Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

I'm quite happy with a freshly re-modded version of Oblivion right now, so I'm not too fussed. After all, with Steam, it's not going anywhere, it's unlikely to appear second-hand and the price is hardly likely to go down, so rushing to play it is not high on my priority list.

Actual game discussion: do you guys ever make characters that aren't really optimal in terms of race/skill specialization choices? Everytime I go "I'm gonna do something strange like a Bosmer heavy armor knight!", 5 hours later I realize I'm a stealthy archer in a leather armor and I failed to keep to my theme; the race benefits were too much of a magnet.

Just to come back on that... It's just, you know, they say that you don't have to pick a class and there is no such thing as a class; your character skills just increase organically with use. However, it seems that races give you very strong incentives to play a certain style. So in effect, when you choose a race, you almost choose a class at the same time as races and class almost go hand in hand. I mean the Altmer, for instance, have super high magicka regen and they are the obvious pure mage choice. I guess it depends on how big the race boons are, but they seem pretty strong. I'm aware you can still just do what you want (Altmer heavy armor knight), but are you working just a bit against what the game is suggesting without taking away from the experience? Or are you just annoying yourself a whole lot because of how useful the race boons are?

You're in Europe, I don't know, maybe the info I read was for North America having only one time for everybody... But I doubt it. One thing for sure, it's gonna be earlier than the usual 10 AM Valve time. I know I'll be drooling in front of my comp until it unlocks when I'm back from work later. Then I bet it won't unlock for hours after the countdown is over :(

I've played as an Imperial paladin and an Argonian tank (think Panzer IVs) and noticed no real problems.

I've done that in Morrowind but not in Oblivion, in Oblivion I mostly went for more obvious things. The Imperial Paladin seems at home in his role... Argonian tank is interesting. My very first character in Morrowind was an Argonian which ended up being a heavy-armored battlemage. I didn't really realize it was out of character, but he was so over-powered at the end.

Imperials are "supposed" to be smooth-talking rogues. My guy had decent charisma but toted around heavy armor and shield, and I had Absorb Health on Touch hotkeyed. In the rare cases where what I was trying to kill had more HP than I had magicka, I would slash it with a longsword till it stopped breathing.

I am considering making a Herobrine based of hand-to-hand combat, dragon shouts (and magic), stealth, and perhaps use a blunt weapon if any is going to look like a pickaxe of some sort.
It's probably going to be a joke-character for after I've done at least some sort of playthrough with my first character, which might as well be based on dexterity, stealth, alchelism, and bows. Might as well make it a female imperial or other sort of human race.

Also, another review in case anybody has missed it:

I dunno, at least in Skyrim the skills Imperials start with a bonus in are Block, heavy armor, one-handed, destruction, restoration and enchanting, none of which are in "The Thief" nebulae. Maybe it was different before, I never played an imperial.

They have a crapton of charisma, though.

According to USEP:
Male

* +10 Personality
* -10 Agility and Willpower
Skills

* +10 Mercantile, Speechcraft and Heavy Armor
* +5 Blade, Blunt and Hand to Hand
Traits

* Star of the West greater power (Form ID 00047ADE): Absorb Fatigue 100 points on Touch, once per day
* Voice of the Emperor greater power (Form ID 00047ADD): Charm 30 points for 30 seconds on Target, once per day

It's kind of half and half.

Yeah I was a bit surprised that they didn't have at least Speech in Skyrim.

Here's another nagging minor thing I've been thinking of... On consoles, right trigger activates your right hand, left trigger activates your left hand. Thus on PC it seems right-click will activate your right hand and left click your left hand.

This is okay on consoles because left trigger uses your shield hand. But on PC, left click to use shield and right click to attack is weird. I guess I'll be left handed? I wonder how weird that'll feel.

There's always the option of remapping... but then if you dual-wield, I'm pretty sure the left-click left hand right click right hand setup would be better so you have to reremap.

I don't care that it's backwards. I never had a problem in LoZ games even though Link's a lefty.

That's the first thing I'm going to rebind. Left click is right hand and right click is left hand. Pointer finger is more used than middle one (unless you're a Yankee).

Z-targeting is first person. Oblivion and Morrowind as well.

Still, that's the point of keybinding. If it feels awkward to you, change it.

Well, I've just read that they've removed Athletics, Acrobatics and Hand-to-Hand. It seems that my Imperial pugilist (super-athletic boxer) concept will be dead in the water.

Perks.

Mmhmm, mmhmm, pretty much a standard review all things considered, nothing special here...

*Double takes at the last couple of paragraphs*

Six factions? What are the others besides Fighter's, Thieves, Mages, and Dark Brotherhood? Anyone know?

Edit: Nevermind, found the info on the UESP wiki.

I'm starting to weaken, considering rushing out to get this game now. Decisions, decisions.

I must say, the graphics from images I've seen don't look too... thrilling at all. They do the job, but not what "Ultra" on a game should look like. :hmm: I know Bethesda games aren't played for the graphics, but it would have been nice.

Slightly annoying that the PC version hasn't got a proper manual unlike the Xbox version. It's hard to plan ahead without knowing almost anything about the game mechanics.

Gamespot reviewer says there are lots of glitches (not surprising though).

Beth's gonna release a patch at midnight along with the release.

Aesthetics are supposedly better than the graphics. Backgrounds are covered with mist and snow to cover up bad spots and make them look cooler. They do the job for me.
