SPORE SimEarth game

Only for using the online user content (i.e. the Sporepedia). There is an offline mode for the CC editor, and I doubt that there won't be the same for Spore itself.

In more pleasant news, GFM has undergone some major changes...

I won't upload him yet... he's not quite perfect.

Well, in looking at the system requirements. I declare this game a borderline bloatware (Since I have a 2Ghz Pentium Chip in my laptop).

Also, I'm not too keen with Spore's Digital rights management with a limit of only three installation.

Yes the DRM kind of takes the semi-unpopular direct download management system and makes everyone use that. Supposedly you will be always able call EA's tech support to get your number of installations increased. The annoying thing is that possibly doing minor upgrades to your PC, or minor issues---RAM/CPU temporarily fails, will burn up an installation. At least that's my experience with direct download purchases.

EDIT: anyone know if SPORE especially supports Dual-core?

I would guess so long as your processor is above 2.0 Ghz there would not be a problem. Not sure if it would cause any false positives (As with the case in Half-Life 2: Lost Coast when Intel Core 2 or later/similar processors will trigger false warnings that the CPU is not fast enough to run the game)

The challenge to software publishers usually isn't having invulnerable copyprotection, but rather to make it to difficult for joe blow to get a free copy. The publishers don't seriously lose money until joe blow has an easy choice between getting a free copy, and paying full retail.

I think the fact that video games range in the Gb range and that few people have fast broadband connections is enough of a deterrent. In the same time it takes me to download a pirated game, I could have already gone down to the mall, picked up a copy, come back home, installed it and already have played half an hour.

Back when games could fit on floppy disks, it probably would have been a better alternative downloading over a 14.4, which could take an hour. But if I were to download something like Medieval War 2 with a 350k/s connection, it could take me days. Even if there was no DRM on a game, I'd rather get the game ASAP instead of waiting days.

Download times are not a deterrent if you really want the game, and the avereage joe who is downlaoding the game, the most copy protection you have to deal with is a CD key, which is either supplied via a key gen or more often a crack. You have way less DRM to deal with in a pirated copy than a legal copy (as far as I know).

The Spore E3 trailer was excellent

E3 2008 TRAILER @:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVH9Q8M8eaQ

I semi didn't care for the trailer, but nice touch with the movie-style preview. I'd have prefered they did a 300-style "THIS IS SPOREE!!!" rather than that vaguely-could be intelligent design-but it's really you (it's just a game) theme. Fingers-crossed for a dubbed, "300" machinima of Spore.

I think if the game is straight war path like the trailer implies, rather than highly variable like the batch of gameplay videos from a month agos, I'll play it for only a month. It's gonna need CIV4 variable play styles to keep me interested. The 500x versions of your favorite dinosaur, video game character, noveau art in the creature creator aren't interesting to me 1 month later. Same for the building & vehicle editors. If there isn't lots of functional game choices, it's gonna be dull window-dressing after a month of gaming.

Fingers-crossed.

Spore supports intelligent design! DON'T PLAY IT!

Great video demonstration from Gamestop.com
Spore E3 2008 Stage Show Demo

Highlights
  • Explains how you can (if you want to) limit what creatures appear in your game
  • Shows the little seen tribal stage
  • You get to see the clothing editor!
  • Talks about epic creatures

Looks amazing

That is a nice video. Looks like they haven't tried to last minute revamp the game into a warmongering-only thing. Cool that the social tactic involves a bit of a mini-game. Kind of funny the way the one speaker used the social tactic as a set-up for murder.

This game sounds like it will give me a chance to play Starcraft from the perspective of the Xel'Naga! I will, of course, create the Zerg, because they are bad ass, and the most resource efficient race.
Technically, that would make it a 'sim Zerus' game.

Just an idea I picked up from the Gamingsteve forums- if we all tag our creatures with 'Civfanatics', then we can easily find anything made by another Civfanatican. I'll do this for all of my creatures soon, and it would be great if others could do the same.

I can do the same...I am already using a Sporeum tag for their site.
