very true. but it's not really about free speech. it's about igniting memories of sept 11th from a movie title. if they went to the media, who remembers the event every single day on purpose, then it would be a free speech issue. why don't they go after guests on talk shows who constantly talk about the event, slinging the phrase "9-11" like it's nothing? why don't they go after the papers who are always showing the burning buildings every day? instead, they go for a hollywood movie based on popular literature just because it's commercialized and they would get more of a responce, which it seems is not the responce they want.

i can see why they want to change the title, but i don't agree with it. they are over sensitive, and giving in to exactly what the terrorists wanted us to do. we should never forget, never deny, and never forgive... and they're trying to do it by changing the title of a classic story. what's next? changing bob the builder because he MAKES buildings?

they're idiots, and the sad part is they've probably already started breeding.

Simon, I don't give a [expletive deleted] if it's a troll or not. It's been getting some major media coverage, and barring the absurd possibility that it's a really unnecessary LOTR promo stunt, this sort of thing shouldn't even be allowed to be aired with the seriousness that it has been.

Who voted no.1!!!!!!!!

THey shouldn't change the name for any reason at all. As we know Tolkein came up with this years earlier, decades. Soon everybody will complain about every stupid thing.

I just want to say to all you guys out there who is whining about the movie title:

Give it a break! Come on! Look deep into yourselves... Arent you a bit OVERSENSITIVE?? Have you bothered to read the book? Do you know why its called the two towers? Does any plane with Al Queda terrorists crash in to the towers?

BTW: I havent heared any of the Nazis complaining even if There is a scene where Saruman is standing and watching his troops who looks like one from a Nazi propaganda movie!

I voted 2

in my list of all time stupid this goes right up beside the kid who's family is sewing Mcdonnalds because of how fat he's gotten and people who take the elevator but use the stair master at the gym.

sorry, I don't think highly of people these days.

i dont see why mcdonalds cares about the law suit with the fat kid, they'll get all the money back if its true anyway.... ;)

All I can say is "Wow."

Too bad stupidity is no longer the "capital offense" it once was.

Are we allowing ourselves to de-evolve?

Some quick facts;
Tolkien began working on the Lord of the Rings in 1937.
The WTC was complete in 1977.

As is obvious;
A professor working in 1930's Oxford was quite unaware those two large buildings that would be constructed in a different continent 40 years later.

IMHO,
OK, some people are very sensitive about the WTC, but we have to get things in perspective here.
Anyone trying to defame Tolkien’s work over the 9/11/01 tragedy should try and grasp reality.

This is a fantasy novel; the Twin Towers in NYC and the towers of Isengard and Cirith Ungol are different in this respect;

The difference is 'Reality and Fantasy.'

I find it very sad that there are people who would try and compare real-life tragedy with a creation
A man who merely wanted people to forget their troubles with some fantasy.

It is like when the hippies attacked 'Star Wars...A new hope' as a play on the US involvement in Vietnam...how stupid can you get?

If the movie is renamed in the USA, it will be a triumph for political correctness.
Then anything will be open season for censorship.
And after that...what?
Book burning?

It heartens me that most people are scoffing at this (which is what's deserved), rather than taking it seriously or even considering the proposal. This guy just had his "15 minutes of fame" now, NEXT!...

It is like the "Kitten Bonsai" website, if a tad more subtle. Of course it shouldn't be allowed to be aired; the fact that it is being taken seriously just points to the general gullibility of the human race. :ack:

Do me a favor everyone: mail this to everyone on your e-mail list with the subject:

"What you are doing"

...is at best, misguided. I believe it is actually a very bad idea that will do great harm, and little if any good. Please skip the note to my friends below, and read why.

(To my friends who have recieved this e-mail:
Please go to this website http://www.twotowersprotest.org/index.html, and read of the horror being undertaken by this organization. Then read my reply, and if you agree, forward it to everyone you know, and also back to the protesters, reachable at twotowersprotest@twotowersprotest.org . I want them to realize the errors of their way, but I am certain that one voice will not be enough to call them back to reason. Please help me help them see the light.

Also, please visit http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?lotr2 and support the original name by signing the petition against changing the title.

To twotowersprotest:
I understand that you feel that some will have painful associations with the name of this 50+ year old classic of modern literature, due to the terrorist activities of September 11th, 2001. Your concern for these people is commendable, but I do not feel that you are acting properly, and I am hoping that you will at least take the time to hear why.

The first reason I think this is wrong is because it smacks of the worst form of political correctness. I truly believe that the person who thought this up is probably one of those people that thinks ''[Insert Ethnicity Here]-American' is an appropriate form of address for a group of people, instead of just calling them Americans. By adding the extra label, you are merely pointing out a meaningless difference, the national origin of their ancestors, and perpetuating racial hatreds and tensions. This is yet another form of that political correctness, in this case, YOU are dredging up emotions that others are trying to get past, by associating a classic piece of literature with a terrorist action, when the two have nothing, absolutely nothing, in common. The structures destroyed in the WTC attack were the WTC TWIN Towers, NOT 'The Two Towers'. There were seven towers all total in the WTC. Yes, the most noticeable were the two largest, but they were side by side, not separated by three kingdoms, two forests, a mountain range, and two rivers, like Orthanc and Barad-Dur were.

The second reason I think this is wrong is because, quite frankly, The Two Towers was written nearly 60 years previous to the tragic events of 9-11-01. No one 'chose' to name the movie 'after' the event, that was its title 60 years ago, and it remains its title today. Would you re-name the recent made-for-TV movie 'The Flood', starring Jon Voight, about the Biblical Flood to something else in deference to victims of a flood on the Mississippi? I would hope not. It would be oversensitive to the point of being silly, wouldn't it?

The third reason I think this is a terrible idea, is because by doing this, you are basically handing Osama bin Laden a can of spray paint and turning him loose in the Louvre, to spit on Western art. This is yet another self-victimizing reaction to his assault, collateral damage that we are causing to ourselves in our haste to soften his blow. His intent was to change our hated way of life, where ideas, including stories, are freely spoken, without censorship. Weakening ourselves, even in so small a way as this, gives him hope that he will one day succeed. Do you really want to give something as powerful as hope to a man like Osama?

The fourth reason I feel that this is a bad idea, is because by making all this fuss, YOU are forcing people to associate the book with the terrorist event, and vice-versa. If you manage to establish this connection, you may well destroy the legacy of JRR Tolkien by forever associating it with the repugnant name of Osama bin Laden, and if you do so, you will have joined his ranks as an ardent supporter. Your petition is a direct service to Osama, and greatly helps his cause, by defacing the pillars of western civilization. You may as well paint 'Death to America' on the Statue of Liberty if you proceed with this, because that is what it boils down to, another gob of mud slung at the West, inspired and whole-heartedly approved by Osama bin Laden. He thanks you for your support.

The fifth reason is closely related to the fourth, and admittedly of somewhat dubious strength, as I doubt it applies to all of the victim's families equally. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an escapist fantasy, where many go to elude the toils and tribulations of modern life, to immerse themselves in a simpler time, with simpler worries and cares, a place where evil and good have capital letters, and the bad guys are discernible from the good guys. If you take this away from those among the family and friends of the victims who went there to ease their pain, by successfully associating the two unrelated things, then you have taken that place of peace from them, and dimmed their world even further. Nearly 3,000 died, and their lives must have touched 30,000 or more directly. Of those, who can say how many like losing themselves in a good book, and of those, how many in Tolkien's? Your actions threaten to take that away from them.

You hope to gain very little from your actions: 'gaining increased sensitivity for the victims' is the only one you saw fit to list on your website. Believe me when I tell you that your success will greatly diminish sensitivity for the victims, AND create animosity and contempt for the forces of political correctness everywhere, AND for the victims. There is a growing movement in today's society that would love to see the end of PC, and this may well be the wooden stake to drive in its heart. I would love to see that happen, but not at this price. I do not want the memory of the victims tainted by this seriously misguided movement, and I do not want Tokien's legacy tarnished by it either. If you must be the death of PC, find another way. You will hurt them unneccessarily, and damage a great work of literature in the process. The price is too high. You are hurting those you claim to want to spare from pain, and doing it by ruining something that is truly beautiful, and that should be held far above the worldly concerns of men. In all of this, only one man wins.

Osama. bin. Laden.

Nicely put, FearlessLeader2!

:goodjob:

I will email my own protest to these Political Correctness-mongers..

FearlessLeader2:

I applaud your letter: extremely well-written and argued.

However, I do wonder whether it will have any effect, no matter how many people send it to the twotowersprotest site. To hope for an effect is to believe that they are interested in rational debate and the truth.

It is far more likely they are simply after their 15 minutes of fame (as allan2 said). The very tone of their manifesto (with its references to "hate speech") makes it clear they are either stupid or vicious.

I agree however that we should make our friends and acquaintaces aware of this ludicrous campaign. The more people know the facts, the less effect this sort of mindless demagoguery can have.

True, and in that spirit, I shall edit my letter to include a link to the anti-change petition.

I'm sorry Allan2, but in fact, we are REWARDING stupidity these days. Some examples:
1. $12 million awarded to woman for spilling McDonald's coffee over herself.
2. Man suing McDonalds for getting fat, and seems to be gaining support.

Curt- if this were real and it were renamed this would not be a victory for "political correctness". Political correctness, though open to abuse from hypersensitive jerks, has to do (in my mind) with using the correct terms that people wish to be called by (i.e. "Native Americans" instead of Indians, "Suomi" instead of Finns, "Confederation Helvetica" instead of Switzerland) and doing your best to eliminate biased perpective from your speech (i.e. "Orient" means East... but it isn't east to people in Japan, "freshmen" aren't all men, so maybe your first year of college should be called your "first year student year").

This business of renaming the Two Towers is either (if Simon is correct) a sick joke or a sicker abuse of the victims of the Tragic Events of September 11 Day. I have heard people getting worked up against those people ("they are becoming professional victims"), and I too have felt at times too much money was diverted their way, but NO influence has gone to those folks at all, many of whom are actually suing our government for its subsequent actions "in their name".

The Two Towers will retain its name, this silliness will fade into the backdrop. Better to look into the naming and merit of films like "Collateral Damage" if you want to forge a sensitive society.

If I'm wrong, and they do decide that somehow calling it by its name will stop the hordes of fans from going (it won't), I hope they choose "Tale of a Land of Evil Far to the East Hidden Behind Some Mountains, Ruled by a Fanatical Dictator who sends his Henchmen to Live among the Good Peoples of the Kindly West"....

they didnt succeed or the movie would have been renamed by now, at least in america :)
