Though he notes that that's entirely speculation, as compared to his previous predictions which were based on something. I wouldn't say the date he gives is the important part of what you quote, but the fact that he doesn't have anything to predict, and can only speculate.

I don't know whether there exists at all in digital distribution such a thing as a Christmas sale, at least not in the traditional form. On the contrary, the fact (?) that at the time the big AAA titles are in the spotlight [presumably due to Christmas releases], could adversely impact on it [the chances of any DLC]. So think (?) that new DLC for January/February is more likely.

Just to be safe: This is all pure speculation, I know of nothing.

Yeah, this seems to be based on lack of knowledge rather than knowledge.

However, depending on the source for previous revelations, lack of knowledge is pretty significant too. I'm not sure I buy his argument entirely. Just because there are big titles doesn't mean something small can't get through as a supplement to a game.

My prediction is Q1 2012 at the earlist for new stuff. If they were doing some sort of christmas release we would've known about it by now.

Excellent point. If there was to be a significant expansion most companies would rush to have it out at least a month before Christmas.

Last year, they released the Spain/Inca pack on December 16th and only announced it on December 10th - if that's anything to go by, we might still have a DLC just in time for Christmas that's announced in about five weeks' time.

Shafer wasn't in charge of Firaxis. He probably had some duty to both Firaxis and 2K to not reveal information in a way that would hurt their later advertising campaigns.

IIRC, Dennis Shirk is currently in charge of Civ5's ongoing refinement and new developments.

No, Shafer was the lead designer of CiV dude. I never said he was in charge of Firaxis.

New UU`s have been the point of endless debates on the forum, but I have a different suggestion. The UU is based on history, but history doesn`t necessarily repeat itself in CiV. My suggestion is to make some units available upon completing different policies. This will reflect the actual game and not previous history.

For example:

Commerce: Merchant raider/ privateer
Piety: Religious fanatic/ holy warrior / crusader
Tradition (monarchy): Royal Guard
Honour: Mercenary
Liberty: Pioneer (armed settler)
Autocracy: Storm trooper
Freedom: UN Peacekeeper

I like these ideas except call merchant raider a commerce raider. However, giving each civ a UU, gives players more of a sense of who they really were. We certainly are not getting a sense of who they were from the current diplomacy system in the game, so we have to do that in other ways.

*I know this to be true because Napoleon got mad at me for being a warmonger of all things! In real life he'd pat me on the back and call me his very good friend, you know why? Because in my game France is on the other side of the world. I have no direct influence with him militarily. In real life he would be glad for our mutually beneficial growing trade deals, which help him exert his plans of conquest over local enemies. In our current diplomacy system AI civs have no sense of themselves. Their is no reason behind, their foolish actions. Hopefully this gets changed in the future.

Yeah, they often announce it just a few days before release.
(which I personally find very odd business practice, I don't really understand the thinking behind that).

A patch always precedes new DLC content because it includes the new content, as well a patch to allow the AI to use it. When you buy the DLC you don't have to download anything -- it simply unlocks the content included in the patch.

Firaxis presumably doesn't announce DLC too far ahead because they're uncertain when the patch will be ready, and they don't want to miss the release date and delay it because the fans will flood the forums with complaints.

When Firaxis announces DLC, it's probably already ready, but they delay the release so players can see the announcements and ads, and people can hype it up on the forums. They're also probably doing last minute playtesting to ensure it works properly.

The DLCs remind me of the old saying about the best way to boil a frog without having it jump out of the pot: Start with cool water and then raise the temperature a little bit at a time so that the frog doesn't notice the difference. Eventually it's too late for the frog.

I figure by 2013 the forums will be ablaze with speculation about the hotly anticipated Liechtenstein DLC (Play as Johan I Josef!).

I wasn't saying you were. You did, however, suggest he was being too secretive and I suggested that was part of his job. He had bosses. Some of them were in marketing and didn't want him saying too much too early.

They need to release the DLL or bump up the maximum civs allowed on a map themselves, because as it stands now you can't even play with all the vanilla + DLC civs at once.

I rather have a huge patch and no DLC then just a crapy patch that fix minor problems but leave the major ones exposed.. And ad new stuf that olso need some rebalancing..


DLC is for me : firaxis and 2kgames saying sorry guys we can't fix the game because we start the AI from scratch and we failed but we give you extra stuf new civilizations to make the game a bit better so we can at least make some money out of this game!!!!!!!!

DLC has almost always coincided with patches. They're more or less handled by independent departments so releasing DLC does not substantially interfere with the patching process. If anything, it helps improve it by keeping more individuals employed.
