Shooting at Montreal University

Thank; my brother is fine. My initial concern was for my father, who also works there, and my friend. Neither had classes today.

I doubt there going to any big increases in society, unlike September 11th.
Glad to see everyone around you is allright. It's crazy. I was discussing with friends and we realized that everyone knows someone who attends or works at Dawson. As far as we know, nobody we know was hurt, but there's a lot of people in this city who will be affected by this.

I really want to know the motives behind this dispecable act. Not that it's going to do any real good, or probably make any sense, but I need to know.

So what's a CEGEP school?

I was wondering that myself... I cant think of what it stands for.

Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel.

In Québec, students finish high school at the equivalent of Grade 11. Many then choose to attend a two-year pre-university program, or a three-year technical program (similar to a college diploma), at a CEGEP. The two-year program is worth one year of credits at university, so Québec students generally take only three years to earn their Bachelor's.

wow i never thought a school shotting would ever happen in perfect little ol' canada.

and its the third time since 1989 :(

we had our fair share of wacko's shooting people.

Montreal was the host for all 3 of them!

how the hell did he put his hands on that type of gun?

He's just a weirdo.
Probably a philosophy that was (to him) consistent enough that shooting people was deemed to be a good thing.
Stupid.

Pottymouth. :p

We know of course where these guns come from, the same country that always claims our lax laws pose a security threat to them. Of course, count of Harpercrite the Sycophant to not raise the issue.

Meet the shooter:

The gunman who went on a shooting rampage at a Montreal college Wednesday apparently left an online journal with chilling comments and photos of himself brandishing a rifle.

Kimveer Gill was the author of an online diary posted at the website vampirefreaks.com.

Gill, 25, was dressed entirely in black, wearing a trench coat and armed with a rifle when he arrived at Dawson College on Wednesday afternoon.

That's just in Quebec. IIRC, there have been school shooting in ROC as well.
CBC has a feature on it; the only Canadian incident since the Polytechnique was a single killing in Taber, Alberta, in 1999.

Exactly. Black market for automatic weapons is based in the States. If it's possible for a guy in NY state, Maine or Vermont to buy these weapons, it's not very hard for someone here to get their hands on them. For once, their permissive and lenient laws should be at least mentionned. They're the ones with the gun culture, with the taste for bullets and useless automatic weaponry. I don't count on Harper to start making some sense anytime soon though.

Automatic weapons are literally and figuratively in a different class than semiautomatic rifles or pistols. You need a ClassIII permit (requiring a substantial background check), cannot buy ones manufactured after ~1995 (not sure of the year), and between the firearm itself and tax stamps you're way over USD$1000 and possibly above $10000. So while it is certainly possible, the regulations tend to prevent your average joe from getting a full-auto weapon legally here.
