RR2- No Worker Paradise

Hi :hatsoff:

t214: Liberalism is in! I take theater as discussed... ( I am tired)
Lib -> Steel -> Nationalism (for the draft :ar15:)
We settle a new british colony... Hastings:

Spoiler :

Really? On the cows? Not 1W, converting a desert into a city center and letting us work cows + clams? I'm curious why you chose that square...

Edit: Looking again, I think 1W of the clams gives the most workable squares.
Cheers,
Raskolnikov

I thought we agreed London wasn't our long term tech city? Acad + Oxford means it is now I guess. Sorta, at least. Kinda hard to make it awesome since it'll never be improved.

Also curious on news from Caesar. It's noble, so his stack will be maybe 10 units, but we seem like a poor target. Are there other civs out there somewhere? Or is he going to get his macemen cannoned?

@pnaxighn:

Hastings is on the cows so the resource can be in the trade network (we hadn't any)... it's only purpose is to run specialists and trade routes anyways...
About London, I made an academy because London and Lisbon are for now our only good cities... and I was thinking that settled specialists are our best way to have a good city in the future so London can do that job + it is better to build Oxford now (with stone) in a good city than in 1850 in a very good city... imo we should have that up from centuries... Anyway, there are no hammers invested in Oxford, so feel free to veto that... but I truly think it's our best option right now (I explained in the report why I think Lisbon will be better to build troops -> Moai)...

About Cesar, I think he will get his macemen cannoned... I hope beacuse AIs are crappy at naval invasion, so it would be probably free XPs (too small stack + noble anyway...).
He didn't want to share maps so I don't know if he knows someone else...

Cheers :)

Hi there!

I'm still able to play civ again!

Any chance I get to play a set this weekend?

BTW what is our captain doing??

Hi Mysty.

I was up next but if you want to jump in be my guest.

Thanks :D

Would be nice if I got a short summary of our plans before I play (most likely on saturday, sunday I'll be playing SGOTM :p) as I didn't read the last posts (lots of them were quite long :p) too carefully...

Glad you are back with a working PC.

Short summary (from my perspective, without looking at the save):
War with Willem if we need more research.
Get to Rifling+Astronomy. Delay Liberalism for a while.
Draft like there is no tomorrow.
Kill everyone before tomorrow happens, to justify the previous step.

@ZPV: we got steel from liberalism last turnset...
I think a war against Justinian would be more profitable right now ( land better improved than Willem)...

Cheers

Serves me right for not looking at the save.
I'll post some more "advice" once I have. :mischief:

Alright, I buy these explanations. More cannons, more slaughter.

OK, I have now looked at the save, and here are my thoughts:

1. National Wonders.
Oxford - I am now convinced on this, it should go in London. It will be our best research city for some time, and it lets us run more scientists without Castes.
Globe - Lisbon. This will make a 1-turn drafting farm if we want it.
Ironworks - Constantinople, if anywhere. Probably not worth it.

2. Tech path.
Trade Gunpoweder for Optics+Music+World Map+gold with Willem van Oranje.
After Nationalism research Drama for Globe, and then head to Rifling (my choice) or Guilds/MilTrad.
After Printing Press, if we don't get Guilds/Engineering, we should be able to lightbulb Astro with our next Great Scientist.

3. War plans.
We have a stack of mostly elephants+siege in Lagos. We sould probably send it against someone.
Antioch looks like a goldmine, but we will have a very long front in a war with J.
Willem - not sure. I suspect his land is more developed than what we can see; after taking his map this will be easier to decide.
I am leaning toward attacking J, as he has a tech lead over W.

4. Other
After trading for Optics, immediately whip a Caravel in Nottingham, and send it west.
How long do we want to be in OrgRel? By the end of your turnset, we should be building mostly units, and don't want to pay the high upkeep costs. Consider switching to FreeReligion or Pacifism.
We don't really need monasteries everywhere, IMO Cannons are better

@ZPV: Moai and Globe is not a very good combo but Lisbon is clearly the best candidate for the Globe right now... I guess it will be quickly built at least :)

I don't understand the gunpowder trade though: we do plan to kill him no? Why trade him a military tech?

If we drop from OR, I think pacifism would be a bad choice while building military ;)

Cheers

I know, but I don't see anything better. We could work coast tiles for a while there.

I forgot we had already taken Liberalism. :smoke: We should trade something like Philo instead. I chose Gunpowder as it is not a monopoly tech, but a Philo monopoly doesn't matter so much any more.

I am sorry.

I have technical problems with the SGOTM and will have to reinstall civ completely to get it to work. I can't find time before wednesday :(

i'll pick it up and play tonight.

Leaning towards war with Just unless JC comes knocking first

Weed :smoke:, weed :smoke:, and more weed :smoke:

apologies but i forgot to resize the screenies

The trading situation with regard to philosophy wasn’t very good with no one prepared to offer a little gold and a world map neither of which were really any use to us at the moment.

1540AD, Started with the usual bad event

BadEvent.jpg

However a visit to Justinian and we were able to bully optics from him, this did mean an enforced 10 turns of peace but this would give us time to put together another reasonable stack so we could attack both parts of his little country at once. It also meant that he could develop our future lands just a little bit more.

BulliedFromJust.jpg

With the advent of Nationalism, civics were immediately changed including changing to Free Religion to start drafting.

Civics-1.jpg

1545AD Drama was quickly learnt before heading research wise towards Rifling

1550AD A Great Scientist is born in London, I decide to settle him now oxford is being built there

Another neighbour turned up who was ameniable to a little trade

WangKonTrade.jpg

1555AD Guilds

1560AD, I finally remembered to whip the caravel in Nottingham :hammer2:

1565AD Banking, I didn’t revolt to Mercantilism as this would have cost us our overseas trade routes.

1570AD –

1575AD – Our GA comes to an end and with a little bullying Wang Kon lets us have his world map, an unforeseen effect of this is that we have proved the world is round and get +1 ship movement

BulliedFromWangKon.jpg

1580AD - seemed like a good stopping point

During the set i'd been drafting & whipping so we now have a reasonable second stack available, two turns until the peace with Justinian can be cancelled and i would then suggest he be fully er... redeployed.
