Salt vs. sugar: the final battle!

Let's be honest; every one of us was that kid who put sugar on his/her Chocolate Sugar Puffs. No matter how much candy we got on Halloween, we wanted to eat as much of it on that very night as possible, even if it made us sick.

Does this change as we get older? For the past few years, I've had a severe salt craving. It's so bad that I actually lick my finger, dip it in salt, and lick the salt off my finger, and would rather do that once than eat all the Skittles in the world. I could be eating anchovies straight from the tin, and be like "you know what would make these better? Some salt!"

Has this happened to any of you? Sugar vs. salt: you decide!

EDIT: this isn't spam, by the way. This might be an as-yet undiscovered phenomenon of human development worthy of scientific study.

My wife and are totally different. If we buy ice cream, it sings to me from the freezer every evening, reminding me that it's there. My wife doesn't ever want any ice cream. But if there're a bag of chips, they've a half-life of about 2 days if she knows about them. Now, I'll dig into the chips (sometimes) if someone else is eating them, but I don't feel the urge to open a bag in the pantry

I loved sugary stuff when I was younger. Chocolate bars, ice cream, sodas, and all the fun stuff that we all love.

As I got older I began to crave spicy stuff. I put sriachia (sp?) on whatever I can. Ice cream is still my weakness though. I don't think I can "moderately" eat ice cream.

azzaman is correct. Given chocolate, it's hard to go for salt, but then it is a far better option a lot of the time.

What are chocolate sugar puffs?

And these are what I ate as a child and even now.

These are dried sour plums. They are covered in both sugar and salt crystals. They used to make my mouth twitch and my body spasm. Now, only the really sour ones can do that to me.

A fictitious cereal that I made up to avoid specifically endorsing Kellog's or General Mills. The name also sounded super-sugary and reminiscent of a cereal from a Calvin & Hobbes strip.

Meh. My body doesn't like large amounts of both sugar and salt so I've never used sugar with my cereal, and hardly use salt on my food. It happens often that in processed foods that I can taste the salt itself in it because of how much there is (while another person wouldn't taste it and claim it's a delicious meal).

So neither, really. I use each when it is applied. Sugar with pancakes. Salt with cooked food and popcorn.

I never was a big candy guy as a kid, and I still don't really crave candy today. I do, however, have huge craving for ice cream and pie sometimes, so I still have that sugar drive.

I'm not a big salt person though.

Sugar and salt are both toxic to humans in large amounts, but I take about a 1/2 packet in sugar in every cup of black coffee. I use salt sparingly, usually only to help with boiling water, or when black pepper isn't enough to awaken the flavor.

Where I come from, you can't call a black coffee a black coffee if there is sugar or cream in it. If you want a coffee with sugar in it, you have to say coffee with sugar. :crazyeye:

This thread has already way too much innuendo

I ate oatmeal and bagels as a child. I never ate the candy I trick or treated for on Halloween.

Salt by a long shot.

I still enjoy sugar from fruits, pies, the occasional cake, and brownie, but salty foods are my friends. Though I haveve always been kinda that way.

I support this sentiment but I definitely never added sugar to my cereal. I found it to be a bizarre concept and I was always concerned that it would add mushiness. That said I loved me some commercially sugary cereals.

Sugar is an addictive substance responsible in part for more than 50% of untimely deaths.

Never added sugar to my cereal.

I HAVE added sugar to buttered toast, quick and easy sweet snack (Advanced: Add Cinnamon).

And on the salt side of things I'm still shocked by how much my g/f's family adds salt to their foods. They complain that the food doesn't taste of anything until they do. Now yes, sometimes food needs a bit of salt, but they are just so...excessive.

I added a minute amount (a pinch) of sugar to corn flakes, grits, and oatmeal, but that was it. Fruity Pebbles and King Vitamin were already tasty enough without the addition. I liked sweets as a kid, but I was also nuts for Salt and Vinegar potato chips. Still am, but I can't eat them (or other salty foods) at the moment thanks to blood pressure. My mom, niece, and nephew will heap salt on their fruit, which I think is disgusting.

I do take my coffee black and sweet, though.
