@Disgustipated - you're thinking of a two-parter I believe, "Chain of Command" where Picard is captured by Cardassians, otherwise good description. It is a great episode, no one can forget "there are FOUR lights!"

We need a run-off or something, of the current top three, Data, Garak, and Spock. Worf might have been in my top three actually but I mentioned that before and it's also irrevelant. Again with Spock - you get the movies plus his TNG appearances, and there's just all the other media and general cultural clout. If I had to purposefully base it off of just on-screen TV appearances, Garak is one amazing, interesting character, I'll give you guys that. And Data and others move up too vis-a-vis Spock. Or if that's not how we want to look at it either I'll just have to trudge up all the crazy awesome stuff that makes for the pro-Spock argument otherwise :p

I honestly don't find Data in the least bit interesting. He's not a bad character, or even a boring character - he's just a character. He's not a reason I'd watch a series, put it that way. Janeway, Garak, Picard, Spock -- they are totally among the reasons I watch their respective series'.

Picard is better then Kirk. Can Kirk quote Shakespeare to insult a Ferengi while pretending to court Majel Barret?
I don't think so.
Kirk did his fair share of Shakespeare-quoting. And William Shatner did a lot of Shakespeare in Canada before he went to the US to work.

"Chain of Command" was one of the very best TNG stories, for a lot of reasons. Actually, they should have made a longer story arc of that - at least half a season's worth.

Garak is a very interesting character. I'm currently reading a novel that the actor who portrayed him wrote, called A Stitch in Time. It's very well-written. And judging by the fanfic I've read, the Garak/Bashir friendship fascinates a lot of fans... :crazyeye:

But Worf... :gripe: Bad enough that TNG turned into the Klingon Soap Opera - but he became The Character That Ate Star Trek: Deep Space Nine! There were points in both shows where they might as well have renamed them Star Trek: The Adventures of Worf.

I'm very pleased to find somebody else who doesn't really find Data interesting. Sure, he has some funny stuff now and then... and some good episodes like the one where he created a daughter. But I could never really relate to him.

My TOS favorite: Spock
My TNG favorite: Tasha Yar
My DS9 favorite: O'Brien & Bashir
My VOY favorite: Seven of Nine & the Doctor

Oh, and I hated that abomination "Enterprise" to the point that I never did see all the episodes - and in fact, I never even saw the last season at all. Maybe that's why my favorite character on that show was Porthos, the dog... because he was cute. And he was also the only one who could act.

Tasha Yar? Are you joking?

Tasha, really?

No, I am not joking. Yes, really, Tasha.

The thing is, the writers never got a handle on her character until the actress had already decided to leave. There was so much potential for this character that was ignored.
There was some potential, but Worf brought in far more. The most interesting part of Star Trek is looking at all the different cultures. Giving Worf, and Klingon culture, a greater emphasis helped TNG.
For Tasha's character I couldn't see much more then a very strong-willed woman who had some issues in the past. That role fit Crusher better.

Wesley was annoying, but no need to call him a strong-willed woman. I'm kidding of course, I know you meant Beverly. I never cared for Beverly, and never got the impression she was strong.

If only the tar-monster that killed Tasha could have killed Wesley.....

Alternate-universe Picard sent Tasha back in time to convince Beverly to get an abortion, but the Romulans interfered

Spock or T'pol

Data was too tedious.

meh, it's not a particularly fine line between "showing boobs to get me watching" and "insulting my intelligence", yet they somehow managed to do the latter with seven of nine.

T'Pol was way worse though. At least they hadn't Seven rub "decontamination paste" on herself and similar obvious fanservice.

Decontamination paste was awesome!

As for Enterprise, it wasn't really that bad of a show. The worst part was Archer - whoever picked Bakula for the role made a big big mistake. T'Pol was a pretty decent character.

But who else would you have picked? Kevin Sorbo of Andromeda/Hercules? Charlie Sheen?

T'Pol was definitely less fanservice than 7 of 9, just some of the scripts.

I like Spock more than Data, but I find Data more interesting. Data was always learning something new about humanity, and he had a very unique perspective on things. To me it was always way more interesting to see what he learned or observed this episode, vs Spock's emotionless logic (which is not bad, just not as interesting).

Hugh the Borg was interesting in the same sort of way too, but only for 1 episode.

Both Data and Spock were learning new things about humanity and had different perspectives from everyone else. I preferred Spock both for the emotionless logic and the perspective on humanity as an outsider. And his confusion from the human condition. I just found Spock more entertaining somehow.

I liked the two-parter "The Best of Both Worlds", but hey, the whole plot line with "Chain of Command" was certainly interesting.

I'm surprised Q isn't a choice in the poll. He was certainly an interesting character whenever he decided to stop on by.

But who else would you have picked? Kevin Sorbo of Andromeda/Hercules? Charlie Sheen?

Preferably an unknown.. Somebody who can play a starship captain without appearing awkward half the time
