Things I could not distinguish as a kid (at a time when the POTUS came from one of these, I still do not know which):
- Arkansas and Arrakis
Seriously? :dubious:

Mind you, every time I want to mention the Fort McMurray fire that happened 5 years ago, I have to look up the spelling. It's confusing because the nickname for that place is "Fort Mac".

100% serious that I did not know how Arkansas could be pronounced other than Arrakis. I was very into Dune, and had never heard Arkansas spoken. I may have a touch of dyslexia, and to me Arkansas looked like it should be pronounced Arrakis.

I am not serious about thinking Bill Clinton is a Fremen.

Harkonnen, then? :mischief:

I don't know much about how non-Canadians perceived him other than what we heard on the news about the various scandals; I do know that he got along reasonably well with our Prime Minister at the time.

(And speaking of "Arkansas", how on Earth or any other planet is that last "s" pronounced like a "w"?)

The one with the rulers with the god complex and the militaristic fascination.

choxorn's right. Don't you watch Tremors, Valka? Best documentary on the subject.

The fact that there are sandworms in Nevada does not mean there are sandworms in Arkansas.

Arkansas is probably at one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon on the Bacon scale.

I vaguely recall hearing the title and a brief description. I opted not to watch.

As for sandworms and Arrakis... I get into occasional long conversations/arguments on a Dune YouTube channel and a thread over on TrekBBS. Funny how people start asking a lot of questions when they find out you have a copy of the Dune Encyclopedia, used to run a Dune forum, and corresponded with KJA and Frank Herbert's grandson.

It is pretty "interesting" that it took Goedel to bother to notice that replacing a group of (non number) symbols with a group of symbols that are numbers, doesn't alter the code while it adds another realm of (moreover known) rules of going from one group of symbols (now numbers) to another.
It is also "interesting" that it took something like the Principia Mathematica to make Goedel regard this option as meaningful (that system was the first to actually bother to be strong enough to express all basic functions of positive integers).

Interest all around.

On the positive side, despite being as lazy as always, I actually understand Goedel's work now.

^That sounds interesting, but what works are you discussing? I suppose the Principia Mathematica are by Newton.

It's the other Principia: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/principia-mathematica/

Which is a formal logic system created by Russell (and friend) in an attempt to formalize the math of natural numbers, which itself aimed to remove ambiguity from which proofs are actually independent of language and other intuition and which aren't.
It's basically a system of symbols which have set rules from which you create theorems, starting from a few axioms. It isn't logical to try to prove stuff using it, unless you have reason to believe other proofs for something may be ambiguous - otherwise... it takes a page to even prove that 1+1=2.
It is, however, very important in that it led to Goedel, who in turn led to Turing and computer stuff. Also (afaik - not there yet at all) it may be usable (with tied math) to prove some stuff which already seems impossible to prove by other methods.

Goedel's work was about conclusively showing that no such system can be both consistent (that is: only produce truth) and complete (that is be able to present all truth), since Goedel constructed a way to show that the system has inherent (at the very least) double meanings which lead to a sentence such as "This is not a theorem of this system" (written in code; this is just the meaning in english) ending up being a proven theorem of the system, thus making the system inconsistent.

Today 9 members joined, which are apparently from Firaxis.
New Civ games are roughly released every 5 years.
Civ 6 was released in 2016.
I predict something
Wrong thread?

Should I have put it into the prediction thread :D?
I think I counted 28 or so Firaxis accounts.

@FXS_The_JJ man, not sure if I like your username :p.
@FXS_JJ is not much better ^^.
@Birdjaguar, I think you might want to verify these accounts. One of them claims to be 104 years old.

Checked them and started a conversation with you. Thanks.
