Morning, Day 9

There was something strange going on this morning. A deep intensity filled the air as the Paladin, who had the arena choice, stepped out from the isolation and into the arena. It was as if the air was sparking with some unknown force. It was as if the new narrator himself carried a grudge against the holy warrior. The Paladin knelt and said a quick prayer, and the aura of hate dissipated, the narrator duly chastised.

Now, the Ritualist took the stage. His every feature was what could only be described as evil, possibly even vile. He spared no expenses this time, with his long, black robe that wore the mark of the Ashen Veil, red as if in painted in blood - which, if you looked closer, seemed to be the case. A malicious smile reared itself on the face of the profane as reality begun to change.

The audience fell silent in amazement as the arena of the Paladin's choice materialized itself. They found themselves inside a marvelleous cathedral, built in simple stone, but with absolutely amazing panes of coloured glass in the windows. Many were reminded of the Luonnotar's arena choice, but the audience inside this cathedral was so tranquil and sacred that the resemblence did soon falter.

The Ritualist stood near the entrance of the magnificent cathedral, and the Paladin in front of the altar, where a large statue of Junil, the Angel of Law, was standing in majesty. The voice of the Paladin was heard throughout the entire cathedral, magnified by its impressive acoustics as well as a fair bit of magic from the officials' side: "I, The Sword of Junil, will rid us all of you, wretched hellspawn."

The profane spoke, but somehow the very acoustics of the cathedral resisted his sepulchral voice, and all the audience could hear was a beastlike growling, followed by a coarse and chilling laughter. Dark flames begun to form around the evil priest, as his sepulchral speech became a ritual chant. The Paladin lifted his shield and begun a steady march towards his adversary.

The crowd cheered as the lance of hellfire hit the Paladin head on with a force that would have knocked over a smaller building. The holy warrior hardly noticed, protecting himself behind his shield. The Ritualist grunted, and found a ritual knife. As he cut his palm, a gruesome language of hell itself came from deep within him. Where his blood spilled, the floor cracked.

Eyes filled with the pleasure of causing pain, the Ritualist stepped back as the cracks in the floor grew larger. Suddenly, flames sprung from the cracks, and a demon rose from the flaming pit where the profane had spilled his blood. It had red skin, was engulfed in flames, and carried a rather brutal instrument that bore only the slightest resemblance to anything the audience had seen before. That would be a huge axe.

The Paladin proceeded, sword lifted, against this new enemy, as the priest of hell fell further back, resting from the tiring ritual. The demon barked and jumped towards the holy warrior, bringing the huge and beastly weapon down towards him with both hands.

The impact was the cause of minor earthquakes, and the coloured panes of the cathedral shook, but remained intact. The Paladin had caught the strike right on his shield, and everyone was amazed to see that it had resisted the blow. With a swift flick of his sword, he opened a wound in the demon, down its entire left side. A howl of pain was herd, but the Paladin was not done. With a move full of resolution, he gestured with his left hand. A ray of pure light emanated and banished the wailing demon back to the hells from which he had come.

With renewed determination the Paladin continued his march towards the Ritualist, sword lifted once more. A philosopher among the audience incidentally became very rich by watching this fight; he had found out what you get when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object: A Paladin. Anything the evil priest threw at his adversary, the holy warrior merely deflected with his shield as he came even closer. The audience held their breath as the unstoppable Paladin came closer and closer to the dark figure who unleashed terror after terror towards him, in complete vain.

The battle was ended as the Paladin brought down his sword once, brutally ridding the world of one more evil and leaving a rather large dent in what had earlier been the Ritualist. Black flames consumed the body of the fallen profane, and cheers erupted from the crowd as reality was restored.

The Paladin knelt to pray before leaving the arena by himself. What medical staff that reached him had to realize that he did not even need their assistance. They were still trying to pick up their underjaws as the pompeous official took the stage. It was his grandest moment, the mornings, when no one knew in advance what his message would be.

"It is with great pleasure I announce that we this evening will see two old men beat each other up. One a grizzled reaver, the other a grizzled bookworm, when the Pirate takes on the Archmage in an arena of his choice.
