Random Thoughts XI: Listen to the Whispers

A random thought for @Valka D'Ur and one for the K-man.

I don't think so, because in this case the "cave" is also anthropic. Prior to Plato, there was the view (by the elean philosophers, such as Parmenides and Zeno) that while a "real" world may exist, it would not be tied to our world. So in that model you would have a real cave, but the human cave wouldn't be tied to it. In Plato's model, by contrast, the "real" world is (albeit infinitesimally) tied to our world. The difference is, obviously, enormous.

I personally think it is pretty strange to try to examine if math is cosmic (more than human/human-similar), since even if it is only human it still won't be depleted nor fully understood. It is a nice angle on the ability to create real AI, though, since if math is only human, but still never fully to be known (even by humans with 3000 IQ etc), then no AI can be programmed with it (it can still generate it out of some bio matter, like humans do). Maybe for math to be actually cosmic it wouldn't even be enough that all intelligent organisms are built from the same elementary particles and arrangements (which is already assuming the divisions of particles end at some point, which they may well not do), since for all we know the emergence of mathematical thinking may be dependent on far more localized parameters than that.

By the way, I was happy to read by Conway (who is "of famous") a view I always had and even mentioned a number of times in CFC OT, but always was met with non-positive comments. Namely that it is quite suspicious that humans sense stuff in 3d, and that this may mean that 3d itself is not formed as an object but as a result of procedures that have nothing to do with dimensions. In other words that "3d" may just be human-sensespeak for "way of viewing", and have nothing to do with what it is being picked up as (and also, which is a different point, nothing to do with what it is analyzed as).
I think that, given that mathematics is a science that is used to measure, by necessity, if we find new things to measure, e.g. when we found out about spherical geometry, or later on about cosmology, space bent by gravity and so on, then we will find, or develop, new mathematics.

Regarding eyesight, yes, it is actually the result of a mental process. Remember that the brain is constantly rearranging the information from the eyes, which is perceived upside-down.

I guess that would be how a lot of cats would react, but considering that books are not considered essential services, I would be very surprised if any bookstore in Red Deer that isn't Chapters (much of their business is via mail order) is still in business.

I was randomly thinking that the hangover from ignorance may never end.
At this rate I will never achieve anything notable :)
How 'notable' do you want to be?

Some idiot on the CBC news site mocked me yesterday for not being a famous artist (in the acting/singing sense). I told him it's a good thing that I don't care about that (true; in all the years I worked in musical theatre, I went in front of the audience as a performer exactly twice - the second time only because my grandmother was in the audience and would have been Extremely Upset otherwise).

My random thought for the day is this: Will I be getting a phone call or email from StatsCan, chastising me for one of my responses to the short-form census I just did?

For one thing, it's late (I ventured down to the mailbox for the first time in over a month, not having stuck my nose out the door in nearly a month). I had no idea it was even there, let alone that I missed the deadline by almost a week.

For two things, there was a question about languages spoken in the home. Of course the primary language here is English. Then they wanted to know about French, but didn't have the right combination of boxes to tick, as in I took it for many years during elementary grades through college, I can carry on a simple conversation (use it or lose it; the last time I spoke French to anyone was in 2004, when reading one of the information signs at Lake Minnewanka to a friend who wanted to know what it said), can read it well enough not to freak out in a grocery store if the French side of the can or box is turned out.

They wanted to know about other languages that were not French or English. Since I'm sitting here around 5 am, feeling in a bit of a snarky mood, I decided to write down Domestic House Cat as one of the languages I speak.

I wonder if they'll take it as a joke or if I'll get a "visit" as an acquaintance did many years ago when he listed "Jedi" as his religion (my census form didn't ask about religion).

I would be willing to bet a significant sum of money on "No, they will not contact you about that", but I know nothing.

The bad trend to use very strong words in the title of a video, really comes across as annoying when the video is about something serious :)

What's next? Collatz DESTROYS fibonnaci by being of undecidable length for each integer?

Having someone in the preview pic always looking puzzled/focused etc also is grating.

Do not knock clickbait, it really works. I assume people have got used enough to it these days that it does not grate, but I do occasionally get called out for it here.

If I was actually worried about it, I wouldn't have done it. They must get all kinds of joke answers every census. At least this time I didn't get the long form, as happened last time. That's the one where they ask about religion and how many rooms you have in your home and how old the home is (had to ask the building manager about that since I have no idea, and when she said she didn't know, I asked her to make a guess because I had 15 minutes left before my online census session timed out and couldn't wait).

You won't BELIEVE how well these 16 clickbait tactics work! Number 7 will SHOCK you!

Given that they make money from ads, I can't imagine many companies paying to place ads on a video that got 100 views at most.

You never stop negatively surprising me, Arak. It wouldn't be hard to actually read what videos youtube places ads on and why. If you were honestly wondering, it has placed ads on a few of my videos as well.
'100 views at most' is also unrealistic for anyone. Roughly 1000 is very normal if you have around 100 subscribers, which virtually anyone can get.

Clearly I watch different videos to you, then.

I particularly like the second one. Youtube can make money out of you even if you make no money out of it.
When ads start intruding, I leave, or at least mute the sound. Those ads will NEVER result in me buying whatever they're selling. I have ABP for YouTube, but it hasn't been working much lately. It could also be a browser issue, as I'm not using one of those that most people use.

The latest media headache going on in Canada is that the federal government is trying to pass a bill that would require a certain percentage of Canadian content on YT, Netflix, and other such streaming services that we're allowed to access. The feds swear up, down, and sideways that this would not affect individuals' posting of videos and comments... but at the last minute they changed the wording of the bill to make it possible to actually remove content they don't think meets Canadian standards. They say they want to make Canadian content more "discoverable" online - which isn't a bad thing because there's good stuff out there - but this would result in making non-Canadian material less "discoverable", or even geoblocked.

There's already a lot we can't access. SNL could have a comedy sketch about something related to Canada and we're not allowed to see those videos when they're posted on YT.

Electric cars need an aftermarket noise maker so that pets are aware of them being near and active.

As a matter of course I downvote anything I get whenever they do manage to sneak in ads.

More of the modern liberalism of the Trudeau maladministration.

Isn't that particularly sad?
