I think that, given we don't know those people personally, the only way to judge whether any fa are worse than antifa and vice-versa we would have to examine just how violent they are. I mean... it isn't as if fa are in tautology with right, and antifa with left. They are more shadowy groups. I think the point of confusion here is the "ironic-but-not-ironic" use of Nazi tropes by the alt-right. These guys definitely broadcast themselves in such a way that attracting Nazis, Klansmen and Sovereign Citizens was inevitable, but I don't know how clearly the tosspots running things appreciated that.

My guess would be that some of them understood this full well, that this was their intention, and the rest were too credulous to join the dots.

It comes from an inability to conceptualise that individuals have their own agency and beliefs. Someone must be paying all the people I don't like to be that way because they couldn't just all be that way on their own.

How would you feel if your also sponsored protesters-colleagues would use violence against people and property? Would you question the fact that these people should be sponsored?
