Random Thoughts IV: the Abyss Gazes Back

Thinking of becoming a police officer. I'm getting sick and tired of working corporate jobs and at this point in my life it's too late to learn a whole new career and my current skill set means police officer is probably my best option. Well, either that or go off and be a mercenary somewhere, but that ain't happening. Plus, police officers get paid pretty well and they get a very good retirement plan.

I was a little worried that I wouldn't meet the physical standards though on account of my knee injury from the Army and the subsequent loss of physical fitness that has stemmed from that. However, I looked up the physical fitness requirements for my local police department and tested myself. I only missed the standard on the push-ups by 3, so that should be easy to overcome. I was actually surprised at the standards for physical fitness. I thought they would be higher.

They seem to get steeper as you work up from local to county and state, but I guess it's all relative. For some relatively quiet small towns it doesn't make much sense to require a ton. They mostly do traffic, keep an eye out for teens that tend to be out and about, fireworks, lost pets, that sort of stuff. Community involvement. For that sort of thing usually an obese older guy who knows everybody is more roundly useful than a pitbull ready to go. They're going to call county for backup if anything crazy happens anyhow.

Hope your job hunt/workouts go well.

Poorly fitting business clothes tells folks that your are new to the culture and don't have any of the appropriate attire. It looks like you just pieced something together to play the part.

Psch. New money scoundrels. Ruffians, the lot.

Of course nobody focuses on these posts, what I say is only ever evaluated when I make a post that's non-constructive. :)
!!!!
When next we meet I hope to see you in full sporran.
I'm not sure whether you really know what that means or not.

I think you have more pressing issues to solve than your job, from what you've posted here.

They're also the best argument I've ever found against the existence of "the patriarchy": why would the dominant gender submit itself to walking around with a noose on its neck?

Huh? Why?

The Poster (formerly known as Gori) wantz to know!

Typical example of a handicap indicator. Sometimes males of a species will flaunt traits that have only disadvantages to signal to females that they're strong, smart and healthy enough to overcome the handicap.
Several bird species have long, colorful tails. The tails do nothing, are cumbersome and make it easier for predators to see the bird, but females are attracted to large and colorful tails because the male manages to thrive despite it.

That's not nonsense I just made up.

Peacocks are an example of this.

Yep, and possibly drug and alcohol consumption in himans to a lesser extend.

"Look, I'm so good that I can afford to sometimes deliberately take poison to make myself stupid and clumsy."

Maybe, but certainly smoking cigarettes in the US isn't.

Seems like my drawing tablet has decided that three years were enough of a life span. To be honest, I'd probably consider suicide as well if I had gone through as much abuse as that tablet, but it's still a bummer. With no money to get a new one (or at least not enough money saved up that I'll willing to spend it on such a luxury product), I'll have to go back to my old drawing tablet, the one without a built-in monitor.

On the other hand, that tablet was annoying me anyway. Constant driver issues, then it decided to stop recognizing its own pen for no reason at least once every two hours or so (which meant having to disconnect the tablet from my pc, reconnect it and hope that it works then). And the very noticeable parallaxing on that tablet was a constant problem, too.

I guess I'll start saving some extra money and then buy a proper current-generation wacom again.

Or maybe I'll just spend all my money to buy a new tablet tomorrow, because why be a responsible person when you can have fun instead!

I read a book written in the 1980s where the main character's therapist offers her a cigarette in a public building. She was 17. I guess times were different then.

Yes they were.

Large scale consumption of sunlight, face to face interaction, and carcinogenic anti-depressants was more common, among other things.

I guess times were different then.

It's one of the most striking sea-changes that The Poster (formerly known as Gori) has observed in his lifetime.

That and the (relative) destigmatization of homosexuality.

Have to admit, 3 1/2 years in and it's more tempting than it's been in a long time. It's a useful marker of class, anymore.

I find that books actually written during a certain decade feel a lot more authentic than books that were written afterwards that take place during that decade.

Uh, what is? Reading, smoking or homosexuality?

An uninformed electorate is corrosive to democracy.

The 1980s were the last decade before the internet started taking over everyone's lives. If I wanted to discuss my favorite TV shows with someone and couldn't do it face to face, I had to do it either over the phone or by writing a letter. A snailmail letter, that might take days or weeks to reach the recipient.

Something I like to do when reading older books is keep a tally of how many problems or conflicts could be solved in a few minutes if everyone had a cell phone.

Word on the street is, the reason Trump doesn't trust statistics is that they're written in Arabic Numerals.

I've seen in my office, a lot of the men, even executives, don't seem to be wearing ties much any more and they leave their top button undone.

Top button undone no tie but with a jacket is a look that has gotten popular. Personally, if I don't have the tie on I'm ditching the jacket as well, but I'm not big on current style.
