind still very much desires absolute quietness as background noise. With exceptions I am trying to exploit for the purpose of white noise machine usage

Was able to fall asleep to the sound of a river last night. Tonight I am setting it to a louder volume. The only problem is that at times it makes me wonder whether it's a good idea on the account on actual water sounding exactly the same, so if my bedroom was getting wet for some reason, my mind would be rejecting the noise and I could die or at least get wet.. so I have to figure out how to train my mind to not every once in a while say "HEY BY THE WAY THAT SOUNDS LIKE WATER, WE SHOULD CHECK IT OUT"

I think London is safe from the threat of tsunami. :mischief:

You do?

Scientists from Durham University have discovered such landslides near the country’s coast are happening far more often than first thought.

In the last 20,000 years, there have been six huge land movements north of Britain.

A tsunami wave around 20 metres high hit Shetland around 8,200 years ago, caused by the massive Storegga landslide, which saw a chunk of sediment the size of Scotland break away from the sea bed and roll downhill.

Cornwall was also hit by a 10ft tsunami in 1755, after an earthquake in Portugal.

I mean, they're not common by any means, but certainly possible.

And I have heard (can't remember where) that some geological event round Madeira (it's on the mid-Atlantic volcanic ridge) could trigger a massive one up the English Channel.

My house has gotten flooded twice in the last 7 years. Mind you not due to tsunami but rather frozen pipes and faulty toilet parts. But either way I am now a bit paranoid about my house getting flooded again

It's the other London, warpus. The one with the Queen and all that.

You operate in a higher strata of white noise machines than I did. Flowing rivers, wind in the leaves, breaking waves... In prison I would just tuck in my ear buds and set my radio to no station.

So I take it you're not on a flood plain or that close to a river? It's getting into the time of year when you shouldn't need to worry about frozen pipes. If you're worried about the plumbing, I wouldn't worry that it would sound like a river.

Ocean waves can be relaxing. I never worried I'd mistake that for the real thing, given that it's a two-day drive to the nearest ocean. Thunderstorms are relaxing.

Just don't read Mid-Flinx and then put on a tape of jungle sounds. It's definitely not relaxing. :hide:

I do get why you would worry in general, though. There are some days when I think I should put my bookshelves up on stilts (the ones in the room next to the bathroom).

Nah I'm not close to a flood plain, and my house is actually on a hill, so I don't have to worry about the basement flooding during rain too much (all the water flows downhill instead of tunneling down into the basement or whatever).

Still though, it's already happened twice, it was a huge hassle, cost me deductibles and higher rates for 2-3 years after the fact (each time).. Both times it was unexpected. I'm now triggered by water sounds a bit.. I guess

I've never been to prison before, but I have watched OZ

Is atheism a concept or lifestyle choice that attempts to exclude God from daily life?

If it is a concept, then it is just in opposition to the concept of God. If it is a lifestyle choice then, it is just boycotting the reality of God. Religion may or may not have a handle on who or what God is, any more than an atheist declaring there is no God. In attempting to define God, would seem to be the only simmularity between religion and atheism. God really has nothing to do with how humans attempt to define any religion.

It would seem to me that both religion and atheism are just lifestyle choices. Neither have originated any concepts on the matter. Humans have always argued, they have experienced God, while others claim God does not exist.

An atheist that builds their life around the lack of belief in God is likely an anti-theist, something that is different than simply being atheist.

Given that the God Concept thread was recently locked, I don't think it terribly wise to linger on this line of enquiry.

Am I the only one who sees a dick?

Some chefs are much like software developers:
  • they are fun driven, using unsuitable components and methods because they're more fun and trendy.
  • they are occasionally résumé driven, using unsuitable components and methods so that they can claim experience with those.
  • they want to rewrite code(recipes) that has been working perfectly well for the customer for a long time, only for the reason that it's not fresh or trendy enough.
  • if there's a bug in the product, they have no sense of shame or failure. Instead the customer "should help them improve by providing feedback".

It is the longest day of the year here. It is hard to fall asleep for night owls due to light appearing at nearly 3 am. I wish I had more scientific information why and how days getting shorter again affects us.

I feel you. Try a sun that doesn't set at all, though. :cringe:

Today I put up blackout curtains in my room. Game change

It's the solstice tomorrow (i.e. the 21st) in the UK.
