Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

Holy fork, since when do dragons attack cities ?
I want to use the smelter in Whiterun and suddenly I read 'You can not use this during combat'. I turn around and everybody has their weapon drawn and the beast just sits on the city wall.

A dragon attacking a village is very common, but I've never seem them attacking major cities (those with walls). It may be a new feature or just a rare bug. :hmm:

I was in Winterhold when a dragon attacked, first in the Guild of Mages where it was handily seen off, and then in the town where my help was sorely needed!

When was that ? Before or after the latest patch ?

I've only seen dragons attacking small settlements or stables in front of cities before. I haven't played Skyrim in a couple of months. I suspect these attacks are either so rare that just assume they don't happen or they are the (unintentional?) result of recent patches.
By the way, the body-count was four people including Nazeem and Amren. Yeah, half of the victims were black. I wonder if the dragon's name was Albi.

That was pre-patch, I assume, as I haven't played in easily a couple of months either.

I got this cool pic during a settlement attack a couple of months ago. Notice kid don't give a flock.

I don't think it's a bug. I routinely had dragons attack the Mages' Gold. I also had several instances where dragons attacked Markarth (which, being a melee character, you can imagine was a major pain in the ass to deal with). I don't think I've ever seen one in Whiterun before though.

That is Morthal. I almost always seem to encounter a dragon when fast traveling there. However, I've never saw a dragon inside a major city that has walls. Apparently it's a possible event, but it seems to be much less frequent than in those smaller settlements.

Winterhold seems to be a dragon magnet, as it gets attacked pretty much anytime I go there. Same with Dawnstar. I also had one attack Markarth a few weeks ago.

It's not patch related, I haven't played this game since about a month after it came out and I had it happen to me in Whiterun. Luckily I was still low level at the time so the dragon was pretty weak and didn't manage to kill any important NPC's, just a few guards. And when I played it seemed like I got attacked at the mages college half the time I went there, dragons must really despise mages, or maybe mages are extra tasty because of all the magicka coursing through them or something.

Just started playing again after a long hiatus and trying to decide what I should do before the fabled DLC comes out over the summer.

Same with me regarding the College of Wizards. It got to the point every time I go there I'd stop in the Courtyard and look around for the dragon that was going to show up. Not sure why, but it was about 4 out of 5 times when there'd be a dragon there.

And Dawnstar, dawnstar was also a place where I'd see a dragon pop up every time I visited. The most entertaining time was when a dragon showed up while I was trying to use a giant to level my archery. So it was me+like 20 dawnstar guards vs. a giant vs. a dragon vs. some ice wolves that showed up towards the end.

Sounds like the time I wondered up near Autumnwatch Tower from Ivarstead, and had two dragons, bunch of Draugr Deahtlords, two Storm Thralls, and brave old (somewhat idiotic) Lydia running around and killing everything else.

I've never seen one in any major city. I wonder if the deadly dragons mod affects where the attack.

I haven't played Skyrim for awhile. I'm level 30-35 with glass and dragonscale armor. I use destruction mostly (installed mods that actually make offensive magic more useful) but I've found that magic is still underpowered (and destruction levels really slowly), while the two swords I tote around are too powerful. I'm playing on max difficulty. I need some mods to either make magic more fun and useful or something to make the game harder, because I honestly can't get back into it with the current difficulty.

IMO destruction with a free destruction gear, the impact perk and Expert level spells is OP without any mods. You can just stagger everything, including Alduin, with Impact and throw free spells until it dies. I only play on Expert difficulty though but I don't think it's different on Master. It just takes more time to kill.

EDIT. stronger destruction is a double-edged sword. Some of the most dangerous enemies (arc mages, dragon priests..) will become even more lethal.

I want balanced, not OP. I have a mod that tones impact down. Plus I would prefer to fight with a sword in one hand and shoot fireballs from the other.

Speaking of dragons, I think it's nice not to advance the main quest far enough to where they show up. That way I can do all the side quests in peace without being bothered by dragons. I hate being bothered by dragons when I'm just wanting to explore the countryside. As a melee heavy character, it takes sometimes 10 minutes to track the thing down so it won't keep flying away and then take him down. Waste of time.

The downside is you can't get any shouts. But I almost always forget to use them anyways.

That's easy, just ignore Whiterun's mage when he asks you to get that stone from Bleakfall Barrows in the early game. It really makes the game that much better, as dragons quickly lose their novelty and become just a chore after the 10th or so.

I like shouts, how else would I navigate a city when I'm overencumbered?
