I finally googled whether it's "avoid to" or "avoid + gerund", and it's, of course, the latter. That wasn't even hard to figure out. So very often I stop while typing and wonder which form is correct, just to go with what feels right - I should really just look up the rules much more often, then my English skills would surely improve rapidly.

I know it's flag season in Germany, but one of my Italian neighbors has an Italian flag and they didn't even qualify.

Failure to qualify does not require abandonment by fans, especially when talking about a national team. Would you expect someone flying their German flag to take it down if the German team gets eliminated?

Well... at least I'd not expect anyone to put any up if we didn't qualify.
And yeah, people would probably take them down, if the team got eliminated (at least that's what I think...).

I dunno. I see Raider flags, jerseys, tattoos...and the Raiders have sucked for over a decade. I see Laker flags and jerseys by the hundreds, and they've sucked for going on a decade. It doesn't seem unreasonable to think people would be displaying their support at this time, even for teams that didn't qualify or have stopped advancing.

Sometimes I think that the best way to learn English is to avoid contact with native speakers, and other times I think the exact opposite.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. What do you suggest I do with Maddy, then? I've had her since she was less than 2 months old. Her 11th birthday is in less than two weeks (no, I'm not expecting a birthday thread for her since she's not a member here... but if the cat-friendly folk want to extend a greeting or two, I certainly won't turn my nose up at it ).

I'm not going to pretend like I have a good plan for what to do with the world's pet population, but I still think people shouldn't get them

I'm not terribly interested in discussing to be entierly honest, like this isn't the hill I want to die on, to to say

but:

I'm kinda concerned especially about cat's since they're an invasive species
supposedly this is the range of wildcats, but that might already be affected by human activity (especially since they follow borders some places):

So I guess what I want is to get all the cats to these places, or alternatively like sterilizing them
not really practical or humane

humans are an invasive species too...

I guess there's no solution to the problems
that's kind of my life philosophy

I'm having a hard time trying to finish this post up without sounding self-pitying
