Random Thoughts 3: A Little Bit of This, and a Little Bit of That...

Keep this up and we'll have Justin Bieber, Celine Dion and Nickelback join up into a supergroup and violate your ears and mind through your radios and television sets!
Eh, I'll take them in exchange for Prime Minister Sweater-Model.

So a "United Provinces of America" then?:mischief:

It's ridiculous to say that I don't "acknowledge" the reality that people incorrectly call Canadians "Americans." Of course it's reality, because there are arguments that come up on this forum like the one I'm currently in. That's reality, but it doesn't mean I have to like or accept it, or that I'm not going to call people out for incorrectly referring to Canadians as "Americans."

Why is it incorrect? If all literature says you're wrong, why are you right?

It's the Yanks fault for not using any imagination when naming their country!

Really, you had time this afternoon to read all the literature in the world, and all of it says I'm wrong?

I'm impressed, Synsensa. I had no idea you were such a speed reader.

Re-read the Wikipedia quote in my post. I'm not wrong.

Technically, nor is is anyone else using their country's conception of what "Asian" or "American" means.

You had to dig into the footnotes to find one sentence that doesn't even support your position (that Canada cannot be considered or called American).

This isn't even clever. You're telling me to re-read your zinger of a quote when the very quote you're telling me to read then goes on to clearly say that the Canadian Oxford Dictionary lists the Americas as a valid definition.

That's not what the bolded part says:
Marjorie Fee and Janice MacAlpine, Oxford Guide to Canadian English Usage (2008) page 36 says "In Canada, American is used almost exclusively in reference to the United States and its citizens."
Synsensa, did British Columbia secede from Canada since the last update on CBC.ca?

Did Alberta?

No?

Then stop with the baiting.

Look, let's go back. Simplify.

The entire point of contention is a simple matter of connotation versus denotation, or presciptivism vs descriptivism.

"Asian" not only describes geography, but also ethnicity. Ethnicity is, by an incredibly vast margin, the more commonly meant use of the word in everyday conversation. Everybody with any knowledge whatsoever knows that Afghanistan is in the Asian continent. That doesn't make afghanis of asian ethnicity, just like a white south african is not of African ethnicity.

If you followed that, I think we're done here and the matter is cleared up?

Do you understand what "bolded" means? It's the part of the post that's darker than the rest, and therefore the ONLY part of the post I consider relevant. I have stated this before.

I was speaking of geography, not ethnicity. There are many ethnicities present in the many countries that are located on the continent of Asia.

Moderator Action: Before the argument gets even more heated, why don't we all just take a pause and go to a neutral corner before I start handing out infractions? Better yet, why don't we move on to another topic?

Just a suggestion.

Does anyone else here have some favorite legal mood altering substances that aren't really drugs ?
No illegal substances, just food.
I really like a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in my morning tea. Gives you a really nice adrenalin rush.

If we consider intent, that is true. There are no legal defenses or mitigating factors for intercourse without consent, as opposed to ending someone's life.

But if there are defences and mitigating factors for ending someone's life, then it's not murder right?

Rhodiola rosea, but it does not have an immediate effect. Makes you more willing to do things and takes the edge off of over-stimulation.
