Schools close in Ohio due to Wild Lion Attacks

Should people be allowed to own exotic animals?

If you can't keep it fenced in and it becomes a threat to someone, it's going to get shot. No need to punish law-abiding, responsible people for the acts of someone who clearly had severe mental illness.
Eh, I don't really think it's all that harsh a punishment to say "No leopards for you."

When I saw the thread title I thought that it was referring to Mountain Lions.

I'm surprised that they managed to get the bears and wolves. I'm surprised that they didn't escape fully into the wild considering they are both native to this region of North America.

I don't know the specifics of the story (i.e. how the man came to own these animals). But, my guess is that a lot of these exotic animals end up private sanctuaries because other people want to unload them (or have to unload them by law) once the animals have grown up. Imo, ban the possession of potentially deadly animals regardless of their age, with a grandfather clause included (which stipulates that these animals must be given up to zoo whenever possible). Most of these top predators don't have that long of a lifespan (with primates being one of the main exceptions), so the grandfather clasue would expire pretty quickly.

Back in the day my parents had to walk to school uphill in the snow both ways whilst wielding machetes to fend off attacks from the local lion pride. Kids are coddled way too much in this modern age.

Once again the government has to step in and clean up the failure of the private sector.

I wouldn't have a problem with private ownership of some exotic animals, provided some very strict regulations. However, what I have in mind, I doubt most people would qualify. Among those who wouldn't, most circuses.

My grandpa owned a "dog" that was 3/4 wolf, 1/8th coyote and 1/8th German Sheppard. In Ohio, yeah. She was a great animal and I don't have much problem with that type of ownership.

Lions? No. They can be adorable and cuddly but they're as lethal as a gun with a mind of their own. However, if I could have a lion, I'd be totally in favour of it. It'd just be a scaled up kitty

That's nothing !
My father went to school in rural Yugoslavia during WW 2.
What the woods lacked in lions they more than made up for in wolves, bears, Croatian fascists, Serbian monarchists, German nazis and assorted partisans.

Machetes? Machetes! You had it soft. We had to fend of crack addled ninja lions with nothing but harsh language and "windy" Hammond's unusual odour!

You should keep away from Regents Park

I wonder if Jack Hanna has a camera crew following him around?

Heh. There is already so many jokes about this running around in the Central Ohio area. People have made twitter accounts for the wolves, bears and lions and I saw a fellow student at OSU running around in a bear costume, which I am not sure, but I assume was related.

Last I heard on our local news, all that is left now is a wolf, a bear and a monkey.

Just be glad you don't have to get your food like this

Looks like only two left BBC news said earlier that three were left. Animals should be protected against wildly irresponsible owners. You should not have to rely on shooting the animals.

Houston Chronicle/ AP

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said at an afternoon news conference that the danger had passed and they could reopen. The animals killed included 18 Bengal tigers, 17 lions, eight bears and a wolf, he said.

The only animals not found were a wolf and a monkey. Authorities said the monkey should be shot if caught because it could be carrying a disease.

A friend just shared this photo on facebook. Very sad.

Warning: If you are an animal lover you might not want to look.

So he let them out then shot himself.

Will the governor of Ohio lose votes over this because of his support for lack of regulation?

Very funny.

To answer yo question: I think the Democrats in the state is too busy fighting against the redistricting issue.
